National Technology Day 2022: India joined the list of nuclear nations on May 11. Know history, significance & theme

0

National Technology Day is celebrated on May 11 each year to honour the contributions made by India’s scientific community including scientists, researchers and engineers.

The significance of the date lies in the series of technological advancements the country achieved on the day decades earlier.

National Technology Day 2022 theme

The Board also decides a theme for National Technology Day each year. The theme for 2022 is “Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future”. The theme was launched by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

National Technology Day 2022 history

As multiple technological advancements were accomplished on May 11, the Indian government declared it as National Technology Day which was officially signed by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The first National Technology Day was observed in 1999.

On May 11, 1998, India joined those group of countries that hold nuclear weapons as it successfully carried out nuclear tests at the army’s Pokhran test range in Rajasthan. In fact, it became the sixth country to join the ‘Nuclear Club’.

The tests were led by the late A P J Abdul Kalam, an aerospace scientist who went on to become India’s eleventh President. The tests were the second instance of nuclear testing in India after the first, code-named “Smiling Buddha”, in 1974.

On the same day in 1998, India tested its first indigenous aircraft Hansa-3 which took off its flight in Bengaluru. The aircraft was meant for surveillance, pilot training, and other reconnaissance purposes. The day also saw the successful test firing of the surface-to-air missile Trishul.

Eventually government announced this day as National Technology Day.

National Technology Day 2022 celebration

Since then, the Technology Development Board (TDB)—a statutory body within the Department of Science and Technology at the Centre—has been celebrating the day by honouring technological innovations that have added to the national growth.

Each year the Board organises an event where the President of India confers awards to scientists for their contributions. Various seminars and workshops are also held.

Shankaracharya Jayanti 2022: Know how this seer united the country from Kaladi down South to Kedarnath up North

Adi Shankaracharya (788-820 AD) trekked the difficult terrains of the Himalayan region like Badri-Kedar on foot from his birth place Kaldi (Kerala) around 1200 years back at a time when the means of transport were limited.

Shankaracharya performed this mahayatra with the aim of spreading spirituality.

At the age of six, Shankara had gained Vedic knowledge and he chose the path of sanyasi and passed each and every corner of the country till he attained samadhi at the young age of 32.

Adi Shankaracharya is considered to be the originator of Advaita.

He gave a teaching that the soul and the Supreme Soul are one. He established Jyotirpeeth in Badrikashram in the north, Dwarka-Sharda Peeth in the west, Shringeri Peeth in the south and Jagannathpuri Govardhan Peeth in the east.

Eminent historian Dr. Shiv Prasad Naithani writes that Shankaracharya reached Haridwar at the age of 12 while preaching of religious values from Kashi.

After worshiping on the banks of the Ganges here, he established the Shaligram Deity of Lord Vishnu in the sanctum sanctorum of the Bharat Temple in Rishikesh.

Shankaracharya crossed the Ganges at Vyaschatti, 35 km from Rishikesh and reached Brahmapur (present-day Bachelikhal). After reaching Devprayag from Brahmapur, he composed a eulogy (Ganga Stuti) at the Sangam and then proceeded towards Srikshetra Srinagar (Garhwal). He reached Nandprayag via Rudraprayag and Karnprayag on the right bank of Alaknanda river.

According to Dr. Naithani, Shankaracharya reached Joshimath from here and practised spiritual medition under the Kalpa tree. After the establishment of Jyotimath Peeth in Joshimath, he reached Badrinath. Here he not only renovated the Badrinath temple, but also removed the four-armed idol of Shri Vishnu from the Narad Kund and installed it in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Thereafter, he reached Kedarnath, the abode of Lord Shiva and took eternal samadhi. During the Kedarnath tragedy in June 2013, the Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya was flooded and hence an underground mausoleum has now been constructed at this place in the Dham.

Barabar Caves: The oldest surviving rock-cut caves speak stories of ancient art

0

Do you know the oldest surviving Indian rock-cut caves are the Barabar Caves situated in the Makhdumpur Block of Jehanabad district in the Indian state of Bihar?

A few of these caves, many of which have roots going back to the 3rd century BC during the rule of the Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE), carry Ashokan inscriptions on them.

Since the time of the emperor Ashoka and his grandson, Dasharatha rule, these caves bespeak stories of the policy of religious tolerance undertaken by the two emperors who were otherwise Buddhists.

Different Jain sects thrived under their rule. Ascetics from Ajivika sect which is known as a movement that remained a major contemporary of early Buddhism and Jainism, and was founded in the 5th century BCE by Makkhali Gosala, used these caves.

Many rock-cut Hindu and Buddhist sculptures are found in these caves.

It needs to be mentioned here that the Rock-cut structures present the most spectacular piece of ancient Indian art specimen as many of them are closely associated with various religions and religious activities.

Initially, remarkable Buddhist and Jain rock-cut structures were erected in areas such as Bihar in the east and Maharashtra in the west. Many caves were excavated by the Buddhist monks for the purpose of prayer and residence. The best example of this is Chaityas (called as prayer halls) and viharas (known as monasteries). Inside these rock-cut structures, windows and balconies and gates were carved as huge arch shaped openings.
