Sita was separated, Radha was single but into relationship; so why make fuss of single status?

0

“Girls are getting bold. They don’t want to adjust at their in-laws’ place; Financial independence is spoiling them; look at the rising number of divorces these days; these girls are opting for separation as they cant adjust. This is just not a part of our culture,” I could hear one of my relative’s discussion yesterday where she was cribbing how her daughter-in-law was happy at her parents’ place and not at her ‘home’!

Now, there was another twist to this story. Her daughter-in-law was never respected at her place. Curses and verbal abuse were a daily part of her life which tormented her to such an extent that she left for her parent’s place.

This news spread like wide fire and the entire neighbourhood is after her life. Some blame her character, and some blame her upbringing, some blame her parents while the remaining blame her selfish nature.

Expand the definition of ’Beti Bachao’ campaign, ensure their security from rapists, molesters & eve-teasers too!

0

Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao—The new campaign flagged across nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, have raised so many questions in my mind. The slogan asks for a girl to be saved right in the womb—Beti Bachao it says—but from whom— does she only need to be saved to be given birth-but once she is born, is there somebody who will care for her security?

I mean there are so many predators—from eve teasers, molesters, rapists—from dowry hungry in-laws—from those who have ogling eyes—who make people believe that there is no security of girls around. Also there are many evil-eyed people who ensure that their ego doesn’t get smashed with the success of working women.

Hence, if we bring in a campaign  for a girl to be saved right in the womb, we need to ensure a safe society for her in future too as their parents are all the more scared to promise the same to her—a healthy environment where she can grow amid security with peace, where she is treated equal to their male counterparts. Let her be given the same freedom, in whatever she does, in whatever she wears, no matter where she goes and what her profession is.

Once we look around, we see numerous stories emanating from different corners which reveal how females are still unsafe in their peripheries. See the number of females across the world who recently joined #metoo campaign, to share their trauma of being victims of sexual assault sometime in their life. They are all successful ladies who have faced challenges to come out strong and successful. But not all females are strong. Some give up in between by preferring to remain confined within four walls of their house while others keep battling till they come out strong.

Looking at gloomy environs around, the hapless parents in rural India are scared to bring up their girl child as they are scared listening to horror stories of Nirbhaya. They have also read and heard stories of how small girls, who are toddlers, are raped brutally.

So shouldn’t we expand the slogan-we need Beti Bachao, but we also need Beti Bachao campaign which ensures that our daughters are saved from rapists, molesters, from eve teasers and from any such person who takes girl as commodity or a puppet who will dance on their orders.

Let’s have a better Beti Bachao campaign which promises a 360 degree security to girls in India.

Padmavat dejected, but Padman accepted whole-heartedly by Rajasthan Govt.

0

After saying a big NO to Padmavat, Rajasthan has accorded a warm welcome to Padman, a film starring Akshay Kumar, which focusses on women’s menstrual hygiene.

So impressed is Rajasthan government with the movie that it has decided to distribute free sanitary napkins to females. Also the film has been declared as tax-free in Rajasthan.

Recently, announcing the Budget 2018 for the state, the chief minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje Scindia announced the distribution of free sanitary napkins for females under the age group of 15-45 years through schools, colleges, anganwadis, sub-health centres and Annapurna Bhandars.

The announcement definitely comes as an inspiration taken from the much-hyped movie. The endeavour of the state government aims at promoting menstrual hygiene, under which sanitary pads will be provided to girls and women in rural areas of Rajasthan.

Funds worth Rs 76 crore have been sanctioned for the scheme.

Raje also announced the launch of Menstrual Hygiene Scheme (MHS) in the state while delivering her Budget speech on February 13, 2017.  Recently she said, “Padman gives a message of maintaining health and hygiene among women.  It stands for a social cause and hence has been declared tax-free.”

According to the CM,  girls and women from 15 years to 45 years will be reaping the benefits of the scheme. She said an allocation of Rs 76 crore has been proposed for the scheme.

In fact, in 2017, Delhi Government also announced to distribute sanitary napkins to schoolgirls. Even Bhopal Railway station installed Sanitary Napkin Vending machine to ensure ease for girls and women to access pads.

With so much awareness spreading around, there seems to be a new awakening beginning in India where girls have more to think on hygiene.

Padmavat wins all battles, but we feel defeated coz we couldn’t see it!

0

Finally, Padmavat has emerged as a winner! Combating all challenges and bypassing all blockades, it has managed to hit the screens and is earning laurels all across.

As lot has been said and done on streets before the release of the film, my curiosity to watch the film is multiplying each day. With all my interest and heart poured into it, I am forced to satisfy my quest by simply watching the trailers of the film with Deepika dressed like a queen. Am appalled to watch the lavish sets and grand setup in the trailer but …

Now, am yearning to watch the film, which I just can’t, because am in Rajasthan.

Am enthused that finally, in a democratic country, freedom of expression has managed to breathe, (it’s ok if it manages to breathe on a ventilator). But then in a country which follows one nation, one law, why are we being deprived from watching the movie.

I want to use my Freedom of Expression to say that make an arrangement for those who wish to watch the film too!

I have seen Padmavat patrons there on streets. Have seen some goon terrorising masses by torching vehicles, malls and pelting stones on school buses too!

Have watched Karni Sena members pleading to stop the release the film; have seen them questioning why Taslima Nasreen wasn’t allowed to stay in India and why Salman Khursheed’s the Satanic Versus banned in India?

After listening, watching and thinking, am forced to write this blog to say ‘Let there be equal law for all’. Decisions on biased ground will take us no where and more Karni Senas will keep appearing.

We, as the nation, need to find out how to keep secularism alive in India…by respecting the views and opinions of not only one group and society but of complete nation…!

‘Come back Peter, Come back Paul’

0

It seems this is the right time to sing the kids’ rhyme,
‘Two little dickie birds sitting on a wall,
One named Peter, one named Paul.
Fly away Peter! Fly away Paul!
Come back Peter! Come back Paul’.

You must be surprised why I am recollecting the kids’ poem here.

But, if you are aware, an Indian, in fact, a young Indian, was shot dead recently in the US. Surprisingly, no one wants to take the responsibility of this hate crime. Who, according to you, should be blamed for his death? The racist who attacked him; the president of the US who endorsed racism; or else the people there who stand as a silent victim for choosing the ‘wrong man’ as their leader.

At this point of time, no one has the answer for this question.

But silently, all minds are thinking alike; should they continue sending their kids and kiln to the country of their dreams to cherish their dreams or not!

While they continue battling with their future aspirations, the figures released by The Southern Poverty Law Center data also continue to ring an alarming bell.
It says that within 10 days of Trump being elected president, 867 hate crimes have been reported in the country.

The racists got a shelterage when soon after the victory of Trump, words like ‘Make America White Again’ were pasted across the softball dugout wall in Wellsville, New York giving a clear indication how the new president gave a free hand to the racist policy.

Now, the only question appearing in each Indian’s mind is that with such tension mounting in the US, will Indians’ love story with the US continue or will it turn into a hate story?

Will Indians continue travelling to the US to realise their dreams or will they love staying back in India? Also, if Indians start returning to their motherland, will US be able to survive the jitters?

According to Pew reports released in 2014, Indian Americans are among the most highly educated racial or ethnic groups in the US.

70% of Indian Americans aged 25 and older had college degrees in 2010, by far the highest rate among the six Asian-American groups studied and 2.5 times the rate among the overall US. population.

Also, in 2011, 72,438 Indians received H1-B visas, 56% of all such visas granted that year. Indians in the US are also well off; The Median annual household income for Indian Americans in 2010 was $88,000, much higher than for all Asian Americans ($66,000) and all U.S. households ($49,800) — perhaps not surprising, given their high education levels. Only 9% of adult Indian Americans live in poverty, compared with 12% of Asian Americans overall and 13% of the U.S. population.
The Indians are also contributing to the US economy is different segments. While in 2010, by Pew analysis, only 28% of Indian American worked in science and engineering fields; in 2013, according to the 2013 American Community Survey, more than two-thirds (69.3%) of Indian Americans 16 and older were in management, business, science and arts occupations.

Now, when their survival seems threatened, don’t you think they should come back; let the world economy see what could be the result of being a racist nation at a time when the world has become a global village.

The silence of the US president, in this case, unleashes the kind of terror which has seeped in the premises of the ‘once haven for skilled labourers’. The future of skilled employees is secured, as other countries are inviting them, but the future of the US seems uncertain with its own countrymen standing against their President.

Will US economy tumble down with Trump effect or will it continue facing the cripples of uncertainty during ‘racist times’? Let time answer; so let’s wait and watch!

Are you losing out the spring charm to Air Conditioners?

Are you losing out the spring charm to Air Conditioners?

It’s the spring time; the season when nature showers all its beauty on earth! There are flowers blooming around; their enchanting sweet fragrance could be seen inviting you all and wooed by it, you feel like immersing yourself in this heavenly blessing.

But these days, the human soul, it seems, has gone awry. Instead of soaking the natural beauty, the modern-day humans are loving the cool comfort of their closed rooms.

Instead of taking delight in seeing the flowers blooming around, they are busy getting their air conditioners repaired and serviced.

Lost in their own world, they are losing the charm to feel the beauty of roses blooming in different colours around!

The so-called modern day materialistic men, it seems, have carved a wall, a periphery, while closing their direct contact with nature.

In their quest to find ultimate happiness, they are seen killing or submerging the sounds of birds chirping with the annoying ‘grrrrr’ sound of air conditioners right in the morning.

Within the closed door surroundings, these ‘luxury-loving souls’ are enjoying everything like surfing, reading, writing and what not; but, not the natural sun shine or the pleasant evenings.

Meanwhile, this class of modern-day men love to take frequent breaks and move out to jungles, resorts and hill stations to enjoy nature and come back rejuvenated.

The addiction to their mobiles, laptops and air conditioners continue haunting them and here too, they try exploring some kind of luxury around.

This six to seven days break, they agree, works miracle for them as they get stress-free and hence they re-plan to take the break again after staying for a few months in their man-made world.

Again they want to come back rejuvenated and once more they pack themselves within the same wall and get into the same concrete world planning for yet another break…!

However, the very idea of sitting outside in the balcony or on the terrace, enjoying nature for sometime remains outdated for him.

It seems that a temporary break remains more pleasing for them than exploring a permanent solution to rejuvenate their mind and soul, while cherishing the free time right in the lap of nature.
According to these modern-day men, living with luxuries is their ultimate aim and ‘this is what they are working hard for’!

Don’t you think this is the right time when such kind of people should be woken up to face the reality; the reality that if they stop caring about nature, nature too will stop caring about them.

And when nature shows its wrath, there wont be any escape, as there won’t be any healthy living left on earth to enjoy that very luxury which they are living and working for.

And my kid too falls into mobile trap and I feel helpless!

0

“Again mobile! Aren’t you sick of using it in morning, afternoon, evening and night? You have books, newspaper, notebooks; why cant you sit and study?”

I had to yell at my teenager son looking at his continuously growing fascination for his gadget.

“Mom, I am happy catching Pokemons in New Zealand, Kuala Lumpur, while sitting in the comfort of my house,” he replied immediately when my pitch got louder. Unaffected, he again went busy in his business of looking after Pokemons.

This scene has become quite regular at my place. He wakes up with his cell, gets ready for school and again sits with his mobile to play games. He becomes so engaged in his usual business that at times, he forgets about his school time too and had to be reminded of the same.

When he comes from school, the first thing he searches is for his mobile. Before eating lunch, after his lunch, before tuition and after tuitions, in evening snacks, before dinner and after dinner, mobile seems to have become his regular partner.

Even if you go for outings, at marriages, parties, picnics, this mobile sticks to him like a glue.

When I try to check him, he shows me all his classmates who are sitting online.

“You look like an outdated mom,” he says when I get after his life. “All kids are online, but no one’s mom behaves like you,” these words give me a shocker.

Am I getting too much harsh? Have mobiles become a part of kids’ life? Have other parents accepted this fact? Am I getting extra worried? There are thousands of questions  banging my head with no answers coming from anywhere around.

I discussed this with my friends and they expressed the same plight and pain of theirs. Their kids too are hooked to their mobiles. And they feel helpless too.

Snatching mobiles from them make them feel isolated as they cant exchange their chats. Getting louder makes them anguished; and, I, as a parent, can feel his increasing dependence on mobile, is making him addicted.

I can feel him getting restless and stressed. But am clueless how to get him de-addicted from this addiction. Any help from anywhere?

Dealing strictly with female employee amounts to sexual harassment: Govt body

Dealing strictly with female employee amounts to sexual harassment: Govt body

Believe it or not! An inquiry panel called by a government body recently proclaimed that dealing strictly with female employee amounts to sexual harassment.

In this episode, the female employee, habitual of reporting late, leaving office early and taking frequent leave without informing her reporting authority, was questioned by her immediate boss.

Getting vindictive, she accused him of harassing her sexually. An inquiry was immediately ordered in this case and what the judgement claimed is quite surprising.

The judgement proclaims that the officer cannot  ask her in writing for the reasons of her absence from office. Even in cases when the Supreme Court ruled that it is paramount for all employees to be in office to meet deadlines of the proposed work, he shouldn’t dare to raise his pitch for their dereliction of duties or else he might be in a soup.

Doesn’t this ruling come as a surprise when we all talk high of women empowerment?

Meanwhile, the report mentions that while the charges of sexual harassment couldn’t be proved, but as the officer had dealt with the female strictly, it does account to sexual harassment. Quite contradictory! Isn’t it.

Now what is all the more interesting is how the inquiry officers culminated the proceedings.

They asked the respective officer to meet the so-called ‘victim’ and apologise for his ‘misdeeds’ which include asking her reasons for her absence.

Moral of the story:

If you have a women worker right under you who comes and leaves office at her own wish and will, let her do the work as she wishes or else she can pounce on you for interrupting in the freedom she is enjoying under the garb of women empowerment.
