The Chhattisgarh Mediapersons Protection Bill 2023 was introduced by the chief minister, Bhupesh Baghel, for consideration in the Assembly.
Registration of journalists:
All media professionals, including journalists, media organizations, and mass media like news gatherers, Thus, freelancers, trainers, and interns, are required to register according to the bill. The goal is to categorize media professionals broadly and provide them with stronger protection.
The department responsible for handling complaints
To address media complaints, a committee will be established. Therefore, three media professionals with over ten years of experience, including at least one woman, and two senior government officials will make up the committee.
The chairperson will be a retired administrative or police officer not below the level of secretary. The committee shall be granted the same authority statewide as that granted to the civil court while a case is being heard under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.
False complaint laws
The registration would be canceled for the first fraudulent report, and for a second offense, the punishment might reach Rs 10,000. Information on the registered media representatives, complaints received, and actions taken will be made public on a website.
Authority for appeal
A body will be established to handle appeals against the committee’s decisions. Consequently, media professionals will have a way to challenge any measures that may be taken against them.
