The prestigious award ceremony, held at the Taj Mahal in New Delhi on November 18th, witnessed the convergence of literary luminaries, cultural enthusiasts, and the esteemed jury, as Murugan’s work earned accolades for its profound exploration of displacement, permanence, and the human condition.

“Fire Bird”: A Transcendental Exploration

“Fire Bird” stands as Murugan’s twelfth novel, drawing inspiration from his personal experiences of displacement and movement. The narrative navigates the delicate balance between the human longing for permanence and the inherent transience of life. The novel delves deep into Murugan’s characteristic themes, distilling his reflections on the personal, the struggles of life, and the indomitable human spirit.

Celebrating Linguistic Diversity in Literature

The translation of “Fire Bird” from Tamil to English, skillfully executed by Janani Kannan, marks a significant moment in the literary landscape. It is the fifth book in the JCB Prize for Literature’s six-year history to be translated from Indian languages to English, underscoring the richness of linguistic diversity in Indian storytelling. Murugan’s win reinforces the importance of making regional literature accessible to a broader audience through translation.

  2. “Current Show”: Set against the backdrop of a cinema theatre, this work delves into the recklessness of youth and the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures.
  3. “Poonachi: or the Story of a Black Goat”: Shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature in 2016, this novel employs an animal protagonist to metaphorically explore human tribulations.
  4. “Songs of a Coward”: A collection of haunting poems penned during Murugan’s challenging times, reflecting on the artist’s struggles and resilience.
  5. “Seasons of the Palm”: A poignant tale of friendship between an untouchable child and an upper-caste counterpart, exposing societal hierarchies.
  6. “Pyre”: Addressing the sensitive topic of honor killings, this novel explores the consequences of love defying societal norms.

JCB Prize for Literature: Elevating Indian Writing

The JCB Prize for Literature, established in 2018, has become a beacon for recognizing and celebrating contemporary Indian writing. By honoring “Fire Bird,” the prize continues to play a crucial role in fostering literary achievements in India.

Perumal Murugan’s literary oeuvre invites readers on a captivating exploration of the human experience. His works unravel the complexities of life, love, and societal norms, inviting readers to engage with the intricacies of the human condition through his masterful storytelling. As “Fire Bird” takes flight into the literary canon, Murugan’s impact on Indian literature remains indelible.

The Government of India has appointed Vinay M. Tonse as the Managing Director (MD) of the State Bank of India (SBI) until November 30, 2025. This appointment comes as a response to the vacancy left by Swaminathan Janakiraman’s transition to the role of Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank in June.

The recommendation for Tonse’s elevation to the MD position was put forth by the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) in September. Currently serving as the Deputy MD of the state-owned bank, Tonse’s promotion received the final nod from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

His versatile leadership skills have been instrumental in steering significant assignments and projects for the State Bank of India, covering areas such as corporate credit, treasury, retail, and international banking.

Let’s know FIFA World Cup 2023 Qualifiers

0

Priyanshi Pareek our sports enthusiast reported on FIFA World Cup 2023..

Unlike other sports qualifiers, football has a different strategy of qualifying.

In football only the host team is qualified for the world cup and all the other teams have to play the qualifying matches, no matter if the team is defending champions or at the number one spot in ranking.

The qualifiers of football are divided into five confederations and all the confederations have their different schedules for the qualifiers. The schedule is made by the confederation itself and is later on checked by FIFA.

The confederations:

UEFA – Union of European Football Associations – 55 members – founded in 1954 represents European nations in football.

AFC – Asian Football Confederation – 47 members – founded in 1954, represents Asian nations in football.

Australia is also part of AFC.

CAF – Confederation of African Football – 54 members + 2 associate – founded in 1957 – represents African nations in football.

CONCACAF – Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football – 41 members – founded in 1961 represents North American, Central American and Caribbean nations.

CONMEBOL – Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol – 10 members – founded in 1916 represents South American nations in football.

OFC – Oceania Football Confederation – 11 members + 2 associate – founded in 1966 represents Oceanian nations in football.

For each World Cup, FIFA decides the number of places in the finals allocated to each of the zones, based on the numbers and relative strengths of the confederations’ teams.

Qualification tournaments generally consist of a number of stages, made up of groups or knock-out ties.

In all group tournaments, three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. FIFA has set the order of the tie-breakers for teams that finish level on points:

  • Goal difference in all group matches.
  • Greater number of goals scored in all group matches.

Where teams are still not able to be separated, the following tie-breakers are used:

  • Greater number of points obtained in matches between the tied teams.
  • Goal difference in matches between the tied teams.
  • Greater number of goals scored in matches between the tied teams.
  • Goals scored away from home in matches between the tied teams, if the tie is only between two teams.

Where teams are still equal, then a play-off on neutral ground, with extra time and penalties if necessary will be played if FIFA deems such a play-off able to be fitted within the coordinated international match calendar.

All the matches are scheduled over the time period of 4 years.

Crackdown on Halal-Certified Products in Uttar Pradesh: Statewide Actions and Ongoing Investigations

0

In a swift response to the recently imposed ban on halal-certified products, the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration initiated a widespread crackdown across all 75 districts. The ban encompasses the production, storage, distribution, and sale of all halal-certified food products, excluding those intended for export. The move aims to address concerns about the existence of a “parallel system” causing confusion regarding the quality of food items.

Officials from the Food Safety and Drug Administration, stationed at their state headquarters in Lucknow, are closely monitoring the raids conducted at shopping malls, grocery stores, and other retail outlets. State Food Safety and Drug Administration Additional Commissioner Divyanshu Patel emphasized that the order prohibiting the sale of halal-certified products had been communicated to all field units, and reports from various districts were being compiled.

However, reports from several districts indicate that, as of now, no halal-certified products have been discovered in the ongoing raids. For instance, in Kanpur district, raids were conducted at 23 locations, but no halal-certified products were seized. The crackdown is expected to continue over the next few days, with officials awaiting comprehensive reports from all districts.

Simultaneously, the state police’s Special Task Force (STF) has initiated an investigation into an FIR related to the sale of halal-certified products in Lucknow. The case, initially lodged at Hazratganj police station, was transferred to the STF. The FIR implicated a company and three organizations for allegedly providing “illegal halal certificates” to products sold in the state. The FIR also named other manufacturing companies and individuals, accusing them of participating in an “anti-national conspiracy” and funding terror outfits.

The STF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Anant Deo stated that it is too early to provide details on the probe, emphasizing that all aspects of the case would be thoroughly investigated.

The organizations named in the FIR, including Chennai-based Halal India Private Limited, New Delhi-based Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust, and Mumbai-based Halal Council of India and Jamiat Ullema, face charges such as criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity, and cheating.

Responding to the allegations, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, one of the accused entities, deemed the claims baseless and vowed to take necessary legal measures to counter misinformation. The organization clarified that its certification process aligns with both export and domestic distribution requirements in India, as endorsed by the Ministry of Commerce.

As the crackdown unfolds and investigations progress, the situation surrounding halal-certified products in Uttar Pradesh remains fluid, with both authorities and accused entities awaiting further developments.
