This recognition is particularly significant as Indore claims the title for the seventh consecutive time, showcasing its sustained efforts in maintaining impeccable sanitation standards. The awards ceremony, held in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, also celebrated Maharashtra as the best-performing state, with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh securing second and third positions.

While the spotlight shines on the winners, the Swachh Survekshan Awards also shed light on areas in need of improvement. West Bengal cities Madhyamgram, Kalyani, and Haora found themselves at the bottom of the rankings, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to enhance cleanliness standards in these regions. The states with the lowest rankings were Rajasthan, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, indicating areas where focused interventions are necessary.

Recognizing Excellence in Various Categories:
The Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 not only celebrated the cleanest cities and states but also recognized smaller communities and specific achievements:

  1. Sasvad in Maharashtra: Awarded the cleanest city among those with less than one lakh population.
  2. Patan in Chhattisgarh and Lonavla in Maharashtra: Secured second and third positions in the same category.
  3. Ganga Towns: Varanasi emerged as the cleanest Ganga town, followed by Prayagraj, Bijnor, Haridwar, Kannauj, Patna, Rishikesh, Kanpur, Rajmahal, and Sahiganj. Among the 88 Ganga towns evaluated, Chhapra ranked last.

Mystical Depths: Unveiling Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave’s Divine Secrets

0

Priyanshi Pareek

You might have heard about many caves and read about their stories but today we are going to tell you about the cave which is said to be house and lord Shiva and thirty three koti diamonds, The Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar, located 14 km from Gangolihat in Uttarakhand, India, is a captivating limestone cave temple in the Pithoragarh district. Situated in the village of Bhuvaneswar, it is said to house Lord Shiva and thirty-three koti demigods. The cave, stretching 160 m with a 90 feet depth from the entrance, showcases stunning limestone formations, including intricate stalactite and stalagmite figures of various hues. Illuminated with electricity, this cave complex, formed by water flow, is not just a single cave but a series of interconnected chambers.

Legend of the Cave

The discovery of Patal Bhuvneshwar Cave is rooted in the saga of Raja Ritupurna, a sovereign of the Surya Dynasty reigning over Ayodhya in the Treta Yuga. The narrative unfolds with King Nal, defeated by Queen Damayanti, seeking refuge from Rituparna. Ritupurna escorted Nal to the Himalayan forests, instructing him to stay concealed. Enroute home, Ritupurna’s curiosity was piqued by a deer, leading him into the woods.

Under the tree, Ritupurna’s pursuit of the elusive deer transformed into a surreal encounter. In a dream, the deer implored him not to chase, awakening him to find a cave guarded by Sheshnag. Allowed inside, Ritupurna was carried through the cave’s wonders on Sheshnag’s hood, witnessing the divine spectacle of the 33-koti gods, including Lord Shiva. Following his visit, the cave lay closed for ages, with a prophecy in the Skanda Purana predicting its reopening in Kali Yuga. Adi Shankaracharya rediscovered the cave during this era, and since then, it has been a site of regular worship and offerings.

History

In the Treta Yuga, King Rituparna from the Sun dynasty is believed to have discovered Patal Bhuvaneshwar. The modern pilgrimage history commenced in the Kali Yuga when Adi Shankaracharya visited the cave in 1191 AD. Exploring the cave requires feeble lights and protective iron chains, unveiling stone formations resembling Sheshnag holding the realms of earth, heaven, and the underworld. Amidst the dimly lit ambiance, sacred fire sacrifices are performed accompanied by holy chants.

Impressively, these celestial heights are considered part of Shiva’s abode in Mount Kailash, with a belief that the cave is connected underground to Mount Kailash. According to legend, the Pandavas and Draupadi, heroes of the Mahabharata, meditated here before embarking on their final Himalayan journey. Situated at 1,350 m above sea level, this hidden pilgrimage is dedicated to Lord Shiva, hosting almost every deity. Worshipping at Patal Bhuvaneshwar is thought to be equivalent to worshipping the Chota Char Dham of Uttarakhand.

The Bhandari family, entrusted with religious rites at Patal Bhuvaneshwar since the era of Adi Shankaracharya, spans over 20 generations, preserving a wealth of legends, lores, anecdotes, and information about this sacred site. Revered as a treasure trove of wisdom, they have safeguarded the spiritual legacy of the cave.

According to belief, Patal Bhuvaneshwar is internally connected to the four abodes/seats (Char Dham). An intriguing legend holds that the original human head of Lord Ganesha, severed by Lord Shiva, resides here. This form of Ganesha, known as Vighnaharta, is said to create obstacles for the malevolent. The head, now unrecognisable, lies beneath a layer of limestone, adorned with an 8-petaled lotus-like formation (Brahma-Kamala) on top.

Inscriptions Outside the Temple

“This awesome cave is believed to be as old as the earth itself. It has been mentioned in detail in the 103 chapter of Manaskhand of “Skanda Purana”.

Inscriptions outside the temple at Patal Bhuvaneshwar stand as a testament to its enduring legacy. Carved narratives echo the ancient journey of King Rituparna in the Treta Yuga, guided by Sheshnaag through encounters with mysticaldemons. Symbolic entrances, like ‘Randwar’ and ‘Paapdwar,’ weave tales of war and virtue, closing after pivotal events such as Ravana’s downfall and the Mahabharata War, leaving only ‘Dharma War’ and ‘Moksha Dwar’ accessible.

Within the sacred cave unfold wonders – Goddess Kali’s tongue, Indra’s Airavat, and Lord Shiva’s hair. Rediscovered by the Pandavas in the Dvapara Yuga, consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya in the Kali Yuga, Patal Bhuvaneshwar’s inscriptions beckon visitors on a timeless journey, seamlessly blending sightseeing with devotion since 1191.

5000 years old Sandipani Ashram where Lord Krishna studied

0

Ujjain, a city steeped in religious significance, holds a treasure trove of history beyond its famed Mahakaleshwar Temple. One such gem is the Sandipani Ashram, a sacred shrine that served as the educational sanctum for Lord Krishna, Balram, and Sudama during the Mahabharata period.

Historical Roots:
Amidst the political and religious tapestry of ancient Ujjain, the Sandipani Ashram emerged as a prestigious center of learning. It was in this hallowed space that Lord Krishna, Balram, and Sudama received their regular education under the guidance of Guru Sandipani. Situated on the Mangalnath Road, the ashram stands as a testament to the rich cultural and educational heritage of Ujjain.

Ankpat – Where Krishna Wrote:
Adjacent to the ashram lies Ankpat, a place believed to have been used by Lord Krishna for washing his writings. The significance of this area adds a layer of mystique to the educational journey of the divine trio.

Engraved Numerals and Gomti Kund:
Guru Sandipani’s imprint is etched not only in teachings but also in stone. The ashram houses a stone with numerals from 1 to 100, believed to have been engraved by the revered guru himself. The Gomti Kund, mentioned in the Puranas, served as the water source for the ashram. An ancient Nandi image near the pond, dating back to the Shunga period, adds an archaeological charm to the surroundings.

Vallabh Sect’s Connection:
For followers of the Vallabh sect, Sandipani Ashram holds a special significance. It is considered the 73rd seat out of the 84 seats of Vallabhacharya, where discourses were given across India by the revered sage.

Transportation and Accessibility:
For those seeking to immerse themselves in the ancient aura of Sandipani Ashram, Ujjain offers convenient transportation options. The nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore (53 km), and the city is well-connected by train and road to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, and others.

Architectural Marvels:
The ashram complex, sprawling across vast stretches of land, houses multiple shrines. The primary shrine dedicated to Guru Sandipani takes center stage, with three idols of Lord Krishna, Balram, and Sudama alongside the revered guru. Another temple, Sarveshwar Mahadev, shelters a 6000-year-old Shivlinga in its natural form, worshipped by Guru Sandipani and his disciples.

Sacred Gomati Kund:
Gomati Kund, a stepped tank within the ashram, holds significance in the lore of Lord Krishna summoning holy water from various sacred centers. Devotees consider the water from this pond sacred, filling their bottles to carry the divine essence home.

Preserving Ancient Wisdom:
Sandipani Ashram, now more akin to a temple, stands as a guardian of ancient knowledge. It encapsulates the spirit of learning that once echoed through its halls, fostering a connection between the divine and the pursuit of wisdom.

Visiting Sandipani Ashram:
The ashram welcomes visitors from 9 AM to 7 PM, offering a serene environment to explore its historical and spiritual dimensions. Entry is free, allowing devotees and curious minds alike to witness the living history of Lord Shri Krishna’s educational journey.

In conclusion, Sandipani Ashram in Ujjain invites us to step back in time, retracing the footsteps of the divine trio as they embarked on a journey of knowledge and enlightenment in this sacred abode.

How Dal- Baati Churma was Made for the First time?

0

Priyanshi Pareek

Indian cuisine, encompassing regional gems and lesser-known specialties from all corners of the country, stands unparalleled. The unique spice blends, extensive preparation hours, uncommon ingredients, and an abundance of love and care contribute to making these dishes truly exceptional.

Rajasthani cuisine, in particular, has the power to evoke nostalgia for regal times and the splendour of royalty. A dish that epitomises this essence is the renowned Dal Baati Churma, a treat familiar and cherished across India. Comprising baked dough balls (baati), flavorful panchmel dal, and the sweet touch of churma, this trinity creates a faultless combination. Beyond its deliciousness, the dish carries a captivating history, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this wholesome and fulfilling meal.

The humble baati has its roots in the era of Bappa Rawal, who ruled the Mewar Kingdom in Rajasthan. During those times, baati served as a crucial wartime sustenance. Rajput soldiers, led by a strategic approach, would bury these dough balls or chunks beneath the top layer of sand before heading into battle. Upon their return, they unearthed baked versions, which, when dusted off, were adorned with desi ghee and accompanied by some form of buttermilk or curd—a tradition born out of both necessity and practicality.

The introduction of dal came much later when the Gupta Empire infused their love for panchmel dal into the culinary tapestry of Mewar. Comprising a blend of five lentils – moong dal, chana dal, toor dal, masoor dal, and urad dal – the panchmel dal, enriched with aromatic spices like cumin, cloves, and chilli, marked a transformative addition. This amalgamation with the baati-dahi/doodh combo gave rise to the iconic dal baati. The Guptas not only merged two essential elements but also replaced the subdued dairy flavour with a burst of spices and enhanced nutrition, creating one of India’s most beloved dishes.

The delectable churma, arguably the highlight of dal baati churma, has an intriguing origin – an accidental discovery by a cook from the Guhilot clan of the Mewars. In a serendipitous moment, sugarcane juice was inadvertently poured onto baatis, resulting in them becoming softer and more palatable. The Guhilot women, aiming to keep the baatis tender until the men’s return, began soaking the initially tough dough balls in a mixture of water and jaggery or sugarcane. Over time, this practice might have caused the bati to evolve into the delightful churma we know today. Locals then personalised it by adding cardamom or various spices and sweeteners, contributing to the rich and diverse flavours of this accidental culinary gem.

Thus unfolds the tale of dal baati churma – a culinary evolution where baati led the way, followed by the infusion of dal, and the accidental creation of the delightful churma. This historical sequence birthed one of India’s most iconic dishes, a wholesome and nutritious triple threat that weaves memories with each flavorful bite.

The ghee-soaked dough, the punchy dal, and the sweet crumb on top create a harmonious ensemble, leaving us with a dish that fulfils both the palate and the soul. What more could one ask for in a culinary masterpiece?

Ujjain: At The Crossroads Of Time Heritage

0

In the year 1884, Greenwich solidified its position as the prime meridian, becoming the international standard for 0° longitude and the epicenter for global timekeeping. However, long before Greenwich claimed this prestigious role, Ujjain, an ancient city in India, held the mantle as the central meridian for time within the Indian subcontinent. Even in contemporary Hindu almanacs, the time calculations are rooted in Ujjain time, persisting with a legacy that transcends centuries.

If you wish to delve into the secrets of Ujjain’s timekeeping techniques, the Vedshala, now known as the Government Jiwaji Observatory, stands as a living testament to this historical significance.

According to the Surya Siddhanta, an astronomical treatise from the 4th century, Ujjain is positioned precisely at the intersection of the zero meridian of longitude and the Tropic of Cancer. This unique geographical placement earned Ujjain the title of the “Greenwich of India,” signifying its pivotal role in timekeeping.

On a large globe outside the Vedshala, Ujjain’s location is pinpointed on the Tropic of Cancer, a latitude significant in marking the northernmost position where the sun is directly overhead. This imaginary line intersects the spire of the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, connecting it with the Somnath Temple in Gujarat. Additionally, the Tropic of Cancer is believed to pass through Mangalnath Temple in Ujjain, considered the birthplace of Mars in Hindu cosmogony and the closest point to Mars from Earth.

The roots of this observatory trace back to the early 18th century when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur, a polymath with expertise in mathematics, architecture, and astronomy, recognized the need for educating the masses on astronomical calculations. Witnessing a heated debate in the Mughal court on this subject, he was prompted to build an observatory, creating the first Vedshala in Ujjain before those in Jaipur, Delhi, Mathura, and Varanasi.

However, Ujjain’s engagement with time goes beyond the construction of this observatory. Long before its establishment, the city was a renowned center for astronomy and mathematics in ancient India. The Surya Siddhanta, offering one of the earliest descriptions of standard time in India, placed the prime meridian through Avanti (Ujjain) and Rohitaka (Rohtak) in Haryana.

The Jyotisha vedanga, an ancient Indian text on astronomy, emphasized the crucial role of timekeeping in predicting auspicious days or times for Vedic rituals. Ujjain was home to prominent astronomers like Varahamihira, Brahmagupta, and Bhaskaracharya, solidifying its status as a hub for celestial studies. It was also in Ujjain that King Vikramaditya established the Vikram Samvat or the Ujjain calendar around 58–56 B.C., marking a new era.

Visiting the Vedshala offers a glimpse into the intricacies of ancient timekeeping. The instruments, known as yantras, work on the principle of casting shadows, measuring time, altitude, eclipses, and studying the motions and orbits of planets.

The Shankhu Yantra calculates the length of the day, marking the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, and the Equator. The Samrat Yantra, or sundial, tells the time by casting shadows on parallel walls aligned with Earth’s axis tilt. The Digansha Yantra calculates the altitude and azimuth of celestial bodies, aiding in understanding planetary transits. The Nadi Valay Yantra determines whether a celestial body is in the northern or southern hemisphere based on its illumination by the sun.

Unique to Ujjain’s Vedshala, the Bhitti Yantra, or the transit instrument, measures the zenith distance of celestial bodies. Additionally, the Taramandel, a small planetarium, offers shows on planets, stars, constellations, and galaxies.

Built between 1725-30, the Ujjain observatory was renovated in 1923 by Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia of Gwalior. Today, the observatory still conducts astronomical studies, and an ephemeris detailing the daily speed and position of planets is published annually.

It is said that on June 21, the day of the summer solstice. “For one brief minute, your own shadow will forsake you,” encapsulating the mystical allure of Ujjain’s celestial history. The Ujjain observatory, a custodian of time, charges a modest entry fee and invites visitors to experience the marvels of ancient astronomical wisdom.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), christened the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri to Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, stands as an architectural triumph, connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. This six-lane sea bridge, with a staggering total length of 22 km, is not just a bridge; it’s a testament to advanced technology, meticulous planning, and a commitment to revolutionizing urban connectivity.

Engineering Marvel and Construction Details:

The Bridge Structure:
Constructed with cutting-edge Japanese technology, the MTHL comprises 16.5 km of sea bridge and 5.5 km of elevated road on land. Spanning from Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle near Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, the bridge plays a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Goa, and South India.

Materials Used:
The sheer magnitude of the project is awe-inspiring. The structural steel used in the Atal Setu alone amounts to approximately 1.2 lakh tonnes, equivalent to supporting the erection of four Howrah Bridges. The project utilizes a staggering 8,30,000 cubic meters of concrete, six times more than required for the iconic Statue of Unity, and 17 times the quantity used in the Eiffel Tower for reinforced steel.

Investment and Workforce:
The colossal endeavor demands a total investment of about Rs 20,000 crore. Over 15,000 skilled laborers and more than 1,500 engineers have devoted their expertise to bring this project to fruition.

Catalyst for Progress:
The MTHL’s impact extends beyond infrastructure. Termed a “game changer,” it is poised to accelerate growth in the ‘Third Mumbai.’ With its potential to bring financial, social, educational, and industrial progress to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it is set to redefine the region’s future. Employment opportunities are expected to burgeon, further contributing to the region’s transformation.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, with its marriage of cutting-edge technology, ecological awareness, and economic foresight, is not just a bridge over water; it’s a bridge towards a future where urban connectivity harmonizes with sustainable progress.
