TERI-UNOPS Initiative Empowered 27000 School Children in Uttar Pradesh on Climate Change, Health, and Hygiene Practices

0

A TERI-UNOPS (The Energy and Resources Institute – United Nations Office for Project Services) collaborative initiative on “Capacity Building Programme Targeting School Children on Climate Change, Health, and Hygiene across 11 Districts of Uttar Pradesh, India”, concluded with a National Conference held in New Delhi on Thursday. The national workshop involving various stakeholders from ministries, UN agencies, and partners was held to share lessons from the field, exchange best practices from the project, and discuss scaling-up efforts. The project, conceptualized around the combination of three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 3 (ensure healthy lives across all ages), SDG 6 (ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) and SDG 13 (limiting and adapting to climate change), aims to improve public health and raise community awareness. It incorporates climate change adaptations into the curriculum for school children in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh, where unique challenges related to water, sanitation, health, and climate change are prevalent. The project especially focuses on teenage girls, providing them with the tools to effectively manage and preserve water sources.

Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI, welcomed the guests, dignitaries and particularly congratulated the students emphasizing their role as ambassadors of climate change. “You all are the torch bearers of the initiative and shoulder the responsibility of taking forward this message to the community to tackle the changing climate and make the environment clean. This will go a long way in achieving our sustainability initiatives,” he said.

Elaborating on the on-ground initiatives, Mr Vinod Mishra, Country Manager, UNOPS India, expressed the organization’s delight in collaborating with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to organize vital workshops for 27000 children across 162 schools. “Students can be the champions, if trained, can be the Ambassadors”, expressed Mr Mishra giving a rationale of the very project which has been conceptualized on the basis of three SDGs. Taking the audience through the objectives of the project, he further added, “By focusing on critical areas such as access to clean water, the impact of climate change, and comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities, we are directly addressing Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6 and 13. This initiative not only aims to enhance public health but also empowers communities by incorporating climate change adaptations into the educational curriculum.

Highlighting the project’s achievements, Dr Neha, Senior Fellow, TERI, stated that the initiative raises awareness of climate change, water conservation, and menstrual health among school children. It also promotes sustainable water-saving practices in schools and aims to influence water management and conservation at family and community levels. This was followed by the student climate champions sharing their experiences and the screening of a project video.

Mr Bharat Lal, Secretary General, National Human Rights Commission, Mr Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator, H.E. Freddy Svane, Ambassador at the Royal Danish Embassy in India, and H.E. Dr Muawia Elbukhari, Ambassador of Sudan in India, delved further into the achievements of the project in their special addresses. Highlighting the importance of Jal Jeevan Mission and the factors necessary to contribute towards its success, Mr Bharat Lal, said, “There is need for UN agencies and organizatons like TERI who have an important role to play in the success of such projects through the children and youth. Achieving the mission of Vikshit Bharat will not be possible without children. A clean and green India can happen only by training and educating the children,” he emphasized.

Referring to the current situation of triple planetary crisis, Mr Shombi Sharp, said, “There is no better engine than youth for achieving sustainability.” Highlighting power of the large youth base in India, he further added, “India has more young minds, which means more young people bringing solutions to the problems than any country had before. So, this is about the youth and India is pushing the action climate action and climate justice for a sustainable future.

H.E. Freddy Svane emphasized the need to bring about a change at an individual level. “Take individual responsibility, for you are the ones who can harness the dividend of the young democracy. Do it through individual change,” was his message to the children present.

Students would be the leader of the community. We are surrounding them with the messages on climate change, health and sanitation means we are empowering them so that they tackle the issue individually,” underscored H.E. Dr Muawia Elbukhari.  The launch of the Project Manual was followed by a panel discussion on the role of students as change agents in disseminating knowledge and building community capacities on climate change, environment, health, and hygiene. The panel, moderated by Mr RR Rashmi, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, included Mr Yugal Kishore Joshi, Adviser, NITI Aayog, Government of India, as the chair, alongside representatives from embassies, UN agencies, state and central governments, CSOs, and international partners.  Further, the Student Climate Champions were felicitated by notable figures including the Panama First Secretary, H.E. Freddy Svane, and Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI.

The event concluded with a strong commitment from all stakeholders and closing remarks by Ms Elizaveta Zalkind, Coordination Specialist at the UNOPS Office of the Regional Director for Asia. She emphasized the importance of continuing to support and expand such initiatives to build a more sustainable and resilient future by creating climate-resilient communities.

How Yoga & Walnuts May Enhance Heart Health

Celebrating International Yoga Day 2024 by understanding the beneficial connection between yoga, walnuts, and heart

A healthy, nutritious and active lifestyle can go a long way in maintaining sound mental and physical health, and recent years have made us realize just how important it is to make health an utmost priority in our lives. So, this brings us to an important question: What does one do to stay fit and healthy in 2024? Integrative health coach Neha Ranglani has the answer: “A nutrition-rich diet, containing omega-3 ALA-rich walnuts, may help improve your cardiovascular health. Pair it up with yoga, which helps reduce stress, improve blood circulation, and control blood pressure levels, and you have a powerful combination for maintaining a healthy heart.

And we couldn’t agree more! California walnuts, paired with the ancient practice of yoga offer complementary effects that can help not only our heart health but also our overall wellbeing.

Scroll down to read how yoga and walnuts benefit your heart:

1. Reduced stress

Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, involves a combination of body poses, breathwork, and meditation. This trio is known to be beneficial for our mind and body. Meanwhile, walnuts may help improve mood. These wonder nuts may be associated with lower depression symptoms, greater interest in activities, higher energy levels, better concentration, and greater optimism.2

2. Promote weight management

Obesity is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, and hence, weight management is key to protecting one’s self. Yoga and walnuts both promote weight management. A handful of walnuts contains 2.5g plant-based omega-3 ALA, 4g protein, 2g fiber, and several other essential nutrients.

Walnuts may have the potential to influence appetite hormones, suppressing hunger and making you feel satiated for longer. And if you feel full for longer, you avoid unnecessary and untimely cravings.3

3. Promote healthy gut

Studies suggest that walnuts enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria to ensure a healthy gut.4 And a healthy gut may be linked to a variety of health benefits, including digestion, metabolism, and the immune system.5 Meanwhile, yoga, through specific poses like Pavanamuktasana and Paschimottanasana, can help deal with symptoms of digestive disorders and improve overall gut health.

4. Improve cholesterol levels

Did you know: that eating walnuts may help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL) in our body?6 And while walnuts do that, yoga also supports good cholesterol levels with its healthy lifestyle and weight management properties.

Now that you have read about a few of the many benefits of yoga and walnuts for heart health, how about starting your day with a handful of California walnuts and 10-15 minutes of yoga (to begin with)? Your body and mind will thank you for this holistic approach towards a healthier, happier you!

International Yoga Day 2024: Theme, Importance, and Events in Dal Lake

0

International Yoga Day, a celebration that traces its origins to India, derives its name from the Sanskrit word ‘yoga,’ meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to unite.’ This ancient practice enhances both physical and mental well-being, promoting a holistic approach to health. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of International Yoga Day in 2024, the event holds special significance, aiming to promote yoga as a movement that fosters resilience and well-being for individuals worldwide.

Theme for International Yoga Day 2024

The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 is “Yoga for Self and Society.” This theme emphasizes the transformative power of yoga, which helps restore balance in our busy lives. By practicing yoga, individuals can achieve a harmonious relationship between the mind and body, contributing to personal and societal well-being.

Historical Significance of International Yoga Day

The United Nations established the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015. The date was chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolizing light and health.

Importance of Yoga

Yoga is more than just physical exercise; it is a method for empowering oneself mentally and physically. In today’s fast-paced world, integrating yoga into daily routines is crucial for maintaining balance and overall health. The practice of yoga can lead to a more mindful, centered, and resilient lifestyle, making it an essential tool for coping with modern life’s challenges.

Celebrations and Events Worldwide

The 2024 International Yoga Day will be marked by various events and celebrations across the globe. A grand event organized by the Ministry of AYUSH will take place at Rajpath in New Delhi, with Prime Minister Modi in attendance. This occasion will see participants from around the world unite to perform yoga.

In a notable highlight, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will observe International Yoga Day in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on the banks of Dal Lake. The event, scheduled at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) along the picturesque Boulevard Road, is expected to attract between 3,000 and 4,000 participants. Among them will be students, police officers, sports celebrities, yoga enthusiasts, and party workers.

Security will be tight, with the authorities implementing a multi-layered security system and declaring Srinagar a “temporary red zone” to ensure safety during the event. Drones and quadcopters will be prohibited until the event concludes.

Union Minister of State for Ayush (Independent Charge) Prataprao Jadhav highlighted the Prime Minister’s efforts to encourage grassroots participation. PM Modi has written to each Gram Pradhan to promote the spread of yoga in rural areas. Last year, a remarkable 23.4 crore people worldwide participated in the International Yoga Day event, with 84 nations attending a single session, showcasing the growing global interest in yoga.

Summing Up

As we celebrate the 10th International Yoga Day, the focus remains on the transformative power of yoga for both individuals and society. The event in Dal Lake, Srinagar, promises to be a significant gathering, reflecting the global embrace of this ancient practice. Through yoga, we can achieve a balanced and harmonious life, fostering resilience and well-being in today’s fast-paced world.

Destroy heat waves before it destroys you.

0

Muskan student of Saksham Sanchar Foundation shared an informative and detailed article on heat waves.

Heat wave – A condition which occurs mostly in high pressure areas where heat is trapped and can’t be ventilated . Mainly it is declared when temperature crosses a particular limit.

As per IMD – In India when temperature of plains rises above 40 degree , in hilly areas above 30 degree and in coastal areas above 37 degree than a heat wave will be declared.

Year 2022 – called as Hottest Summer Ever , hottest summer in 122 years.

Year 2023 – summer 2023 was hottest in 2,000 years.

Year 2024 – Breaks all the records,  hottest January ever, hottest February ever, hottest March ever as well as hottest April ever.

  • In Philippines,  heat index had crossed 55 degree Celsius.
  • Terrible drought in South Africa, this type of drought was last seen in 1947 there.
  • In first week of May fire at many places in India.
Destroy heat waves before it destroys you.

Reasons –

1. Main reasons – Global warming and climate change.

2. Biggest reason – Earth and Sun relation.

3. 2nd biggest reason – El Nino effect and La Nino effect.

4.Urban heat island effect – mainly it states that places with more trees have relatively more comfartable temperature . Because the glasses , concrete and asphalt absorb heat.

Destroy heat waves before it destroys you.

El Nino effect – natural phenomenon which repeats after 5-7 years, but it is becoming more extreme due to climate change.

Mainly seen in Pacific ocean,  wind flows from east to west direction which are called trade winds, due to coriolis effect. Due to it the hot water from American flows towards Australia and Asia , due to which there is cold water on surface of America. Due to hot water formation of clouds increases and there is more rain in Australia and Asia also a cold climate in America.

Destroy heat waves before it destroys you.

It continues for 6 to 12 months. Weaker the trade winds upwelling of water doesn’t happen and there will be rain anywhere in Pacific ocean which leads to hot and dry season in Australia and South Asia.

So mainly it changes the weather pattern of world in Australia and Asia there is hot and dry season due to it and More rain in South America .

  • Like There was devasting flood in Brazil in first week of May .
Destroy heat waves before it destroys you.

La Nino effect- opposite to El Nino effect,  have longer effects and last one was in 2021 – 2023.

Scientists believe that it can start in July, August and due to it India will receive better monsoon than ever.

Temperature is not only much useful measure , because as humidity increases the level of heat increase and it is more hard for our body to do sweating ,due to which it remains hot and very hard to bear it.

Heat Index – tells us the temperature which is actually feels by us.

Destroy heat waves before it destroys you.

From it we can easily understand that how much humidity effects the climate and temperature. As example: if temperature is 29 degree Celsius and humidity is 70 % than it feels like 34 degree Celsius there is so much difference.

These are small acts but have big impacts.

Some basic impacts of heat waves on life :

1.Wildfires

2.Crop damage

3.Health issues

4.Impact on GDP

5.Reduced working days : affect livelihood of poors.

6.Electricity demand increases

7.Milk production decreased : reaserch at Cornell University estimates it .

8.Impact on environment.

9.Effects air quality.

Some solutions for this problem:

1.Plant more and more trees as possible,  so let’s join hands to plant more seeds.

2.Reduce using Ac : it produce too much heat.

3.Radiant cooling : a new technology, in it pipes are installed in walls and cold water flows through them and it  keeps house cold.

4. Use natural things as much as possible.

5.Paint your houses with white and light colours : dark colour absorb heat and light colours reflect heat so there will be difference in temperature to 2 to 3 degree Celsius.

6.Energy conservation.

7.Heat preparedness plans : should include early warning systems, communication strategies establishment of cooling centres etc.

8.Public awareness and education about it.

9.Promote public transport .

10.Use eco-friendly things as possible.

So there are so many other measures also to conserve our mother nature and us from these heat waves and drastic climate changes.

Save Earth today to live tomorrow.

Conclusion: The main thing is that these heat waves and scorching summers are too much harmful for us and have severe harmful effect for our nature. We must do something for it because often when we are at end of something we are at the beginning of something else so let’s make our Earth cool and green again.

World Music Day 2024

0

World Music Day is a yearly celebration held on June 21 to support music and its worldwide language. On this day, individuals are encouraged to play music in outdoor settings like neighborhoods and parks.

The primary aim of this event is to promote music, with both amateur and professional musicians encouraged to perform in public spaces under the slogan ‘Faites de la musique’.

Theme 2024

The theme for World Music Day 2024 is ‘The collaboration of diverse musical forms’.

History

In October 1981, at the request of Jack Lang, Maurice Fleuret became the Director of Music and Dance at the French Ministry of Culture. He focused on the transformation of musical practice, highlighting “music everywhere and concerts nowhere.” His vision was sparked by a 1982 study revealing that five million people in France, with one in two being young, played musical instruments. This led him to envision a way to bring music to the streets, culminating in the inaugural Fête de la Musique in Paris in 1982.

Since then, this festival has evolved into an international phenomenon. Celebrated in over 700 cities across 120 countries, including India, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the US, the UK, and Japan.

In the Anglosphere, this day is now recognized as Make Music Day and World Music Day.

Reach and Impact

In 2019, 120 countries took part in Fête de la Musique, with over 1,000 cities participating worldwide. By 2023, events were happening on most continents.

Italy’s Festa della Musica started in 1985 and became a national event in 1994.

The UK’s event originally began as National Music Day in 1992. Make Music Day UK transitioned into an independent organization in 2022.

Since 2013, Ukraine has hosted the event in Lviv, persisting even during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the United States, the Make Music Alliance was established in 2014 to help organize activities nationally. In 2023, 4,791 free concerts took place across 117 U.S. cities, including over 100 in Cincinnati, Madison, New York City, Philadelphia, and Salem.

In 2018, the Australian Music Association (AMA) introduced Make Music Day Australia, which has been co-hosted by AMA and the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) since 2022. In 2023, a global initiative named “Make Music, Make Friends” brought together 10 Australian schools with international schools to exchange music and greetings on Make Music Day. Make Music Days were first celebrated in Turkey and Ghana in 2022, followed by South Africa in 2023.

How to celebrate

Here are some ways we can celebrate World Music Day:

  • Listen to music
Enjoy the music you love or explore new tunes. Attend free concerts in parks, outdoor venues, or public spaces.
  • Play music
Share your musical talents in public areas, parks, or your local community. You can even start learning to play a new instrument by using online guides and tutorials.
  • Get involved
Volunteer with a music organization to teach, fundraise, or help with event cleanup.
  • Create a playlist
Encourage each group to curate a playlist on a streaming platform, allowing participants to select a track and explain why they chose it.
