Chittorgarh: Reawakening the Pride of Mewar’s Ancient Capital

Chittorgarh, once the capital of Mewar, holds deep historical significance. The last coronation at its Raj Teela (Royal Throne Hill) was that of Rana Vikramaditya, son of Maharana Sanga, in the 16th century. Vishvaraj Singh’s coronation will restore this illustrious tradition, breathing life into the legacy of Mewar’s ancient capital.

Later in the evening, Vishvaraj Singh will proceed to City Palace in Udaipur in a ceremonial rally. The festivities will include a visit to the Eklingnathji Temple for blessings, culminating in the Rang Dastoor ceremony at Samor Bagh Palace, where the Maharana’s white turban will be ceremonially replaced with a colored one, symbolizing the passing of leadership.

Mewar: A Tradition of Leadership Among the People

The rulers of Mewar have historically served as Diwans of Eklingnathji, the revered deity and titular king of Mewar. Unlike typical monarchies, Mewar’s Maharanas prioritized connecting with their people, working amidst them as protectors and caretakers.

Vishvaraj Singh: A Modern Leader Rooted in Tradition

Vishvaraj Singh, the newly appointed 77th Diwan, is not only a custodian of Mewar’s legacy but also a leader of the present. Born on May 18, 1969, coinciding with Maharana Pratap Jayanti, he earned a degree in economics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and currently serves as an MLA from Nathdwara. His wife, Maharani Mahima Kumari, represents Rajsamand as an MP.

Mahendra Singh Mewar: A Legacy of Four Decades

Vishvaraj Singh succeeds his father, Mahendra Singh Mewar, who held the Maharana title for nearly 40 years. Mahendra Singh was coronated on November 19, 1984, following the passing of Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar.

From Chittorgarh to Udaipur

After Rana Vikramaditya’s reign ended in 1536, Mewar’s capital shifted from Chittorgarh to Udaipur, established in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II. Since then, Udaipur has hosted all subsequent coronation ceremonies. Vishvaraj Singh’s enthronement marks a poignant return to the roots of Mewar’s regal heritage.

A New Chapter for Chittorgarh and Mewar

The coronation of Vishvaraj Singh Mewar on November 25 will not only revive a centuries-old tradition but also reaffirm the cultural and historical importance of Chittorgarh Fort. As the venue for this monumental event, the fort will once again stand as a testament to Mewar’s enduring legacy of valor, leadership, and devotion to its people.
