French football star Kylian Mbappé added another chapter to his remarkable World Cup career by becoming the youngest player to make 20 FIFA World Cup appearances during France’s quarterfinal victory over Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He also became the fastest player to score 20 World Cup goals, further cementing his status among the tournament’s all-time greats.
France Advance to the Semifinals
Mbappé played a decisive role in France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco at Boston Stadium. Although he missed a first-half penalty, the 27-year-old responded by scoring the opening goal in the 60th minute before setting up Ousmane Dembélé for France’s second goal, sealing the team’s place in the semifinals.
Youngest to Reach 20 World Cup Appearances
With his 20th World Cup match, Mbappé became the youngest footballer to reach the milestone. He also equalled former France captain Hugo Lloris for the most FIFA World Cup appearances by a French player, moving ahead of Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, and Raphaël Varane.
The overall record for the most FIFA World Cup appearances remains with Lionel Messi, who has played 30 matches.
Fastest Player to 20 World Cup Goals
Mbappé’s strike against Morocco was his eighth goal of the 2026 tournament and his 20th FIFA World Cup goal overall, achieved across the 2018, 2022, and 2026 editions.
The milestone makes him the fastest player in World Cup history to reach 20 goals. He now trails only Lionel Messi on the all-time World Cup scoring chart, with Messi leading on 21 goals.
Closing in on Another Record
France’s victory also increased Mbappé’s tally of World Cup wins to 17, placing him second on the all-time list behind Lionel Messi, who holds the record with 20 World Cup victories.
Already France’s all-time leading scorer, Mbappé continues to rewrite the record books with his consistent performances across three FIFA World Cups, strengthening his legacy as one of the greatest players in the tournament’s history.
