India’s maritime combat capabilities will receive a major boost as the Indian Navy commissions the indigenously built stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri today. Built with over 75% indigenous technology, the warship is equipped with advanced missile systems, anti-submarine warfare capabilities, high-speed propulsion, and stealth features that make it difficult to detect on radar.

INS Mahendragiri to Be Commissioned into Indian Navy Today; Know More on Its Frigate Armed with Advanced Missiles and Anti-Submarine Systems...

Mahendragiri is the sixth stealth frigate of the Project-17A ‘Nilgiri’ class. It has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by the Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). Mahendragiri will further strengthen India’s maritime security in the Indian Ocean. It will also play a role in ensuring a secure and stable Indo-Pacific region. First, take a look at photos of INS Mahendragiri… Over 75% indigenous technology: More than 75% of the equipment and technology used in the warship is indigenous. Numerous MSME companies from across the country contributed to its construction, thereby boosting defence production and creating employment opportunities. Equipped with modern weaponry:

Mahendragiri is fitted with modern surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems, advanced electronic warfare systems, anti-submarine warfare systems, and an integrated combat management system. Stealth technology and high-speed capability: Mahendragiri features advanced stealth technology, making it difficult to detect on radar. It is powered by a Combined Diesel and Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, enabling high-speed operations over long distances.

The Indian Navy is set to induct INS Mahendragiri, an indigenously built stealth guided-missile frigate, into its fleet on Friday at a ceremonial event in Visakhapatnam. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over the commissioning ceremony.

INS Mahendragiri is the sixth stealth frigate under the Navy’s Project-17A Nilgiri-class programme. The warship has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

The induction of INS Mahendragiri is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region while strengthening the country’s role in ensuring a secure and stable Indo-Pacific.

Built with Over 75% Indigenous Technology

More than 75% of the ship’s equipment and systems have been sourced domestically, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The project also saw the participation of numerous MSMEs from across the country, contributing to indigenous defence production and employment generation.

Equipped with Advanced Combat Systems

The stealth frigate is armed with a range of modern weapons and sensors, including:

  • Surface-to-surface missile systems
  • Surface-to-air missile systems
  • Advanced electronic warfare suites
  • Anti-submarine warfare systems
  • Integrated combat management system

These capabilities enable the vessel to undertake multi-dimensional combat operations across air, surface, and underwater domains.

Stealth Design and High-Speed Operations

INS Mahendragiri incorporates advanced stealth features that significantly reduce its radar signature, making it difficult to detect during operations.

The warship is powered by a Combined Diesel and Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, allowing it to achieve high speeds while maintaining long-range operational capability, making it suitable for extended maritime deployments and rapid response missions
