Significance of Dhanteras
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and god of Ayurveda, emerged from the Kshir Sagar (cosmic ocean) during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) carrying the Amrit Kalash (pot of nectar). Goddess Lakshmi also appeared during this divine event, which is why Dhanteras holds immense spiritual importance.
The festival is believed to remove poverty and negative energies from homes. Lighting a diya outside the main entrance in the evening is considered auspicious to invite Goddess Lakshmi into the household.
Puja Rituals and Traditions
Devotees begin the day by taking a holy bath and cleaning their homes. During the evening puja, idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari are placed together. Items purchased during the Shubh Muhurat are offered during the worship. Diyas are lit throughout the house to dispel darkness and bring divine blessings.
