Homi Jahangir Bhabha, considered as the father of India’s nuclear programme, was born on October 30 1909 in a wealthy Parsi family in Mumbai and has once claimed of developing a nuclear bomb in just 18 months.

He was the man who was considered as an eminent scientist of the world. Many countries, even the United States of America, was scared of this scientist who had a thorough knowledge in nuclear science.

In those times, when very few people were studying about nuclear energy, this man visualised the dream of converting nuclear energy to produce electricity. He was also called as Architect of Indian Atomic Energy Programme.

At the age of 18, Bhabha studied mechanical engineering at Cambridge University. Later he developed his interest for physics.

He came to India in 1939 during holidays, but could not return due to the World War-II.

Then in 1940, at the behest of Dr. CV Raman, he joined the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.

Five reasons why the content of India’s oldest literature—Rig Veda—should be known to all!

0

“We are taught Shakespeare in school but not Kalidas and that’s a shame.”

When renowned author and politician Shashi Tharoor uttered these words during Jaipur Literature Festival on British Raj in India, I was more keen to know more about the ancient Indian literature.

Without any delay, I Googled the ‘ancient Indian literature’ and found Google popping up ‘vedas’. A little in-depth search brought to my notice that the most ancient literature of India – the Rig Veda, describes about the power of yoga, meditation, mantra, charity, cosmology as well as Ayurveda. Rig Veda beautifully presents the significance of nature too. The appealing presentation of Ushas, the Goddess of Dawn, is quite enticing. With its 1028 hymns scripted in Vedic Sanskrit, Rig Veda describes everything which we are trying to explore in today’s world! Here we discuss five reasons why we must know more about the constituents of this most ancient Indian literature:

Rig Veda had the most original thoughts on origin of universe: Discussing nature as well as the origin of universe, Rig Veda consisted of the most original thoughts. The first eight books, constituted thousands of years back, discussed cosmology besides praising deities. Similarly, Books 1 and 10, that were added at last discussed questions about how universe was originated. They also discussed the virtue of charity and donation in society.

2. It introduced the world to the Science of Sound: The Rig Veda is the book of Mantra. It contains the oldest form of all the Sanskrit mantras. The book is believed to have been built around a science of sound comprehending the meaning and power of each letter.

3. Its content has strong relevance to today’s world: Most aspects of Vedic science like the practice of yoga, meditation, mantra and Ayurveda are found in the Rig Veda. Despite being the oldest literature, it still finds its existence in today’s world. It discusses about significance of nature and science too!

4. It is one among the world’s oldest texts: Being one of the oldest texts being written in any Indo-Iranian language, it formed one of the world’s oldest texts. Surprisingly, its contents were preserved over centuries by oral tradition alone.  According to research, they were not put in writing before the start of the Early Middle Ages.

5. Its origin remains unknown: Enjoying the credit of being the oldest book in Sanskrit or any Indo-European language, its date still remains debatable. While the renowned scholars who have studied the astronomical references in the hymns date the Rig Veda before 4000 BC, there are a few modern western scholars who relate them to the period existing around 1500 BC. Meanwhile, the most recent archeological finds in India (like Dwaraka) seems to give it a much earlier date.

Now, Isn’t it interesting to know that what remains unexplored today was being discussed thousands of years back by our forefathers? Don’t you think  that our ignorance have made the most valuable literature as the lost literature? How many of us who have read William Wordsworth or Shakespeare have read Kalidasa or Tagore in modern world too? Shouldn’t we start catching up with our most ancient literature too frequently?

Will catch up with more interesting facts on ancient literature in next blog.

5 wildlife experts honoured as they made history with first-of-its-kind work on Great Indian Bustard

0

By Harsh Vardhan

Five wildlife experts from the premier scientific arm of Government of India, Wildlife Institute of India (WII)  have received the Sawai Awards 2020 on  October 22, 2020 at the City Palace, Jaipur. It is to recognise their pioneering scientific work on ex-situ breeding of Great Indian Bustard and Lesser Florican in India in recent years.

The recipients are: Dr. YV Jhala, Dean and project investigator, Dr. Sutirtha Dutta, scientist, co-investigator and project coordinator, Dr. Tushna Karkaria, lead veterinarian, Mr. Bipin C. M., lead ecologist, and Dr. Shravan Singh Rathore, veterinarian and center manager.

Owing to the virus reasons, the ceremony had to be through a video presentation which featured  Jaipur Rajmata, Padmini Devi and her daughter, Princess Diya Kumari, speaking about the role of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum Trust administered by them.  23 persons of eminence received awards: a metal urn, a shawl, a citation-certificate and some cash. This award is constituted after Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh I, who advocated environmental conservation.

Indian bustards facing the threat of extinction

Indian bustards are on the brink of extinction. Their dry open habitats are long marginalised as ‘unproductive wastelands’ and diverted to intensive agriculture, tree plantations, and renewable energy production. Because of these changes and excessive hunting in the past, bustards disappeared from 90% of their range with steep declines in the last 30 years. Conserving them required synergy between specialized research, experiments, and management guided by these learnings. That never happened as grasslands stayed in the shadow of forest centric conservation, and decision makers avoided the risk of specialized research and experiments. For many years, conservation circles kept highlighting the need for recovery actions including captive breeding, and formulated a road map to this end (2013).

How the things changed in 2019

The wind changed around early 2019, when permissions came through, to commence conservation breeding and telemetry in Rajasthan. The Wildlife Institute of India, a premier conservation research organization based at Dehradun, initiated actions under the Bustard Recovery Program with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Rajasthan Government and the International Fund for Houbara Conservation. A team of specially trained technicians was stationed at Jaisalmer that implemented a flurry of challenging tasks since March 2019.

Newer initiatives mark the positive beginnings

Birds were tagged to understand their movement ecology, threats and plan habitat restoration. A pilot conservation breeding facility was built at Sam. Wild eggs were tracked and collected, artificially hatched and chicks were carefully raised to form a founder population of 16 Great Indian Bustards so far. Since July 2020, another pilot facility was built at Bijainagar where two Lesser Florican eggs were collected, hatched and are being reared.

Why it is like a world record

India could attain this feat after prolonged debate on the issue for almost forty years. It looks like a world record, never attempted earlier on the species. Congratulations WII and all others associated with it from this Media Portal specializing in conservation concentric appeals.

Wetland appeal: Anand Arya approaches PM via online petition, cites gross anomalies

0

The name of Anand Arya, a birder and environmentalist, stands synonymous with the most-talked issue concerned with India’s wetland. The man, since years, has been pitching quite strongly, raising a demand to protect 2,01,503 Wetlands (covering 1,47,05,015 Ha or 4.3% of geographical area of India).

By Harsh Vardhan

Pushing for the conservation of India’s water bodies

Since long, he has been pursuing all —Bureaucracy, Polity, Government, National Green Tribunal, and Supreme Court of India — the most convincing plea to conserve India’s water bodies so that the water crises faced by people is over.

We succeeded in obtaining Directions from the Supreme Court, in February 2017, to protect 2,01,503 Wetlands (covering 1,47,05,015 Ha or 4.3% of geographical area of India) and to complete formalities within 4 Weeks” this towering giant with floating gray hair, sums up his crusade in brief.

What next? He discloses: The Government of India revised Wetland Rules in 2017 and then laid a schedule of 20 months to complete (and comply with the Supreme Court directions). The Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC) committed  in June 2020 that NOT A SINGLE WETLAND HAS BEEN NOTIFIED in India (except 10 Ramsar Sites in 2020).

When the govt is silent, here comes next step

What next? My final, “I am now approaching India’s Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi for the Final Time via an online Petition at the link: http://chng.it/wZCgL9nV2m. Like to sign and let me know (Anand Arya, Birds and Birders of the World, Sector 353, Sector 15A, Noida, India, and at + 91 9818261909).”

The petition is to help all citizens of India and Prime Minister’s attention is being drawn as all others in the Government have maintained a Sphinx-like silence over this issue of extraordinary significance.

Seeking PM’s Directions to Save Wetlands

It is to seek PM’s “Directions to Save Wetlands.” It states: “ There are 7,57,060 Wetland in India, and measuring 1,52,60572 Ha or 4.5% of India’s geographical area.  Wetlands Provide 125 billion cubic meter (BCM) of water to India’s needs. Wetlands are the most important element of Hydrological Cycle. They perform numerous consequential functions to maintain just life for people and save the Government from excessive pressure. One Ha of Wetland adds to underground aquifers between 30-50 lakh liters of water every year. They receive ZERO PROTECTION today various acts at place.”

Arya’s prayer to PM
“NAL SE JAL (PIPED WATER) AND ATAL BHUJAL YOJANA as floated by India, can  only succeed if ground water recharge is doubled through protection and proper management of Wetlands. So I humbly request your direct intervention and use of Sections 5 & 15 of EPA 1986 to ensure compliance by Designated Officials to do the required work.”

It is how Anand Arya has summed up his Prayer to the PM. He is the lone person who has been trying to conserve the  Dhanauri  Wetlands and done a film on it (https://youtu.be/D4nNsgd0ouE).

Bara Bungalow in Jaipur– Bask under open sky & live a ‘rich’ life amid greens!

0

Bara Bungalow Amer located at around 240 kilometer from Delhi, 27 kilometers from Jaipur Airport and 22 kilometers from Jaipur railway station teaches the art of living a rich life amid the lush green locales!

Located in a serene natural rural surrounding in Natata village of Amer, it is quite close to Jaipur’s places of interest.

As we have been living our lives rushing and running on day-to-day, month-to-month and year-to-year basis, we feel like going slow at some stage of our life and want to spend our life amid lush green nature where the word ‘pollution’ remains a foreign entity and the sounds of chirping of birds is an integral part of the life!

The harsh honking is no where around and serene wind keeps blessing our senses each second!

Wanna know where can we find one such soothing place to relax your senses? It’s in Bara Bungalow, situated in Amer in Jaipur which is situated far off from city lights and gives a rustic rural feel located amid green surroundings.

Bara Bungalow in Jaipur-- Bask under open sky & live a ‘rich’ life amid greens!

The pristine building reflects the old-world charm and has been owned by Rajasthan’s former chief secretary Salauddin Ahmed.

“I bought this land long time back and had planned to live a soothing life with ‘sukun ke pal’.

His study area is situated in an open ground which is covered by dense trees around where squirrels can be seen playing hide and seek, sparrows keep juggling and other birds are also eager to show their presence to any new guest.

Speaking on tall trees spread around, the former CS says, “It’s drip irrigation which helped them to grow higher in last few years.”

The temperature remains a little lower here as compared to the city in summers while winters give a wonderful time!

Basking under sun is an ultimate experience while partying under starry nights during a get together is yet another distinguished feel. Also bonfire in winters creates yet another marvel memories, he says.

Not all can afford this luxury. People these days love the packed lives in flats, but the ultimate experience of spending life in an open space to be amid nature is quite wonderful!

May be, post the COVID-19 era, people shall prefer living in an open space, says Ahmed.
