Ajanta Caves:History, Painting, Facts, Built by Architecture and More

Ajanta Caves can be seen as a cluster of 30 rock-cut caves representing the Buddhist architecture, sculptures and cave paintings which were built by monks using simple tools like hammer and chisel to bring out the stories depicted here.

History: These caves are believed to be existent since the pre-Christian era, with the oldest being Cave 10 which is dated back to second century BC. Ajanta caves were discovered by an Army officer posted in the Madras Regiment of British Army in the year 1819.

Paintings: The painting style of Ajanta caves showcase a strong influence of artistic styles from Tibet and Sri Lanka where the binding material used for most of the paintings is glue. 

Facts: Ajanta caves are seen as a cluster of 30 rock-cut caves showing a true representation of earlier Buddhist architecture, sculptures and cave paintings.

World Heritage Site: Since 1983, Ajanta caves have been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of India. It is also a protected monument which is taken care of by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon : The father of modern legal education in India

Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon (NR Madhava Menon) is known as the father of modern legal education in India who introduced five years of integrated law degree course and established national law schools in country

Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon was awarded Padma Shri in 2003 for his outstanding contribution for modern legal education system.

He died in Thiruvanathapuram when he was 84. 

Menon was enrolled as a lawyer when he was 21. He joined the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) and completed his LLM and PhD from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Menon worked as a professor at AMU campus’ law centre.

Menon introduced five years of integrated law degree course in India and established national law schools. 

He served as the founding vice chancellor for 12 years in the National Law School India University, Bangalore and Kolkata.

The Supreme Court appointed him to set up the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal where he served two terms as a member of the Law Commission of India.

India houses the world’s oldest illusion, situated in the Airavatesvara Temple in Thanjavur district of India which has captured the attention of both art historians and vision scientists

The Airavatesvara Temple in India houses a bas-relief—which was sculpted around 850 years ago.

All well preserved, it has captured the attention of both art historians and vision scientists. 

This piece of art is remarkable as neither the subject has been depicted in it, nor its delicate details, however it contains one of the oldest examples of illusions in art. 

The creature it represents is either seen as an elephant or a bull, taking cues of ancient example of ambiguous brain teasers which include the duck/rabbit, or the old/young lady illusions. 

The city of Mahabalipuram is possibly home to even older ambiguous illusion, which was sculpted on a pillar some 1300 years ago. 

The depiction, at first site, appears to be of cow and her calf, but by blocking the center of the carving, it portray an adult and a baby elephant.

This 105-year-old woman, named Ratanbai, who is a resident of Rajasthan from Ravatbhata, has left many people stunned with her sharp memory which remembers 700 shlokas of Bhagwad Gita even after passing the 100 years of her life.

Despite being illiterate, she remembers 700 shlokas of the Bhagavad Gita since last 80 years. She is Ratanbai who learnt the Geeta shlokas in a temple.

In academic terms, she is illiterate, however, on spiritual terms, she is highly literate.

She may not have gone to school or received a passing certificate/degree from school, but she is educated in temple in a similar manner which once used to be an education system during pre-colonial era in Bharat. Can we draw lessons from her and revive our education system?

Let temples be the base of our education system which once were during ancient and medieval era times.

As per the Hindu calender, the Pratipada tithi, in the Krishna Paksha of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, is observed as Narada Jayanti. 

The festival is observed the next day of the Buddha Purnima. 

This year, Narad Jayanti is being celebrated on May 27, 2021. 

The Pratipada tithi begins at 04:43 PM on May 26,  2021 and will end at 01:02 PM on May 27, 2021.

Narada Jayanti: Significance

As per the Hindu scriptures and mythological stories, sage Narada wasn’t restricted to one world and was the one who travelled in all three Lokas namely, Swarg (heaven), Dharti (earth) and Narak (hell). 

He had the power to appear at any place and deliver the Almighty’s messages and used to play His Veena and sing songs while delivering the messages.

Believed to be the son of Lord Brahma, Narada Muni was considered the ardent worshipper of Lord Vishnu and was seen as the pioneer of the communication. Though there are a few temples of Narada Muni, the most important one is Chigateri near Devnagere in Karnataka.

Chaturbhujnath Nala Rock Shelters in MP: Bask under the natural centuries-old ancient art

The Chaturbhuj nala rock shelters, situated near Mandsaur in MP, is a pristine site which stretches over the 5 km long trail with thousands of ancient rock paintings on the wall.  

Situated 30 kms from Bhanpura, a small township in Mandsaur, are these rock shelters called Chaturbhujnath Nala or Chaturbhuj Nala rock shelters which are situated within the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, encompassing spectacular views of sprawling landscape and splendid water bodies.

The site was discovered in 1977 by a local school teacher Ramesh Kumar Pancholi and his friends and was named after a nearby Chaturbhujnath temple.

 Since then, many international tourists and travellers have been lured to these rock canvases who come to spend fun weekends.

 Belonging to the pre-pastoral (over 6,000-12,000 years old) to the early medieval age (10th century), the site is often compared to the UNESCO approved Bhimbetka rock shelter situated near  Bhopal.

Other ancient sites near Chaturbhujnath nala rock shelters

Just 5 kms from Bhanpura is a hill known as “Dar Ki Chattan” which features almost 560 man-made cupules marked on the walls. Supposed to be the earliest efforts of artistic expression by the human, these cup marks are anywhere between 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 years old, say archaeologists and scholars, Other rock-art sites in the region that existed in the ancient times and used by ancient humans are Chiber Nala, Sita Khardi and Modi. But, the most prominent and well protected till date is the site of Chaturbhujnala.

Sunil Dutta, a Bollywood star, is known as a real and reel life hero who wore different hats on screen, was cordial with his friends and colleagues and was a doting father and husband too. Born on June 6, 1929, Sanjay Dutt passed away on May 25, 2005 of a heart attack 11 days before his 75th birthday. 

Besides being a renowned Bollywood star, Dutt has been a successful politician too.

He made a successful foray into politics by joining the Congress party and went on to becoming a Member of Parliament. 

As a doting father for his actor son Sanjay Dutt , he stood by him through thick and thin and did his best in pulling him out of drug addiction.

During the lunar eclipse, the Moon will be located on the Earth’s opposite side on May 26 and will be fully illuminated at 6:13 am during the Central Daylight Time (CDT), which will be around 4 pm at the Indian Standard Time (IST). Observers all over the world will be able to view the supermoon throughout the night if the sky is clear.

However, yet again, there is no scientific evidence to back this statement. Further, there is no research behind the myth linking eclipse with insomnia.
