Shakuntala Express: Only train to run under British company even in Independent India

Maharashtra Vidarbha region’s Shakuntala Express was British India ‘s privately owned Indian train, established by Killick ,Nixon and Company in the year 1903 which till 2016 was managed by British company. Vidhi Mathur reports…

Before independence era, under the Central Railway Province, the train’s primarily role was transportation of cotton to England. This narrow gauge passenger train with approximately 2.6 ft railway track line was collateral to the British company .

However in the year 2016, Indian railway proposed to take over it and converted it into broad gauge.

The train visit covers 190 km stretched railway line covering stations from Yawatmal to Achalpur in approximately four hours. Achalpur being a cotton rich area is the main source for cotton production. From here all required cotton was collected. Through the broader Gauge route, it was then destined to Mumbai. Finally this cotton was then exported to the British via Ships. During 1950s, when India Railways were nationalised, Shakuntala Railway was the only exception.

Even till 2016, Shakuntala Express was under British Government rule to which Indian Railways would give royalty of approximately 1.2 cr per annum. Its maximum permissible speed was calculate to be 20 Km/hr thus covering the journey of 190 km in 20-21 hours.

This train used to run on 1924’s Manchester made Z-D steam engines only which were later replaced by diesel steam engine in the year 1994. Unfortunately the improper maintenance of the railways and bushes and dense grasses made the railway tracks functioning impossible. This eventually caused the government to shut down the narrow gauge train’s services in 2020. .

This year India celebrates ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the 75th anniversary of the Country’s Independence. This festive year commemorates the history, culture and special achievements of the people of India. In addition, this year is also very special for India and the Netherlands, as the two countries celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Ambassador HE Reenat Sandhu addressed the Indo Dutch community with the hosting of the Indian flag.
In her address, ambassador Mrs. Reenat Sandhu emphasized strong India And the Netherlands relations, especially synergies & tremendous opportunities to work together in agriculture sector.

Ambassador also visited the India Pavilion at Floriade focussing on the theme of Energizing the Cities depicted through concepts based on Indian philosophy of yoga & Ayurveda.

During the India Day, visitors were mesmerized by the epic performances with three different types of Indian dances. This ranged from a classical dance that originated in Hindu temples to two types of folk dances from Rajasthan and Punjab.

At the Pavilion of India, called ‘ India Spiritual Garden ‘, visitors got a chance to get pampered by an ornate henna tattoo or buy a nice souvenir.

In The Green House , India proudly showcased its southernmost state of Tamil Nadu’s colorful blankets and carpets and products such as bananas, fresh and exotic vegetables, spices and medicinal products, a wide range of coconut-based products, floral arrangements and much more. Special attraction was the miniature of the Dutch Peace Palace crafted diligently with Indian spices such as cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, fennel and cumin. Furthermore, visitors had an opportunity to learn about the Indian philosophy of yoga here with daily meditation sessions.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated at Shri Krishna Balaram Temple in Jagatpura, Jaipur on Friday amid spiritual fervor and Vedic chants echoing the temple surroundings.

A special ceremony of Harinam Sankirtana in the temple will continue throughout the day and around two lakh devotees will visit the temple on the auspicious occasion to get darshan of God.

The temple complex has been decorated with flowers and beautiful lights especially being called from Kolkata, Bengaluru and other parts of the country.

Keeping in mind the security in the temple, more than 100 security personnel are present in the temple, metal detectors and CCTV cameras have been installed in the entire temple premises for screening. Panjiri and fruits are distributed as free prasad to all the devotees who came to the temple.

In Sri Sri Krishna Balaram temple, Krishna’s Phool Bungalow has been decked up with flowers, dress worth Rs 1.25 lakh has been designed in Vrindavan for Thakur ji, and 108 delicacies are offered to Thakur ji. Rose water and kewra from Kannauj has been called for the consecration of God. Laddu Gopal’s Jhula was installed at three places in the temple premises, so that all the devotees could participate in the Jhula service of the Lord.

On the eve of Janmashtami, as Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Dahi Handi will be recognised as an adventure sport under the sports category in his state, Mitali Mishra brings to forth the history of this festival to signify how and why Dahi Handi ritual is celebrated on Janmashtami.

Dahi Handi is a very popular festival organised in the cities of Maharashtra, etc on Krishna Janmashtami which is also called as Gokulashtami.

Handi stands for eastern pots which is used for keeping milk products like butter(makhan), curd(dahi), etc.

Krishna, while growing up with fondness of curd and the makhan, started taking it out secretly from her mother’s vessel. When Krishna and his team started eyeing homes to quench their thirst for makhan, female folks in the entire neighbourhood became cautious and started hanging handi from the ceiling like a chandelier. The idea was to take advantage of short height of young Krishna and His team and keep Dahi Handis out of reach of small hands.

To defeat the idea of female cowherds, Krishna came up with the idea of forming human pyramid. Human pyramid was used as the ladder to climb up and reach the Handi. Since then it has become part of Indian folklore. Every year during Janmashtami, this event from the life of Lord Krishna is played by the young troop of boys.

Besides a normal celebration, a Dahi Handi competition is also organised, where multiple teams participate and compete with one another to win the competition. To make the task challenging, Handi is kept at several floors high at the open ground or at the street crossing. Dahi Handi could be up to several floors high in the sky. Women folks who represent female cowherds from the tale of Lord Krishna prevent any attempts to create human pyramid by throwing the water on the pyramid formation.

Meanwhile, as per Maharashtra CM, the adventure sport tag for Dahi Handi will allow Govindas to apply for government jobs under the sports quota.
