WHAT IS TUBERCULOSIS ?

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). World’s one fourth population has been infected by MTB. TB has been one of the leading cause of deaths in poor people.
Infection of TB is majorly classified into pulmonary (infection in lungs) and extra pulmonary (infection outside lungs). Although this bacteria can prevail in any part of body but majorly is seen in lungs. So here is everything you should know about pulmonary TB.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION

It spreads via droplets of contaminated person through Air , spit, cough, sneeze, breath.
There are certain risk factors associated with TB such as: Chronic smoking (due to tobacco); in HIV/AIDS patients, malnutrition, immunocompromised state. People in close contact with infected patients are more likely to get TB.

WHAT HAPPENS TO TB INSIDE YOUR BODY?

When MTB reaches the lungs, it is engulfed by your immunity cells. But this mycobacterium has mycolic acid which helps in protection from toxins produced by our immune cells to kill MTB. it then reproduces inside the cell which engulfed it and damages that area of the lung killing immune cells and making a focus which can bee seen in X-ray.

SYMPTOMS

Cough for more than 2 weeks; low grade fever; night sweats, loss of appetite leading to weightloss, blood in sputum, fatigue are some features of TB infection.
Usually TB is diagnosed with chest X-ray and sputum examination.

TREATMENT

TB treatment has a long course of 6(2+6) months in India with antibiotics and other medicines. Theses include Isoniazid, Rifampin, Pyrazinamide and Ethambutol majorly. But TB can be Multi Drig resistant as well due to which doctors follow a different approach after 2 months of initial treatment when effects of medicine don’t come out to be desirable.

PREVENTION

There are vaccinations available for prevention of TB. Most importantly BCG (Bacillus Calmette Guerin) vaccine is given at birth for prevention of MTB infection. The government has a National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) for eliminating TB in the country.

CONCLUSION

MTB communicable infection and common in unhygienic, malnourished, immunocompromised patients and poverty prone areas. It can be cured easily if treated sincerely. It does take a lot of time, effort, and medicines to treat but now since it is getting multi drug resistant, it becomes quite essential to prevent and eliminate it.

Kanheri Caves in Mumbai & Vajreshwari in Bhiwandi designated as tourist destinations

Maharashtra Tourism Minister announced on Thursday that the Kanheri Caves near Mumbai and Vajreshwari Town in neighboring Bhiwandi have been designated as tourist destinations.

During the discussion of the tourist department’s budget requests, Lodha remarked, “While Vajreshwari in the Bhiwandi Taluka is well-known for its old temple and hot springs, Kanheri Caves are located in the city’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park.”

A Mumbai celebration modeled after the Dubai carnival will be held in November, according to Lodha. One crore people are expected to attend, according to him.
He predicted that tourism would help the state’s economy.

Water scarcity is already a serious issue in India, nowadays. Thus, the study of the United Nations World Water Development 2023 shows that Asia, notably northeast China, India, and Pakistan, is home to over 80% of those who experience water stress.

India is predicted to be the country most badly impacted, with the worldwide urban population anticipated to grow from 933 million in 2016 to between 1.7 and 2.4 billion people by 2050.

Therefore, the research also noted that 3.6 billion people lack access to properly maintained sanitation, and two billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water.

However, the main causes of this dilemma are described as the rising demand for water brought on by excessive consumption and development, unsustainable water usage, pollution, and unregulated global warming.

Tamil Nadu’s 18th wildlife sanctuary will be at Erode.

A new wildlife sanctuary “Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary” would be established in 2023–2024, and this will be the 18th sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, according to a statement made when the state budget was presented to the House on Monday. There are now two wildlife sanctuaries in the district: Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and Vellode Birds Sanctuary.

Thus, the new sanctuary would cover 80,567 hectares of forest area in the Gobichettipalayam and Anthiyur taluks of the district, but the government will choose where its administrative center will be built.

According to forest authorities, the planned sanctuary, which is now located in the Erode District Forest region, would also be home to 118 different kinds of butterflies, 139 different bird species, and 21 different species of animals. The officials also mentioned that nine tigers’ movement was seen during the previous year’s wildlife census.

At the Erode District Forest Division, animals from STR and neighboring Karnataka were seen migrating. The primary forested areas with a strong tribal population are Burgur, Thattakarai, Thamaraikarai, and Bejelatti. The well-known Varattupallam dam, which serves many areas’ agricultural and drinking water needs, is situated close to Anthiyur.
