Chonira Belliappa Muthamma: India’s First Female IFS Officer

0

Chonira Belliappa Muthamma, the pioneer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) as the first female IFS officer in India, stands as a trailblazer who shattered barriers and championed gender equality during her illustrious career. Her life story is an uplifting narrative of unwavering resolve and tenacity. Muthamma’s accomplishments and her efforts in advancing both the IFS and the women’s rights movement continue to be honored and revered in the present day.

Early Life and Educational Journey

She was born on 24th January 1924, in Virajpet, Coorg. Despite facing adversity following her father’s early demise, she was determined to pursue education. Muthamma excelled in her studies, graduating with honors from Women’s Christian College, Chennai, and obtaining a Master’s degree in English Literature from Presidency College.

Historic Entry into Indian Civil Services

In 1948, Muthamma achieved an extraordinary milestone by becoming the first woman to clear the Indian Civil Services examinations. Her remarkable feat positioned her at the top of the list of candidates for the Indian Foreign Services (IFS), marking the beginning of an illustrious career. However, her entry into the service came with a condition—she had to sign an undertaking that she would resign from her job once she got married.

Trailblazing Diplomatic Career

Muthamma’s diplomatic journey as the first lady IFS officer of India took her to various countries, including postings to Paris, Rangoon, and London. Her career reached a pinnacle in 1970 when she became India’s Ambassador to Hungary, setting a historic precedent as the first woman from within the IFS to hold this position.

Struggle for Gender Equality

Beyond her diplomatic achievements, Muthamma is remembered for her unwavering commitment to gender equality within the Indian Civil Services. When denied a promotion, she challenged discriminatory employment rules, taking the Ministry of External Affairs to court. In a landmark 1979 Supreme Court judgment, her case prevailed, leading to significant changes in service rules. This ruling eliminated the mandatory government permission requirement for women officers’ marriages, marking a critical step toward gender parity.

Legacy and Contributions

Following her retirement in 1982, Muthamma continued her commitment to society. She served on the Independent Commission on Disarmament and Security Issues and was a passionate environmentalist, culinary enthusiast, philanthropist, and author. She made notable contributions, including co-authoring a book on Kodava cuisine and donating land to the Missionaries of Charity for an orphanage and educational purposes.

Her legacy endures as a trailblazer and advocate for women in the Indian Foreign Services and as a symbol of resilience and empowerment. She passed away at the age of 85 in 2009, leaving an indelible mark on India’s diplomatic landscape. Chonira Belliappa Muthamma’s life serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the power of determination and the importance of pushing boundaries to champion equality and progress.

Miniature Eastern Ghats: A Natural Wonderland will be started for public visit in November 2023

0

Nestled in the heart of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), a transformative project known as the ‘Miniature Eastern Ghats’ (MEG) is set to grace approximately 30 acres of reserved land, owned by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department. This visionary endeavor, an integral component of the expansive Eastern Ghats Biodiversity Centre project, is poised to be unveiled to the public in November 2023.

Situated adjacent to the ACA-VDCA cricket stadium, along the historic NH-16 road, the MEG beckons nature enthusiasts and tourists alike to explore the rich tapestry of indigenous flora found in the Eastern Ghats. As visitors approach the MEG, they are greeted by an enchanting entrance gate adorned with imagery of local wildlife, inviting them into a lush and vibrant sanctuary positioned opposite the freshly laid Law College Road, which winds its way towards the serene Vizag-Bheemili beach road.

The ‘Miniature Eastern Ghats’ represents a pioneering initiative in Andhra Pradesh, calling out to those with a deep-seated desire to immerse themselves in the region’s natural beauty. Beyond the impressive assortment of medicinal plants, the MEG introduces an astrology-themed garden, featuring 27 plant species associated with the signs of the zodiac, infusing an element of mystique and fascination into the visitor’s experience. Moreover, this verdant expanse is being enriched with seeds from approximately 200 Eastern Ghats plant species, contributing to the preservation and proliferation of the local flora.

One of the standout features of the ‘Miniature Eastern Ghats’ is the orchidarium, where nearly 200 Eastern Ghats orchid species are carefully cultivated. Orchids, with over 1,300 species documented in Indian forests and a staggering 25,000 species found worldwide, create a mesmerizing and diverse display within the orchidarium. A winding circular walkway guides visitors through this enclosure, adorned with soil blanketed in lush green moss that helps maintain moisture, thanks to the use of artificial vapor circulation fans. The orchidarium serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scientists engaged in the study of the Eastern Ghats’ flora.

According to Visakhapatnam District Forest Officer Ananth Shankar, “The Miniature Eastern Ghats is a one-stop destination to showcase the biodiversity of the Eastern Ghats. Approximately ₹2.5 crore has been invested, drawn from funds provided by various government and private organizations as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.” This initiative is set to open its doors to the public in November, offering a dynamic and educational experience to all who grace its grounds.

The Eastern Ghats, a mountain range extending along India’s eastern coast, from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu, with extensions into parts of Karnataka and Telangana, reaches its zenith at 1,680 meters (5,510 feet). Comprising a diverse mix of charnockite, granite gneiss, khondalite, granite, and quartzite rock formations, this range conceals invaluable resources such as limestone, bauxite, and iron ore—a testament to its origins in an ancient orogenic belt formed during the Archean Era. The notable Madhurawada Dome in the Eastern Ghats mobile belt owes its existence to tectonic interactions with the khondalite suite and quartzite Archean rocks to the north of Visakhapatnam.

This ambitious undertaking stands as a tribute to the wealth of biodiversity in the region, presenting an immersive and inviting experience for those eager to delve into the natural wonders of the Eastern Ghats. The ‘Miniature Eastern Ghats’ embodies a powerful convergence of environmental conservation, education, and the safeguarding of indigenous flora within this extraordinary ecological sanctuary. It promises to be a destination that will captivate the hearts and minds of visitors for years to come.

The Statue of Belief: World’s tallest statue of Shiva inaugurated in Nathwara

0

Nathdwara, a spiritual heaven in the heart of Rajasthan, India, has welcomed a magnificent addition to its landscape – the ‘Statue of Belief’ or ‘Vishwas Swaroopam.’ This awe-inspiring statue of Lord Shiva stands at a towering 369 feet, making it one of the world’s largest Shiva statues and one of the five largest statues globally. As of its inauguration on October 29, 2022, it has become a remarkable pilgrimage site.

Concept and Vision

The concept for the Statue of Belief was conceived by Mr. Madan Paliwal, Chairman of Miraj Group, Udaipur, with the vision of creating a giant statue of Lord Shiva on Ganesh Tekri, a hillock in Nathdwara. His goal was to put Nathdwara on the world’s tourist map, making it a must-visit for pilgrims and travelers alike. Renowned studio Maturam Art played a pivotal role in designing the 369-feet-high statue, while the structural design was executed by Skeleton Consultants. Shapoorji Pallonji E&C took charge of constructing the statue and associated amenities.

Construction and Design

The Statue of Belief boasts a three-layered design. The innermost layer consists of four reinforced cement concrete (RCC) core walls that rise from the hillock’s base, forming the statue’s structural core. The second layer features a structural steel framework, while the third layer comprises a concrete shell constructed from ultra-high-performance concrete molded to the statue’s profile. All three layers are intricately connected, resulting in a masterpiece that faithfully captures the details, expressions, features, and emotions of Lord Shiva.

The statue’s surface has been coated with zinc for increased durability, extending its lifespan to 250 years. It can withstand wind speeds of up to 250 kmph and earthquakes of Zone IV intensity, despite Nathdwara being located in Zone II.

Incredible Features and Amenities

The interior of the Statue of Belief houses an exhibition hall and public viewing galleries accessible via elevators at heights of 20 feet, 110 feet, and 270 feet. A 25-foot-tall statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s celestial bull and vehicle, stands in reverence to Shiva, facing the deity. The surroundings of this majestic statue offer a host of facilities, including parking, pavements, a water body, bridges, landscaping, an amphitheater, a food court, handicraft shops, and an amusement park for children.

A water jet at the apex of the statue symbolizes the Holy River Ganga flowing from Shiva’s matted hair. The statue offers two viewing galleries at heights of 270 feet and 280 feet, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

A Landmark for Pilgrims and Travelers

The ‘Statue of Belief’ serves as a testament to faith and devotion. It has quickly become a landmark in Nathdwara, drawing pilgrims, devotees, and tourists from far and wide. Its grandeur and spiritual significance make it a must-visit destination, offering an opportunity to witness the divine power of belief and capture the incredible views of Rajasthan. The Statue of Belief stands as a magnificent tribute to Lord Shiva and a symbol of unwavering faith.

Glistening Hyderabad: Known as the ‘City of Pearls’

0

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana in southern India, is a city that captures the essence of India’s rich cultural diversity while standing as a beacon of economic prowess. Often referred to as the “City of Pearls,” Hyderabad’s name itself tells a story, with roots in Arabic, where ‘Haydar’ symbolizes strength and ‘abad’ signifies a city. This fusion of cultures and heritage makes Hyderabad a city of historical and cultural importance.

The title “City of Pearls” is well-deserved, given its prominent role in the global pearl trade. Hyderabad’s reputation as a pearl hub extends beyond India, as it supplies exquisite pearls to markets worldwide. The village of Chandanpet, nestled near Hyderabad, serves as the bustling nucleus of pearl businesses. Here, nearly the entire population is engaged in the intricate craft of pearl drilling, cementing Hyderabad’s status as a global pearl trading center.

India is renowned for its diverse cultures and traditions, and Hyderabad is no exception. In South India, this tapestry of cultures is particularly vivid, reflecting in the city’s lifestyle, attire, cuisine, and vibrant festivals.

Hyderabad has played a pivotal role in India’s economic landscape since its inception. Its contribution to Telangana’s economy spans various sectors, including traditional manufacturing, the knowledge industry, and tourism.

The city’s history dates back to 1591 CE when Qutub Shahi Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah laid its foundations, with Charminar as its central landmark. After a brief period under Mughal rule, Hyderabad came under the rule of the Nizams. During the British colonial era, the Nizams entered alliances with the British government, establishing Hyderabad as a princely state.

Throughout its history, Hyderabad has witnessed a succession of rulers and shifting political dynamics. Post-independence, the Nizam’s reluctance to merge his state into the Indian Union led to the tumultuous Telangana Movement. In September 1948, “Operation POLO” saw the Indian army annex Hyderabad with India. In 1956, the state of Hyderabad was divided based on linguistic differences, with Hyderabad becoming the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

In more recent history, in 2014, the state of Telangana emerged, separate from Andhra Pradesh, with Hyderabad as its capital. A new city, Amravati, took on the mantle of being the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad’s economic significance is nothing short of extraordinary. It is renowned as the world’s only diamond market and sustains a population of 68.1 lakh as per the 2011 census. The Information Technology sector, the Biopharmaceutical Industry, Retail, and Real Estate are the driving forces behind Hyderabad’s thriving economy. These industries not only provide for the local populace but also attract migrants from different regions and neighboring states, offering them the means to earn a livelihood in this dynamic and economically vital city.

Hyderabad, the “City of Pearls,” is where history, culture, and economic vitality intertwine to create a unique and thriving metropolis at the heart of India. With its deep-rooted heritage, contemporary economic prowess, and global prominence in the pearl trade, Hyderabad continues to shine as a precious gem among India’s cities.

Day 8 of Navratri: The Story and Significance Maa Mahagauri

0

The story of Maa Mahagauri is steeped in Hindu mythology and takes us back to ancient times when Goddess Parvati expressed her profound desire to marry Lord Shiva. Driven by her determination, she embarked on a path of intense penance, guided by the advice of sage Narada. She ventured into the dense forests, forsaking food and water, to meditate upon Lord Shiva.

As her unwavering devotion continued, her body underwent a profound transformation. Her once radiant form was now coated in dust, a testament to the rigor of her penance. Yet, her devotion remained unshaken.

Moved by her unwavering commitment and dedication, Lord Shiva granted her wish. He blessed her with a sprinkle of holy Ganga Jal, and in an instant, the accumulated grime and dust were washed away. Maa Parvati emerged with a luminous, fair complexion and a radiant aura. This transformation earned her the name ‘Mahagauri,’ where ‘Maha’ signifies ‘great’ and ‘gauri’ denotes ‘fair complexion.’

Maa Mahagauri is depicted as the eighth manifestation of Mother Parvati. She is often portrayed seated on a bull, adorned with three eyes and four hands. In her right hands, she carries a trident and a damaru, while her left hands engage in various mudras. This divine form is also known by other names, such as Shwetambardhara, Vrisharudha, Chaturbhuji, and Shambhavi.
