Election in Argentina – Javier Milei becomes the next President of Argentina

0

Priyanshi Pareek reports on the elections of Argentina..

General elections were held in Argentina on 22 October 2023 to elect the president, vice president, members of the National Congress, and the governors of most provinces. As no presidential candidate won a majority in the first round, a runoff was held on 19 November, in which Javier Milei defeated Sergio Massa.

In the runoff, despite initial predictions, Sergio Massa managed to rally stronger support from various sectors, highlighting innovative economic strategies to counter inflation. With a spirited campaign emphasising unity and economic stability, Massa secured a narrow victory with 51.5% of the vote, edging out Milei.

Upon his win, Massa immediately began assembling a diverse cabinet, inviting experts from different fields to address the economic challenges. His inauguration on 10 December 2023 marked the beginning of a promising term focused on implementing progressive economic reforms and fostering international partnerships for Argentina’s growth.

The 2019-2023 Period

In the 2019 election, Alberto Fernández and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of the Frente de Todos defeated Mauricio Macri’s Juntos por el Cambio, marking a historic win.

Fernández’s presidency faced challenges due to COVID-19 and a debt crisis. Despite a partial economic recovery in 2021–22, inflation soared to 100%, leading to consistently low approval ratings. Critics cited Fernández’s lack of a clear plan and heavy reliance on advice from Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

The 2021 midterms saw heavy losses for Frente de Todos, losing its congressional majority due to public dissatisfaction over inflation and poverty.

Ahead of the 2023 election, Fernández, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, and former President Mauricio Macri opted out of the race. Controversies in Jujuy sparked protests.

The 2023 election occurred amid a dire economic crisis with over 140% inflation and 40% poverty, significantly impacting the ruling party’s reelection prospects.

Electoral System

In Argentina, the presidential election follows the ballotage system, a modified version of the two-round system. To win in a single round, a candidate must secure over 45% of the vote or attain 40% while leading by more than 10 percentage points over the second-place contender. Should no candidate meet these criteria, a runoff occurs between the top two candidates.

Voting is compulsory for citizens aged 18 to 70, while suffrage extends to 16- and 17-year-olds without mandatory voting. Polls open at 08:00 and close at 18:00 (UTC −3) during primaries and both rounds of the election. Initial results start to emerge around 21:00.

India’s Economic Growth Outlook by Goldman Sachs for 2024-25

0

Priyanshi Pareek reports on India’s Economic Growth Outlook..

As India’s population of 1.4 billion people becomes the world’s largest, its GDP is forecast to expand dramatically. Goldman Sachs Research projects India will have the world’s second-largest economy by 2075.

Santanu Sengupta from Goldman Sachs Research emphasises India’s potential lies in leveraging its growing population by increasing labour force participation and providing skill training.

With a low dependency ratio over the next two decades, India has an advantage with a significant working-age population compared to children and elderly. This presents a critical window to focus on setting up manufacturing, expanding services, and developing infrastructure for sustained growth.

What made Goldman Sachs Research’s long-term forecasts for India’s economy?

India’s progress in innovation and technology goes beyond demographics, highlighting the importance of innovation and increased worker productivity for its GDP growth. Greater output per unit of labour and capital is crucial.

Capital investment, driven by a rising savings rate, falling dependency ratios, and a robust financial sector, is poised to boost growth. While the government has played a role, healthy private sector balance sheets suggest conditions for a private capex cycle.

Favourable demographics present growth potential, but leveraging the large labour force necessitates enhancing participation rates through creating opportunities and upskilling.

Risks to Goldman Sachs Research:

The main downside risk for India’s growth lies in the stagnant labour force participation rate, particularly for women. Increasing opportunities, especially for women, can bolster this rate and enhance potential growth.

On the upside, productivity growth can drive expansion, supported by India’s significant strides in digitalization.

The Aadhaar biometric ID system has streamlined public service delivery, widened credit access for smaller businesses, and holds the potential to boost productivity, thereby contributing to growth.

Goldman Sachs said repeated supply shocks along with stable growth are likely to keep inflation above the central point of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) target of 4.0 per cent in 2024. “We forecast headline CPI inflation to decline to 5.1 per cent year-on-year (average) in 2024, above the RBI’s and consensus forecast of 4.7 per cent year-on-year, from an estimated 5.7 per cent in 2023,” it said.

Sectoral Projections for 2024-25: Investment and Consumption

Investment Projection: Goldman Sachs projects a substantial increase in gross fixed investment, forecasting a growth rate of 7.5% in 2024-25, compared to 6.4% in the current fiscal year. This growth is seen as a positive signal for the overall economic landscape.

Private Consumption: Contrastingly, the outlook for private consumption suggests a decline, dropping from 7.5% to 5.5%. This shift underscores the expected shift in the economic driver from consumption to investment in the coming fiscal year.

Aligning with the vision of the Prime Minister, the IAADB will also mark the launch of the Development of Cultural Spaces project at the Red Fort, contributing to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Where people of all backgrounds come together to mark the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. As a tourist visiting India during Diwali, it’s essential to understand how to respect this significant festival and whether non-Hindus are welcome to participate in the celebrations.

Respecting Diwali:

Learn About Diwali: Before your visit, take some time to research and learn about the significance and customs associated with Diwali. Understanding the story of Lord Rama’s return from exile, the lighting of lamps, and the traditions will help you appreciate the festival more deeply.

Be Mindful of Timing: Diwali celebrations typically last for several days, with the main day of the festival falling on the new moon night. During this time, it’s essential to be respectful of the religious and cultural significance. Avoid scheduling loud or disruptive activities during the evenings, like blackjack, as this is when most of the celebrations take place.

Respect Religious Spaces: If you visit temples or other places of worship during Diwali, dress modestly and follow the rules and customs of the place. Remove your shoes before entering and maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor.

Light Lamps Responsibly: While lighting lamps and candles is an essential part of Diwali, it’s crucial to do so responsibly. If you want to join in this tradition, consider using electric lamps or candles to minimize fire hazards. Avoid using fireworks, as they can be dangerous and pollute the environment.

Many foreigners have found it a fulfilling experience to participate in Diwali festivities, including lighting lamps, exchanging gifts, and enjoying traditional sweets.

However, it’s essential to do so with respect and understanding. Here are some tips for non-Hindus looking to celebrate Diwali:

Ask for Permission: If you’re invited to someone’s home to celebrate Diwali, it’s considerate to ask if it’s appropriate for you to participate. Most families are open to sharing their traditions with guests.

Dress Appropriately: Wearing traditional Indian attire is not required, but it can enhance your experience and show respect for the culture. If you’re unsure, you can opt for modest and conservative clothing. Avoid wearing revealing or offensive outfits.

Enjoy the Food: Diwali is a time for delicious sweets and savories. Try some of the traditional dishes and sweets offered during the festival. This will not only delight your taste buds but also show your appreciation for the local cuisine.

Join in the Lights: Lighting lamps or candles is a significant part of Diwali. Feel free to participate and contribute to the festive atmosphere. It’s a beautiful and symbolic gesture that represents the triumph of light over darkness.

The prestigious award ceremony, held at the Taj Mahal in New Delhi on November 18th, witnessed the convergence of literary luminaries, cultural enthusiasts, and the esteemed jury, as Murugan’s work earned accolades for its profound exploration of displacement, permanence, and the human condition.

“Fire Bird”: A Transcendental Exploration

“Fire Bird” stands as Murugan’s twelfth novel, drawing inspiration from his personal experiences of displacement and movement. The narrative navigates the delicate balance between the human longing for permanence and the inherent transience of life. The novel delves deep into Murugan’s characteristic themes, distilling his reflections on the personal, the struggles of life, and the indomitable human spirit.

Celebrating Linguistic Diversity in Literature

The translation of “Fire Bird” from Tamil to English, skillfully executed by Janani Kannan, marks a significant moment in the literary landscape. It is the fifth book in the JCB Prize for Literature’s six-year history to be translated from Indian languages to English, underscoring the richness of linguistic diversity in Indian storytelling. Murugan’s win reinforces the importance of making regional literature accessible to a broader audience through translation.

  3. “Poonachi: or the Story of a Black Goat”: Shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature in 2016, this novel employs an animal protagonist to metaphorically explore human tribulations.
  4. “Songs of a Coward”: A collection of haunting poems penned during Murugan’s challenging times, reflecting on the artist’s struggles and resilience.
  5. “Seasons of the Palm”: A poignant tale of friendship between an untouchable child and an upper-caste counterpart, exposing societal hierarchies.
  6. “Pyre”: Addressing the sensitive topic of honor killings, this novel explores the consequences of love defying societal norms.

JCB Prize for Literature: Elevating Indian Writing

The JCB Prize for Literature, established in 2018, has become a beacon for recognizing and celebrating contemporary Indian writing. By honoring “Fire Bird,” the prize continues to play a crucial role in fostering literary achievements in India.

Perumal Murugan’s literary oeuvre invites readers on a captivating exploration of the human experience. His works unravel the complexities of life, love, and societal norms, inviting readers to engage with the intricacies of the human condition through his masterful storytelling. The Government of India has appointed Vinay M. Tonse as the Managing Director (MD) of the State Bank of India (SBI) until November 30, 2025. This appointment comes as a response to the vacancy left by Swaminathan Janakiraman’s transition to the role of Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank in June.

The recommendation for Tonse’s elevation to the MD position was put forth by the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) in September. Currently serving as the Deputy MD of the state-owned bank, Tonse’s promotion received the final nod from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Tonse’s journey with the State Bank of India began in 1988 when he joined as a Probationary Officer. Over the past three decades, he has exhibited unwavering dedication, serving in various capacities within India and internationally. His versatile leadership skills have been instrumental in steering significant assignments and projects for the State Bank of India, covering areas such as corporate credit, treasury, retail, and international banking.
