UP’s ‘Anokhi Duniya’: The World’s First Ceramic Waste Park Speaks the Language of Sustainability

0

Uttar Pradesh is set to script a unique story of sustainability with the launch of ‘Anokhi Duniya,’ the world’s first park made entirely from ceramic waste. Coming up in Khurja, Bulandshahr district—popularly known as India’s “ceramic capital”—the park is expected to open by September 2025. The initiative reflects the state government’s vision of promoting traditional industries on a global scale while underlining eco-friendly innovation.

Spread across two acres, Anokhi Duniya has been developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model as part of the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. The project transforms more than 80 tonnes of discarded ceramic waste into vibrant art installations, turning broken pitchers, cups, and kettles into symbols of creativity and sustainability.

The park features nearly 100 striking artworks, including 28 large-scale installations, crafted by a team of six artists and 120 skilled local artisans. Each piece demonstrates how discarded materials can be given a second life, aligning with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’s larger mission of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.

Designed as more than just an art space, Anokhi Duniya promises a comprehensive visitor experience. Alongside colorful ceramic sculptures and artistic structures, the park offers selfie points, landscaped greenery, and a café, making it a lively hub for families, tourists, and art enthusiasts alike. Its immersive design is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, shining a global spotlight on Khurja’s craftsmanship.

Built at a cost of ₹5.86 crore, the project also carries strong economic potential. It is expected to generate employment opportunities for artisans, strengthen the region’s economy, and reinforce Khurja’s position as a world-class ceramic hub. With a nominal entry fee, the park ensures financial sustainability while remaining accessible to the wider public.

More than just a tourist attraction, Anokhi Duniya represents the Yogi government’s vision of blending heritage with sustainability. By turning waste into wonder, the park not only preserves Khurja’s traditional ceramic identity but also highlights a path for industries to embrace eco-conscious development. In doing so, Uttar Pradesh positions itself as a state where culture, economy, and environment come together in harmony.

Chasing the First Light: Arunachal’s Dong Village to Host India’s First Sunrise Festival

0

When the first rays of the sun touch India, they fall on the quiet hills of Dong village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district. Nestled at 1,240 metres above sea level, this tiny hamlet near the India-China-Myanmar tri-junction has long been a hidden gem for trekkers and explorers. Now, Dong is stepping into the spotlight as the state gears up to host the first-ever Sunrise Festival from 29 December 2025 to 2 January 2026.

For the people of Arunachal, the sunrise has always been more than just a daily ritual. It symbolizes hope, beginnings, and the rhythm of life in the eastern frontier. By turning Dong’s unique geographical position into a celebration, the festival promises to offer something rare: a chance to witness the country’s first dawn of the New Year in a land where nature meets culture.

The five-day festival is designed as a blend of adventure, culture, and eco-tourism. Visitors can trek through verdant forests, camp under starlit skies, and indulge in ethnic cuisine prepared by local communities. Traditional dances, folk songs, and storytelling sessions will showcase the indigenous heritage of Arunachal’s tribes, while adventure seekers can look forward to trekking trails, riverside picnics, and guided eco-tours.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu has called the festival a major step in branding Arunachal Pradesh as a “sunrise state for tourism.” With new air routes under the UDAN scheme improving connectivity to Tezu and Dibrugarh airports, reaching Dong is no longer the challenge it once was. From Tezu, a road trip through winding valleys brings travelers to the village—an adventure in itself.

But beyond tourism, the festival has deeper significance. Dong’s location near international borders makes it a strategic frontier, and developing it for tourism aligns with both economic growth and national security objectives. The event is expected to boost local entrepreneurship, as villagers open homestays, food stalls, and craft markets for visitors.

As the world looks for fresh destinations to celebrate the New Year, Dong offers an experience unlike any other. Imagine ringing in 2026 by standing on a hilltop, watching the very first sunrise of the year—long before the rest of India even stirs awake. That’s the promise of the Sunrise Festival, a journey not just to a place, but to the edge of time itself.

Drones Helping Mount Everest Combat Its Growing Trash Problem

Drones are rewriting the Everest cleanup story — lifting tons of garbage and gear, cutting costs, and saving lives. By blending technology with sustainability, they are helping protect the world’s tallest peak while easing the burden on climbers and sherpas.

A Sky-High Trash Problem

Mount Everest, once the symbol of unspoiled beauty, now struggles with an ugly label: “the world’s highest dumpster.” Decades of expeditions have left behind heaps of cans, bottles, oxygen cylinders, tents, and climbing gear.

Until now, cleanup relied on manpower or helicopters — both risky and expensive. “The only options were helicopters and manpower, with no option in between,” said Raj Bikram Maharjan of Nepal-based Airlift Technology, the company pioneering drone use on Everest.

This spring, two DJI FC 30 heavy-lift drones flew missions from Base Camp to Camp 1 at 6,065 meters, hauling 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of waste in record time.

Last year’s pilot run on nearby Mount Ama Dablam proved the concept, removing 641 kilograms of trash. Encouraged by the success, Everest authorities gave drones the green light.

“This is a revolutionary drive in the mountains to make them cleaner and safer,” said Tashi Lhamu Sherpa, vice chairman of the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality.

Faster, Safer, More Affordable

Compared to human teams, drones are rewriting efficiency.

“In just 10 minutes, a drone can carry as much garbage as 10 people would take six hours to carry,” said Tshering Sherpa, head of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee.

Each drone costs around $20,000, but manufacturers partly subsidize the effort as a branding opportunity, while local authorities cover the rest.

Beyond Trash: A Lifeline for Climbers

The drones are also lightening the load for climbers, ferrying oxygen cylinders, ropes, and ladders across the treacherous Khumbu Icefall — one of Everest’s deadliest sections.

“People in the fixing team were very happy,” said 19-year-old record climber Nima Rinji Sherpa. “The drone can carry ladders or oxygen, saving huge time and energy.”

Expanding Horizons

Next month, Airlift Technology plans to deploy drones on Mount Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest peak.

“It’s not just in war that drones are useful,” Maharjan said. “They can save lives and protect the environment. For climate and humanitarian work, this technology is going to be a game changer.”

As Everest’s 2025 season showed, technology — when applied wisely — can safeguard even the harshest landscapes while protecting the people who dare to explore them. ( Inputs from AFP)

Why Fitch Upgrade Is A Cool Breeze for India Amid Trump’s Tariff Heat

0

Global rating agency Fitch has revised India’s growth outlook for FY26 upward to 6.9%, from its earlier projection of 6.5% in the June Global Economic Outlook (GEO). The move comes as a relief — almost like a cool wind — against the backdrop of mounting global trade tensions triggered by former US President Donald Trump’s renewed tariff measures.

According to Fitch, domestic demand will remain the key driver of growth, supported by strong real income dynamics and looser financial conditions that will encourage investment. The upgrade follows a sharper-than-expected surge in activity between Q1 and Q2 of FY25, underscoring India’s resilience despite external headwinds.

India’s real GDP growth hit 7.8% year-on-year in Q2 FY25, compared to 7.4% in Q1, comfortably beating Fitch’s earlier 6.7% forecast. Much of this momentum was fueled by the services sector, which expanded by a striking 9.3%, alongside solid private and public consumption spending.

However, Fitch cautioned that the economy is currently operating slightly above its potential, meaning growth is likely to moderate in the coming years:

  • FY27: 6.3%
  • FY28: 6.2%

At the same time, external risks loom large. The US has imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising concerns for exporters and investors. While Fitch expects these tariffs to be negotiated down eventually, the uncertainty could dampen business sentiment in the near term.

On the brighter side, inflation is cooling: July headline inflation eased to 1.6%, the lowest since June 2017, aided by lower food prices. Core inflation also dropped below 4% for the first time in six months.

In terms of monetary policy, Fitch forecasts the RBI will cut rates by 25 basis points towards the end of 2025 to support growth, holding them steady until late 2026 before gradual tightening resumes in 2027.

Nourish Your Gut: Dr. Saurabh Sethi Ranks Breakfast Options for Optimal Gut Health

0

A Gastroenterologist’s Guide to Starting Your Day Right
Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but for your gut, it can be transformative. Dr. Saurabh Sethi—gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford—has ranked popular breakfast foods on a scale of -10 to 10 based on their impact on gut health. His approach emphasizes the “4 Ps”: Protein, Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Polyphenols. By prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense foods, Dr. Sethi highlights ways to nourish the microbiome and avoid the pitfalls of sugary, processed meals.

Top Breakfast Choices for a Healthy Gut

These options score highest for balancing the microbiome, supporting digestion, and providing anti-inflammatory benefits:

  • Greek Yogurt with Berries (10/10): A perfect blend of probiotics, protein, and antioxidants that reduce inflammation and strengthen gut bacteria.
  • Vegetable and Egg Scramble (9/10): Rich in protein, vitamins, and fiber, this nutrient-packed dish supports satiety and gut function.
  • Overnight Oats with Chia or Flax Seeds (8/10): High in fiber and omega-3s, this gut-friendly staple promotes regular digestion and lasting fullness.
  • Smoothie with Unsweetened Kefir, Berries, and Spinach (7/10): Combines probiotics, prebiotics, and antioxidants for a refreshing microbiome boost.

Moderately Healthy Breakfasts

These provide nutrition and some gut benefits but fall short of the top tier:

  • Sprouted Grain Toast with Nut Butter (6/10): More fiber than refined bread, with added protein and healthy fats from nut butter.
  • Upma or Savory Oats with Vegetables (5/10): Nutritious and filling, though lacking the probiotic benefits of fermented foods.
  • Steel-Cut Oatmeal with Banana or Dates (4/10): Fiber-rich but slightly reduced in score due to higher natural sugar content.
  • Whole Wheat Toast with Jam (3/10): Some fiber from the bread, but sugar in jam reduces its gut health value.

Breakfasts to Avoid for Gut Health

Processed and sugary options score low for promoting inflammation and disrupting gut balance:

  • Store-Bought Granola (2/10): Typically high in added sugars and oils, reducing nutritional benefits.
  • White Bread Toast with Butter (1/10): Refined carbs with little fiber, offering minimal digestive support.
  • Sugary Breakfast Cereals (-5/10): Loaded with refined sugar and additives that damage the gut microbiome.
  • Fast-Food Burritos (-10/10): Heavy in preservatives, unhealthy fats, and refined carbs—worst for gut health.

The Power of the 4 Ps

Dr. Sethi’s framework—Protein, Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Polyphenols—serves as a foundation for gut-friendly eating. By selecting whole, unprocessed foods rich in these elements, individuals can foster a thriving microbiome, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation. Steering clear of sugary, processed breakfasts is essential for sustaining long-term gut health and overall wellness.

Swati Balani: Meet This Woman Who Transformed Her House Into Sanctuary for Animals

0

A Unique Sanctuary Where Animals Coexist in Harmony

In the heart of Varanasi, Swati Balani has transformed her home into a sanctuary for over 250 animals from diverse species, including dogs, cats, bulls, eagles, and pigeons. Despite their differences, these animals live together in peace and love, earning the house the affectionate nickname of a “private zoo.” For Swati, this is not just a home but a haven where injured and stray animals find care, compassion, and a sense of belonging.

A Lifelong Passion for Animal Welfare

Swati’s love for animals began in childhood, a trait she inherited from her grandparents, who also kept many animals at home. For the past decade, she has dedicated her life to caring for these creatures, bringing injured animals home, ensuring they receive medical attention, and providing them with a nurturing environment. Her commitment runs so deep that she chose to forgo marriage to focus entirely on her mission of animal care. “Where there is love, everything is possible,” Swati says, attributing the peaceful coexistence of her animals to the power of compassion.

A Home, Not a Zoo

While some call her residence a private zoo, Swati insists it is simply a home filled with love and care. Each animal has a unique name, reflecting the personal bond she shares with them. Her dogs include Sultan, Laddu, Chunni, Gattu, Roxy, Kalu, Ravan, Shera, Sabzi, Machli, Jhumru, Barfi, Lisa, Bulbul, Jimmy, Micro, and Berry. The cats go by Chulbul, Jackie, Piksi, Honey, Suli, Billu, and Jordan, while her eagle is lovingly named Cheelu. Dozens of pigeons and other birds also find refuge on her rooftop, and Swati ensures that stray animals in the neighborhood are fed regularly.

A Family Effort Supported by Friends

Swati’s family plays a crucial role in her mission. Her mother, a retired medical officer, and her father, a retired bank officer, support her endeavors. With the help of friends, Swati manages the expenses of caring for her large animal family. After completing her management education in Mumbai and briefly working there, she returned to Varanasi, where her heart truly lies, to continue her work with animals.

Rescuing and Rehabilitating Strays

Swati’s routine involves rescuing injured animals she encounters on the streets. “Seeing an injured animal pains me,” she shares. After consulting veterinarians, she brings them home, where they often stay, adapting to the loving environment and forming bonds with other animals. Her approach ensures that even species typically at odds, like dogs and cats, coexist harmoniously, playing and living together under one roof.

A Legacy of Love and Care

Swati’s home defies the notion that dogs and cats are natural enemies, proving that with the right upbringing, animals can live in harmony. Her mother, Rita Balani, beams with pride at her daughter’s dedication, noting that Swati’s love for animals has been evident since childhood. By choosing to dedicate her life to these voiceless creatures, Swati has created a unique legacy in Varanasi—a home where love transcends species, fostering peace and unity among animals.
