India has a new face at the helm of its education system. Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and five-time Member of Parliament from Karnataka, was appointed Union Education Minister on July 25, 2026, following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. The appointment came at a crucial time, with the Ministry of Education facing the challenge of restoring public confidence after nationwide protests over examination irregularities.
While taking charge of the Education Ministry, Joshi continues to hold his existing responsibilities as Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, making education an additional portfolio entrusted to him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
From Dharwad to National Politics
Born on 27 November 1962 in Dharwad, Karnataka, Pralhad Joshi comes from a middle-class family and completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) before entering public life. Active in social and political work from a young age, he became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later joined the BJP, gradually building his political career through grassroots organisation and party work.
Known for his calm demeanour and organisational skills, Joshi rose through the BJP ranks during the party’s expansion in Karnataka.
A Five-Time Member of Parliament
Joshi has represented the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency since 2004, winning five consecutive parliamentary elections. His consistent electoral success has made him one of Karnataka’s most experienced BJP leaders.
Over the years, he has held several important positions within the party, including serving as the President of the BJP’s Karnataka unit, where he played a significant role in strengthening the party’s organisational base in the state.
His long parliamentary career has earned him a reputation as a dependable administrator and an experienced legislator.
Key Roles in the Union Government
Before taking charge of the Education Ministry, Joshi had already handled several important ministries in the Union Government.
From 2019 to 2024, he served as the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, where he was responsible for coordinating government business in Parliament and building consensus across political parties.
He later took charge of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, overseeing India’s food security programmes, public distribution system, renewable energy expansion and clean energy initiatives.
His appointment to the Education Ministry reflects the government’s confidence in his administrative experience during a period when the education sector requires careful leadership.
Taking Charge Amid Challenges
Pralhad Joshi assumes office at one of the most challenging moments for India’s education system.
His predecessor, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned following widespread protests over alleged examination irregularities, including the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The crisis sparked demands for greater transparency, stronger examination security and institutional reforms.
