The centuries-old Panihati Dahi-Chida Festival, which celebrates the timeless values of humility, devotion and selfless service in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, was observed with extraordinary grandeur at Gupta Vrindavan Dham on Friday. Recreating the historic festival associated with Srila Raghunath Das Goswami and Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the temple witnessed an overwhelming turnout as hundreds of thousands of devotees from Jaipur and surrounding areas gathered to participate in the annual celebrations and seek the blessings of Sri Sri Krishna-Balarama.
500 kg Flower Petals Transform Divine Water Pastime into Grand Spectacle
The centrepiece of the celebrations was a divine pool filled with 30,000 litres of sanctified water, prepared using water from seven sacred rivers, rose water, kewra essence, aromatic perfumes and 500 kg of flower petals. Amid the rhythmic chanting of the holy names and vibrant sankirtan, Sri Sri Krishna-Balarama were ceremonially offered a cooling water pastime, recreating the joyous mood of the historic Panihati Dahi-Chida Festival and providing devotees with one of the most captivating moments of the day.

1,100 kg of Fruits and a Dry Fruit Outfit Crafted Over 551 Hours
Adding to the splendour, Sri Sri Krishna-Balarama were adorned with an offering of 1,100 kg of fresh fruits, while devotees presented the Deities with a unique outfit crafted entirely from 15 varieties of dry fruits. The intricate attire, prepared over 551 hours through painstaking devotional effort, became one of the festival’s major attractions.
Grand Procession, Maha-Abhishek and Once-a-Year Maha-Bhog

The temple reverberated with devotional music as devotees danced in ecstasy during the grand palanquin procession of Sri Sri Krishna-Balarama. The celebrations also featured a Maha-Abhishek of Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai, during which the Deities were ceremonially bathed with fruit juices and fragrant flowers amidst continuous chanting and prayers.
As part of the traditional observance, the temple offered a Maha-Bhog comprising 21 special varieties of chida-dahi (flattened rice mixed with yogurt), a sacred preparation made only once a year to commemorate the Panihati festival. The offering reflects the historic event in which Srila Raghunath Das Goswami, following the instruction of Sri Nityananda Prabhu, lovingly served yogurt and flattened rice to assembled devotees on the banks of the Ganges at Panihati in present-day West Bengal.
Festival Commemorates a Historic Act of Devotion

Explaining the significance of the festival, Sri Amitasana Das, President of Gupta Vrindavan Dham, said Panihati is the place where Srila Raghunath Das Goswami first met Sri Nityananda Prabhu. As a gesture of humility and service, Raghunath Das Goswami was instructed to feed all devotees with dahi-chida, giving birth to a tradition that continues to inspire devotees centuries later. The occasion is also revered as Danda Mahotsav, or the “Festival of Divine Punishment,” symbolising the spiritual rewards of surrender, service and devotion.
The celebrations concluded with thousands of devotees offering prayers and participating in sankirtan, as Gupta Vrindavan Dham once again recreated one of Gaudiya Vaishnavism’s most cherished festivals, blending history, spirituality and devotion into a memorable annual celebration.
