Omicron: India records first omicron death in Udaipur, Rajasthan

On Wednesday 5 January,  2022 India recorded the first death due to Omicron variant of Covid-19 in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

According to Union Heath Ministry, a 73 year old man who died in Udaipur hospital on December 31 showed the presence of the variant. He was found infected with Omicron in genome sequencing and was tested negative for the infection twice.

Previously on December 21 and December 25 the man was tested negative twice but a sample was sent for genome sequencing and the results were received on December 25, in which it was detected that he was infected with the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The man was found covid positive on December 15 and had symptoms like fever, cough and rhinitis and therefore, was admitted to the hospital.

As per reports, he died due to post-Covid pneumonia coupled with comorbidities — diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hypothyroidism.

Talking about the rise in cases, a total of 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across 24 states and UTs so far.
