Cyclone Michaung Hits Andhra Pradesh Coast, Triggers Widespread Impact

The landfall process of Cyclonic Storm Michaung was completed on December 5, according to the India Meteorological Department. The severe cyclonic storm made landfall along the South Andhra Pradesh coast, near Bapatla, with sustained winds reaching 90-100 kmph during the two-hour span from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The eye of the storm was situated near Bapatla, causing significant disruption as heavy rain and high-velocity winds battered coastal areas, uprooting trees, electric poles, and blowing off advertisement hoardings. The severe weather conditions led to a death toll of seven in Chennai and neighboring districts, with over 61,600 people relocated to relief camps across nine districts, as reported by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed 29 teams to Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Puducherry for relief and rescue operations. Additionally, efforts are underway to source additional manpower for relief operations in Chennai and surrounding areas, according to Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena.

In the aftermath, Chennai airport resumed flight operations, but cancellations persisted, with 136 flights canceled and around 260 flights expected to operate. Amid complaints of power cuts in rain-affected parts of Chennai, the government stated that 80% of power supply and 70% of mobile networks have been restored.

As the severe cyclonic storm Michaung moves northwards, the focus remains on relief efforts and restoring normalcy in the affected regions. A total of 29 NDRF teams are actively engaged in addressing the aftermath of the cyclonic impact. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan was among those rescued by Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services in Karapakkam, underscoring the widespread impact of Cyclone Michaung in the region.
