In Burhanpur, women associated with self-help groups are extracting fiber from banana stem and turning it into a wide range of eco-friendly products such as sanatry pads,bags, stoles, pen stands, keyrings, purses, decorative hangings, dolls, baskets, and more. These handcrafted items are not only affordable but also support sustainable living and promote environmental consciousness. This initiative is part of the Central Government’s ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) scheme, and it is changing lives — particularly for rural women seeking economic independence.
Women Empowerment Through Skill and Sustainability
With the support of the District Panchayat, National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), District Trade and Commerce (DTAC), and the Tourism Department, training programs have been organized to teach women how to process banana stem fiber and create marketable products. Today, women in villages like Daryapur and Khaknar have become skilled artisans. Some have even mastered the art of coloring and refining banana threads, giving the products a vibrant and market-ready look.
As a result, many women have found sustainable employment, boosting both their income and confidence. The initiative not only provides financial support but also uplifts communities by encouraging self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
A Booming Banana Industry
Banana farming is a significant part of Burhanpur’s economy. The district has approximately 23,650 hectares under banana cultivation, producing nearly 1.6 million metric tons of bananas every year. More than 18,000 farmers are engaged in banana farming, and the annual banana trade in the district exceeds ₹1,700 crore.
