SNDT Women’s University: the first women university in India

Shreemati Naithibai Damodar Thackeray Women’s University is the first ever Women’s University established in India by Bharat Ratna Dr Dhondho Keshav Kharve in 1916 with the motive of providing quality education to women.

Dr Dhondho Keshav Kharve’s vision was ” An Enlightened Woman is a Source of Infinite Strength” and hence he started, the University with only 5 enrolments to suit Women’s aspirations in the fast changing world.

The first five women graduated in 1921 from this university. And now the range of college students has been increased by 15000.

The university got recognition in 1951 and in 2000 it became the first university to get high rankings in accreditation in India.

It is probably one such university which offers education from KG1 to PhD students with all the possible courses. In a century-old existence, the university has grown into a multidisciplinary institution by providing professional, technical and liberal arts programmes from Kindergarten to PhD. 

The university is committed to fulfilling the alterations of socio-economic needs, with human values ,social responsibility and quality in activities through vocational and professional courses.

The university Headquarters is in Churchgate Campus, Mumbai and the other two campuses of this university are at Juhu, Mumbai and Karve Road, Pune
