Nestled in the captivating region of Jhalawar, Rajasthan, lies the quaint village of Kolvi, known for its intriguing Buddhist caves.  Location

Located in the southern part of Jhalawar district, Kolvi Village is nestled amidst picturesque landscapes. Surrounded by lush green fields and gently rolling hills, the village exudes a serene and tranquil ambiance, providing an ideal setting for exploring its ancient Buddhist heritage. They are carved out in laterite rock hill. The Buddhist site has stupas, chaityas, containing figures of Buddha.

It is believed that Buddhist monks inhabited the region during this time, leaving behind a rich legacy of art and architecture. The caves were first visited and reported by Dr. Impey in 1854. The discovery of a rock-cut chaitya made Kolvii a striking and majestic site.

 The Buddhist Caves and Architectural Marvels

They are in a state of natural weathering resulting complete damage on northern and eastern side, but their remains are important in architecture. The group has 50 caves in which many have lost their figure faces due to decaying. Few caves have open or pillared verandah. Originally ruins of 64 momk cells  and similar structure were reported from Kolvi but presently Archaeological survey of India has located only 45 structures. Kolvi shrines have images of Buddha and largest image is a 12 feet standing Buddha in a preaching posture.
