The International Museum Day was first held in 1977, and since then grown in popularity by leaps and bounds.
Around 20,000 museums participated in International Museum Day in 2009 when grand events were held in over 90 nations.
In the next year, 98 nations participated in the International Museum Day celebration, and in 2011, around 100 nations participated.
In 2011, the International Museum Day poster was translated into 37 languages and was attended by 129 nations in 2012, with 30,000 museums participating in the festival.
