Bandhani, Rajasthan

Bandhani, which comes under the type of tie and dye textiles, is a beautiful handicraft famously done in Rajasthan, India. Bandhani is decorated by plucking clothes with fingernails into many tiny bindings that form a figurative design. Bandhani is a very old practice, which was started some 5000 years ago.
The beautiful art of Bandhani is a favorably skilled process which involves high patience and understanding. The fabrics are dyed by tightly tying textiles using threads, wires, stones , grains like cereals and rice etc. The fabrics are dipped in natural colours as it is a handicraft process.
The main natural colors used in Bandhani are yellow, red, blue, green and black, and it is believed that different colors convey different meanings in this beautiful textile.

Madhubani , Bihar

Madhubani is a beautiful style of painting practised in the Mithila region of Bihar. Madhubani painting originated from Bihar some 2500 years ago, whose legacy still continues in Bihar.
Also called as Mithila painting, it is created using using fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens and match sticks using natural dyes and pigments with a main theme of traditional geometric patterns.
The paintings were traditionally practised on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.
Madhubani paintings are two dimensional eye catching imagery, which are famous not only in Bihar but worldwide. It has also received GI (Geographical Indication) status.

Gond Art, Madhya Pradesh

Gond art is a unique form of painting originated from folk and tribal art and is practiced by one of the largest tribes in India, ‘the Gond’, they are predominantly from Madhya Pradesh.
Gond art includes a form of story telling through paintings which is rooted in their folk tales and culture.
It is believed that Gond paintings are a reflection of man’s close connection with his natural surroundings. While a majority of Gond paintings do take inspiration from nature.
The painting is created using charcoal, coloured soil, plant sap, mud, flowers, leaves and even cow dung, by carefully drawing lines in such a way that coveys a sense of movement in still images to make it look alive. To add more details, dots and dashes are used. Gond paintings are made using bright vivid colours such as white, red, blue and yellow.

Phulkari, Punjab and Haryana

Phulkari a folk embroidery art of Punjab are created using floral works, motifs and geometrical shapes with soft silky floss threads. It is an ancient art originating from Punjab in 15th century. A rural handmade complex art which requires patience to make one. Phulkari embroidery is mostly very bright, vibrant and it brings color to people’s lives. The Phulkari art is very popular worldwide and it is made by women in Punjab which celebrates womanhood.

Rogan Painting, Gujarat

Rogan Painting is an cloth printing art which is famously practiced in the Kutch district of Gujarat.
Rogan Painting is produced by boiling castor oil for about two days and then adding vegetable pigments and a binding agent which results in a paint which is thick and shiny.
Rogan Painting is done by applying the patterns using metal blocks with patterns carved into them, designs are produced freehand by trailing thread-like strands of paint off of a stylus.
Half of a design is painted, then the cloth is folded in half, transferring a mirror image to the other half of the fabric. The designs include floral motifs, animals, and local folk art.
