India is observing National Statistics Day 2026 today, marking the birth anniversary of renowned statistician Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, whose pioneering work laid the foundation of the country’s modern statistical system. Celebrated annually on June 29, the day highlights the indispensable role of statistics in policymaking, governance, economic planning, and sustainable development.

This year is particularly significant as it marks the 20th edition of National Statistics Day since its inception in 2007. The national event is being organised by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.

Theme 2026: ‘Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data’

The theme for this year’s celebration, “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,” underscores the growing importance of government-generated data in shaping informed public policies. Administrative data—collected through routine government activities such as tax records, healthcare services, education, civil registration, and welfare schemes—has become an invaluable resource for evidence-based governance.

By effectively integrating and analysing such datasets, governments can reduce dependence on large-scale surveys, improve the accuracy and timeliness of official statistics, lower costs, and make faster, data-driven decisions. The theme also reflects India’s broader push towards digital governance and the creation of a robust national data ecosystem.

Major Highlights of the Day

The national celebration will feature addresses by senior government officials and statistical experts, including keynote speeches on the future of India’s statistical system.

Several important publications will also be released, including:
●Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – National Indicator Framework Progress Report 2026
●Labour Market Dynamics in Million-plus Cities
●Urban Unincorporated Enterprise Landscape
●Handbook on Harmonisation of Datasets
●MoSPI Vision Document 2026–2031

These reports are expected to provide valuable insights into India’s economic and social development while strengthening the country’s official statistical framework.

Another key attraction of the event is a panel discussion titled “From Silos to Synergy: Advancing Administrative Data Harmonisation,” where experts from government, academia, and international organisations will deliberate on improving data integration for better governance.

Why National Statistics Day Matters

In an era driven by data, reliable statistics have become the backbone of effective governance. Whether it is tracking inflation, employment, healthcare, education, agriculture, or monitoring progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), quality data enables governments to design targeted policies, allocate resources efficiently, and evaluate the impact of development programmes.

Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis’ pioneering contributions—including the development of large-scale sample surveys and the establishment of India’s statistical institutions—continue to influence the country’s planning process even today.

As India moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, strengthening the quality, accessibility, and integration of official data remains a national priority. National Statistics Day 2026 serves as a reminder that accurate statistics are not merely numbers—they are the foundation of informed decisions, transparent governance, and inclusive development.

“Better Data, Better Decisions, Better India.”
