World Tourism Day: Know its date, theme, history and significance
World Tourism Day, each year, is observed on September 27 to celebrate tourism’s unique ability to ensure that nobody is left behind as the world looks to the future withe everything opening up gradually while fighting the pandemic.
The objective to celebrate the day to highlight the travel sector’s importance in preserving and promoting culture and heritage from across the world.
World Tourism Day Date and history
The World Tourism Day is celebrated annually ever since 1980 across the world on September 27. In 1970, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization were adopted which paved the way for the establishment of UNWTO after five years. The first World Tourism Day was celebrated as an international observance on September 27, 1980 by the UNWTO.

The World Tourism Day aims at raising awareness on the importance of tourism in affecting the social, cultural, political and economic values of international community.

The theme for World Tourism Day 2021 is “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”. It has been designed to look beyond tourism statistics and acknowledge that, behind every number, there is a person.
