World Heritage Day, also called as International Day for Monuments and Sites, is celebrated across the globe on April 18. This aims at restoring and preserving the diverse cultural heritage that makes the world what it is.
Each country and community has its own history and its remnants are present, either in the form of monuments or items in a museum. Monuments form a very important part of this. Therefore, it is extremely important to conserve and protect them from any kind of harm that can tamper with its integrity.
History of World Heritage Day
This day, originally, was suggested by the International Council of Monuments and Sites in 1982. UNESCO accepted their proposal in 1983 during their 22nd General Conference.
World Heritage Day 2021 Theme
The theme of the day this year is ‘Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures.’
Not everything in our history has been positive as there are a few things which are violent and probably best to be forgotten. While a community can think this way, others can look at this from another point of view. A monument is constructed to represent it which might be a contested point of view.
Significance of World Heritage Day
The day plays an important role in preserving the cultural integrity of a community or country. We have an onus to save our rich culture from any kind of harm. When we join hands, then only our history has a chance to survive on its own.
