Located 2650 meters above the sea level, Gulmarg has a picturesque beauty and it remains blissfully surrounded with snow-capped mountains covered with white sheet of snow and there are wild mountain flowers all across.

History behind the name Gulmarg 

The original name of Gulmarg was ‘Gaurimarg’ .  Legend says that the reason behind the name gaurimarg is that this beautiful place is located somewhere near Himalayas which is considered as the Adobe of Lord Shiva while Gauri is the name of Lord Shiva’s wife hence the place got the name as Gaurimarg( path of Goddess Gauri). 

But in 16th century, Chak ruler Yousuf Shah renamed Gaurimarg to Gulmarg which means place of rose as it has wide variety beautiful wild mountains flowers. 

What makes Gulmarg special 

Gulmarg is special for tourists for diverse reasons. Firstly, it is considered to have world’s second highest golf course ,which is situated at an altitude of 2650m. 

Top attraction in Gulmarg is Rani temple which is situated on small hillock in the centre of Gulmarg. People throng here to worship lord shiva. The temple became famous when Bollywood song ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ of  Rajesh Khanna  and Mumtaz was pictured here in the year 1970. 

Other than this temple, there are lot of beautiful destinations to explore here; some of them are -Gulmarg Gandola, Alpather lake, outer circle walk, Niggle Nallah, Drang Kongdori. 

Film shooting in Gulmarg 

Unlike other tourist spots in the Jammu and Kashmir, Gulmarg remains open all year round for film shooting.

Located in the heart of Kashmir, Gulmarg has been getting attention from different movie directors. Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz had danced together on ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ while Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia sang ‘Hum tum ek kamre mein band hon’ in the film ‘Bobby’  in this beautiful place. 

Best time to visit Gulmarg 

It is a year round destination but March to June is the best time to explore the beauty of this paradise. If you want to enjoy the snow fall, then October to February would be an excellent option. 

How to get in Gulmarg 

The nearest airport to Gulmarg is Sringar’s Airport. Also there is road way which connects Srinagar from Gulmarg. 

The distance between Gulmarg and Srinagar is around 64km. 

Train is also a best option to get in Gulmarg you can take train from Jammu. 

Gulmarg is untouched with the chaos of city life and has always stayed away from heat wave and hence is considered as the top rated tourist attractions
