Fatehsagar Lake is located in Udaipur at a pristine location offering mesmerising view of hill, water, and flora. Speaking the story of our excellant ancient water storage techniques, it gives clues that water was considered as an asset in ancient days too. Shubham Kumawat writes for EBNW Story
Built by Maharana Jai Singh of Udaipur in 1678, it was reconstructed in 1888 by Maharana Fateh Singh after it was washed away in floods.
The waterbody is the second largest artificial lake situated in the north of Lake Pichola right across the Moti Magri Hill.
Surrounded by the high Aravalli hills on three sides and Pratap Memorial on its north side, the lake is known as the pride of Udaipur which is home to three tiny islands offering many exciting activities. The lake has a rich variety of flora and fauna
The historical information says that in 1888, the first lake got washed away due to floods.
At this time, Maharana Fateh Singh came to the rescue and ordered the construction of a dam which is now known as the Connaught Bund or embankment. The 800-meter long dam was built on the eastern side of the lake.
In the medieval era, the cost of the renovation was 6 lakh rupees which were incurred by the king. The dam is still considered the second most significant source of drinking water for people in Udaipur. Therefore, the lake has been named Lake Fatehsagar to honor the generosity of king Maharana Fateh Singh.
Queen Victoria’s third son, Duke of Connaught, laid the foundation for its new construction which was named after Raja Maharana Fateh Singh. Since then this lake is known as Fateh Sagar Lake.
The main reason for bringing this lake was to make arrangement for adequate water supply in Udaipur and to increase the height of water table under ground.
