The most auspicious fast considered in Hinduism is said to be celebrated on the Tritiya tithi of Shukla paksha in Bhadrapada month. The festival is addressed explicitly to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The married women, on this day, pray to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati that their marriage life turns out as fruitful as theirs and as divine as theirs.

However, the fast can be observed by any married or unmarried woman. The unmarried women pray for their future partner.
