Vaidehi Bhrgava
Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj or Bhau Beej, is a cherished Hindu festival celebrating the eternal bond between brothers and sisters. Observed on the second day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu month of Kartika, this festival holds deep significance in Indian culture. Its timing aligns closely with Diwali, amplifying the festive spirit.
The origin of Bhai Dooj can be traced back to several mythological stories. One popular legend narrates that after defeating the demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra. She warmly welcomed him with sweets, applied a tilak (auspicious mark) on his forehead, and performed aarti (prayer ritual) to protect him from evil. Krishna was deeply moved by her love, and since then, it is believed that the Bhai Dooj ritual blesses brothers with good health and prosperity, courtesy of their sisters’ prayers.
Another story tells of Yama, the god of death, who visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She too performed rituals for him, wishing for his well-being. Pleased by her affection, Yama declared that brothers who are honored by their sisters on this day would have a prosperous and blessed life. Hence, Bhai Dooj is also sometimes called “Yama Dwitiya,” emphasizing the blessings and protection brothers receive through this bond.
Rituals of Bhai Dooj
The rituals of Bhai Dooj are filled with love and devotion. On this day, sisters invite their brothers to their homes and prepare a special plate with tilak, rice, sweets, and diya (lamp). The sister applies a sacred tilak on her brother’s forehead, symbolizing her wishes for his protection and prosperity. She then performs an aarti and prays for his happiness and well-being. In return, the brother presents his sister with gifts and vows to safeguard her, embodying the love and commitment between siblings.
In Maharashtra, the celebration is known as Bhau Beej, where brothers and sisters perform similar rituals, followed by a shared meal. In parts of Nepal, it is called Bhai Tika, with elaborate ceremonies that involve five-colored tilak and garlands. These customs, though varied, all emphasize the bond of love and loyalty.
The essence of Bhai Dooj transcends regional variations, celebrating the beauty of the sibling relationship. This festival is not just a ritualistic observance but a joyful reaffirmation of familial love, unity, and commitment. Brothers and sisters take this opportunity to express gratitude for each other’s presence in their lives, making Bhai Dooj a day of profound familial connection.
