JLF: 5 takeaways from Prasoon Joshi’s session on Transcending Genres

0

Prasoon Joshi in Jaipur Literature Festival addressed a session called Across Genres: Classical, Folk and Popular Music

Prasoon Joshi, poet, songwriter and Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification, explored interrelated genres of Indian music during a session titled Across Genres: Classical, Folk and Popular Music during an insightful conversation with scholar Vidya Shah at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2021.

Let’s discuss the key takeaways from his discussion on significance of understanding, feeling, and getting lost in the beauty of music and art as well as on the present struggles and limitations of a songwriter due to a shrinking lexicon.

“A person who makes art is important, but a seeker of that art is equally important. Art is beyond communication.

These days, we have become too obsessed with the message. Maybe there is no message, and just losing yourself in the moment is all you need,” said the award-winning lyricist.

“I recently said to Gulzar sahab that the usage of beautiful and meaningful words has decreased from his generation to mine.

I have fewer words now to convey my message. During his time, he had more words to describe and convey what he felt because people understood the meaning of those words.”

“No one can lay a singular claim to it. The shine in folk music reflects the collective.”

The finesse of folk music is a work of generations of artists. Many of our traditions are alive due to folk music which explains how there are songs that depict different occasions and values.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan: See how this MP CM celebrates his birthday differently!

0

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan celebrates his birthday on March 5.

MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on March 4, wrote a letter to the people of the state urging them to plant a sapling instead of gifting him garland and bouquet.

In his tweet, CM said that he has planted tree a day before his birthday. “I have planted a sapling on my birthday and appeal you all to plant trees instead of  gifting me garlands and bouquets. There is no need to raise slogans for me, instead, just plant a sapling and my birthday will become meaningful,” he said.

In his letter to people of the state, he said, “Although our government is doing meaningful work, but there has been a feeling in the mind that the birthday should be made purposeful and hence have pledged to plant one plant every day for a year. Our environment is deteriorating due to indiscriminate felling of trees. The surface temperature of the Earth is constantly increasing and it is estimated that by 2050, it will increase by 2 degree Celsius and then the conditions will be such that the existence of human beings and animals on the earth will be difficult.”

It is a matter of pride and happiness that the forest area of the state has increased continuously  and we should attempt at increasing  the forest area more.

I pray that you do not celebrate the joy of this birthday by welcoming me with a bouquet, instead plant a tree. You should plant a tree on any auspicious occasion of your life. There is oxygen if there is a tree, there is life if there is oxygen. Therefore the tree is also life. I will celebrate my birthday by planting trees, he said.

Jaipur Literature Festival: Bill Gates speaks on ‘How to Avoid a Climate Disaster’

0

The Jaipur Literature Festival hosted business magnate, technologist and philanthropist Bill Gates, where he spoke on the perils of climate change in conversation with Alok Sharma, President of the COP26 Climate Conference. The session began with an introduction to Gates’ mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 51 million tons to zero by 2050, and about his perfectly timed book, ‘The Solutions We Have And The Breakthroughs We Need’.

Festival Producer, Sanjoy K. Roy, described the book as a practical guide “to avoid a climate catastrophe, with the help of experts in the field of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science and finance.”

  1. Climate change is too big of a problem: Speaking about US President Biden and his Administration prioritising climate change and enlisting climate activists to help create policies, Gates said climate change is too big of a problem and it cannot be tackled without governments driving this.

2. Younger generation should be credited: Applauding and encouraging the youth on their continued efforts, Bill Gates said, “I think we can give the younger generation credit that in this political round, it [climate] was more discussed, by far, than at any time in our history.”

3. Political parties should prioritise the issue: Speaking about the need for political parties to prioritise this issue, he said “We want climate to be a bi-partisan issue because we’ve got to cap thirty years of progress, not just four years.”

4. Gate’s admiration for Greta: When asked for advice as to how young people can help, he responded, “I am not an expert on advocacy. I have incredible admiration for people like Greta [Thunberg]… We need that attention to intensify and stay very, very high for all thirty years. You know different parties may be in power in different countries and yet, we can’t have them checking out of this cause.”

5. Accelerating innovation: Highlighting the vital and urgent need for innovation in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, he said, “It’s very novel for the world to need innovation by a deadline. Normally we just let innovation go and some areas go better than we expect and some are much harder. And yet, now by 2050, if we don’t get to zero, the temperature rise will be so damaging that life will actually get worse for humans and most of the natural ecosystems. So, you have to think, how can you accelerate innovation?”

6. Gates mentions PM Narendra Modi twice: Gates mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name twice as having strongly supported reduced emissions – he (PM Modi) “actually named this initiative Mission Innovation.”

7. India is pragmatic: Gates explained that “in terms of future emissions and future suffering, India is paradigmatic. If we don’t help them and get them involved, then this whole thing doesn’t go well.” A key point that he emphasised was that “we have to have co-operation, because no matter where the emissions take place, it affects the entire world.”
