Once Rolls Royce was used to pick municipal waste by Alwar King

Rajasthan’s Maharaja from Alwar once used world renowned Rolls Royce to pick up the municipal waste, just to teach the automobile company a lesson that they should respect all human beings.

The Rolls-Royce story associated with Rajasthan is being shared by people across with utmost pride even today.

One day on his trip to London, Maharaja Jai Singh (Alwar king), walking in casual dress on Bond Street, saw a Rolls Royce showroom and went inside to inquire about the price and features of their cars.

The showroom salesmen insulted him and showed him the way out, thinking he was a poor Indian.

The insulted Maharaja Jai Singh returned to his hotel room and asked his servants to call the showroom that the Maharaja of Alwar was interested in purchasing a few cars.

In next few hours, the Maharaja reached the Rolls Royce showroom again but in full royal regalia wearing his royal costume.

This time, the showroom gave him a red carpet welcome and all the salesmen bowed before him with respect

The Maharaja purchased all six cars which were there at the showroom at that time and paid full amount with delivery costs.

On his return to India, Maharaja ordered municipal department to use all six Rolls Royce cars for cleaning and transporting city’s waste.

The news spread like wild fire that the world’s number one Rolls Royce cars were being used for transportation of Alwar city’s waste and the reputation of Rolls Royce Company eventually became a laughing stock

While people in Europe or America boasted that they owned a Rolls Royce, other people used to laugh and say, “Which one? The same that is used in India for carrying the waste of the city?”

After the severe damage to reputation, sales of Rolls Royce cars dropped rapidly and the revenue of  the company showed a decline.

The company owners then sent a telegram to the Maharaja in India offering apologies and requested him to stop transportation of waste in Rolls Royce cars. They also offered him six new cars free of cost.

When Maharaja Jai Singh felt that the Rolls Royce company learnt a lesson, he stopped carrying  municipal waste in those cars.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) recently approved acquisition by Tata Digital Limited of up to 64.3% of the total share capital of Supermarket Grocery Supplies Private Ltd (SGS) and its sole control over Innovative Retail Concepts (IRC), which is the company that runs BigBasket.

EBNW Business Desk

As Tata Sons’ have received approval to acquire a majority stake in Alibaba-backed BigBasket from the Competition Commission of India (CCI), it augments a battle of the giants in the country’s fast-growing online grocery segment.

Tata Sons subsidiary Tata Digital wanted to purchase a 64.3 per cent stake in Supermarket Grocery Supplies, the business-to-business arm of BigBasket. It was through a mix of primary and secondary share purchases.

Supermarket Grocery Supplies is likely to acquire sole control over Innovative Retail Concepts which operates BigBasket’s online retail business. So Tata will get control over both wholesale and retail business units.

It is likely to provide a full exit to two of BigBasket’s biggest investors — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. It holds a 27.58% stake. Actis LLP  is has acquired several portfolios of scandal-hit Abraaj Group, and it owns an 18.05% stake in  is BigBasket. The deal will put Tata in direct competition with Reliance’s JioMart, Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart, apart from Grofers.

Be noted that the online grocery segment is witnessing significant growth as consumers choose to shop from the safety of their homes amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

BigBasket has said that it is currently clocking 23-25% higher sales in April than the previous month. The company reported a 36% growth in revenue to Rs 3,818 crore for the year ended March 31, 2020.

Interesting positive trends

About 47 per cent of start-up founders have started experiencing growth during April 2021.

Almost the same number are expected to follow the same up-going curve in next few months.

Almost 88 per cent of early-stage ventures are looking to raise funds in the next 3-6 months.

It is revealed in a survey undertaken by the early-stage venture investor 100X VC.

IPL 2021 under fire: Donations?

0

IPL 2021, being held in India, is catching attention for many reasons besides cricket these days. Being held amid pandemic, some players have quit halfway.

EBNW Sports Desk

The prestigious Indian Premier league cricket tournament, half way these days, in under fire. The organizers, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) are under pressure to complete the 2021 tournament in face of diverse opinion, nay opposition, from quarters asking for a more-safe playing conditions in face of the pandemic assuming dense proportions in India. Many overseas players did not turn up at start. Some quit half way. More wickets are to fall soon!

Australians Rod Tucker and Paul Reiffel, plus Indian Nitin Menon, have been relieved of umpiring number of games.  Any reason why the  IPL  is continuing while the pandemic runs out of control in the country? Why around 40 Australians are pressing on with playing, coaching, umpiring and commentating? The BCCI’s Hemang Amin stated, “While you are professionals and will play to win, this time you are also playing for something much more important – humanity.”

What about the look? Tens of thousands of Australians are stranded overseas, thousands in India, awaiting flights home. Flights from India to Australia are suspended at least until May 15, which will lengthen the waiting time. Yet at least one Australian cricketer is agitating for Cricket Australia to lay on a charter flight home at the end of the IPL.  No one would wish a longer exile on any Australia abroad, cricketer or non-cricketer. But a charter flight for cricketers would look like privilege.

Be noted: Pat Cummins donated  $US50,000 to the fight against Covid-19. Brett Lee followed suit. These generous gestures are much appreciated. But they raise an awkward question. If individual cricketers can kick in this way, why can’t the game as a whole? If the IPL must proceed, why not donate all prize money to the Covid cause? The question is raised by Greg Baun, writing in The Melbourne Age on 28 April 2021.

His sympathy for Australian players and anger against BCCI is too explicit: “Better still, why not call off the whole vulgar exercise and divert all of Indian cricket’s vast resources to the catastrophe laying on its doorstep? There’s a bit of money kicking around in Indian cricket, you know.  Over to you, the great humanitarians of the BCCI.”
