Blood Moon 2021 on May 26: Here’s all you need to know about Total Lunar Eclipse

0

Blood Moon Day or the Total Lunar Eclipse of the year 2021 will be visible on May 26 when the Moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow

The Blood Moon Day or the Total Lunar Eclipse will be visible on May 26 as the Moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow.

As the event marks the astronomical highlight of 2021, the eclipse will be a combination of a full Moon, a Bloodmoon and a Total Lunar Eclipse.

The Bloodmoon that will be visible on May 26 will be one of the biggest of the year.

Total Lunar Eclipse

A Total Lunar Eclipse comes to fore when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in a line. The Earth comes in between Sun and the Moon during the eclipse, blocking sun rays from reaching the Moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface.

Blood Moon?

When the Earth casts its shadow on the Moon, it is partially visible and can be seen through the naked eye.

As earth’s atmosphere bends sunlight and indirectly lights up the Moon’s surface, the colours with shorter wavelengths get scattered due to the refraction of sunlight and get filtered while the higher wavelength colours like orange and red illuminate the Moon’s surface, giving it a reddish-orange glow. This reddish-orange Moon is known as Blood Moon.

Besides Blood Moon, the total lunar eclipse can also be orange or brown in colour depending on various dust particles and different wavelength colours reaching the moon’s surface.

World Hypertension Day 2021: Let’s know more about the date, history, theme this year and importance of controlling hypertension or high BP during the Covid-19 pandemic and the ways to manage it

World Hypertension Day is observed in May 17 each year.  Reasons for hypertension in young people include high stress levels along with obesity, sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits. Prolonged hypertension, also known as, high blood pressure comes as a major risk factor for many medical conditions including coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, vision loss, etc. Conscious lifestyle changes and medications can lower blood pressure, decreasing the risk of health complications.

World Hypertension Day History and significance

World Hypertension Day, initiated by The World Hypertension League, is observed on May 17 every year.

The initiative was launched on on May 14, 2005 however, the World Hypertension League has been dedicating May 17 of every year as World Hypertension Day since 2006.

Hypertension is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases which include coronary heart disease and stroke. It is also responsible for triggering chronic kidney disease, heart failure, arrhythmia and dementia.

Theme:

The theme for World Hypertension Day for five years from 2013 to 2018 has been ‘Know Your Numbers’ which aimed at increasing high blood pressure awareness in all populations, the theme in 2021 is ‘Measure your blood pressure, control it, live longer!’ to raise awareness especially in low to middle income areas and promote the accurate blood pressure measurement methods.

Importance amid Covid-19:

Some people with hypertension, diabetes and heart disease may develop more severe symptoms and complications once infected with the coronavirus. The pandemic is also leading to an increased prevalence of hypertension within all age groups. This is happening due to increased stress levels, lack of outdoor exercise due to frequent lock downs as well as unhealthy dietary patterns.

Prevention:

  1. Exercise – Active lifestyle can help lower your systolic blood pressure by an average of 4 to 9 mm Hg. Exercise helps you to maintain a healthy weight which in turn helps to control blood pressure.
  2. Diet – Eating a heart-healthy diet is important for managing your blood pressure and reducing your risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke and other diseases.
  3. Continue medication – When somebody is diagnosed to have hypertension (systolic blood pressure 140 or more and/or diastolic blood pressure 90 or more), then in addition to diet and exercise, medicines become a must. Medicines need to be increased step wise to keep the blood pressure within range.
  4. Stop smoking – While smoking is not conclusively proven to cause high blood pressure, each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your blood pressure for many minutes after you finish.
  5. Don’t drink – Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure to unhealthy levels.

Why Israel and Palestine are in war? Know history of israel and palestine conflict

0

Israel and Palestine are in war and Jerusalem forms the main point of contention. In the year 1948, Israel was established as a nation, but was never recognised by the Islamic countries of the Middle East. However, later with much struggle, it was decided that parts of Western Jerusalem would be the right of Israel and parts of East Jerusalem would be Jordan’s right and its army will be stationed there. In this way, Jerusalem was divided but this partition was temporary.

In 1967, Israel fought wars with Syria, Jordan and the Palestinians and captured East Jerusalem and the West Bank. These two areas near Jordan were taken away by Israel and since then, violent confrontation started between Israelis and Palestinians in these areas.

Israel claims that the entire Jerusalem is its capital, while Palestinians consider East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian nation.

America is one among the few countries accepting Israel’s claim on the entire city. In simple words, all this war is about the areas of East Jerusalem.

Why is this fight over East Jerusalem?

The answer brings all three religions Christianity, Islamism and Judaism into picture.

Christianity is associated with this region as it is believed that this is the place where Jesus was crucified on the hill of Calvary. Therefore Christians consider this place.

This place is significant for Muslims too because the Dome of Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque are located here. This mosque is the third holiest site in Islam with Muslims believing that Prophet Muhammad traveled from Mecca to here during the journey and prayed with all Prophet’s spirits. Next to this mosque, the Dome of Rock is the cornerstone where Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad went towards paradise.

The Jews consider Jerusalem as their place because they believe that this was where the whole world was built after laying the foundations and this is the place where Abraham offered his son Isaac.

This means Jerusalem, Christianity, Islam and Judaism are at the center of all three religions and all the disputes also start from here.

Interesting piece of information

Jerusalem, one of the oldest cities in the world, has been attacked 52 times, it has been captured 44 times and the invading army has surrounded the city 23 times.

Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world. The history of this religion is about 3,000 years old. And it is believed that Judaism originated in Jerusalem itself and the founders of this religion were Prophet Abraham. Abraham is also called the messenger of God by Christians and Muslims. And his son’s name was Isaac and a grandson named Jacob.

The other name of Jacob was Israel and that is why the people of Judaism gave their country the name Israel. But people of this religion had to struggle for their own separate country. It is said that the first Jewish state came into existence about 2200 years ago. But in 931 BC, this kingdom began to decline slowly and united Israel was divided into two parts between Israel and Yuda.
