World Wind Day is celebrated with joy and excitement all over the world on June 15, 2021. The day aims at increasing awareness about wind energy and reflects the message how it can change the world for the better. Ahead of World Wind Day, EBNW Story features the World Wind Day 2021 theme, World Wind Day history and its significance. 

World Wind Day history

Global Wind Day is organised jointly by WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the national associations. The first observance of the day was held in the year 2007 to introduce people to wind energy and its benefits through a series of activities. However, till the year 2009, it was not a World Wind Day or Global Wind Day. Since then the day has evolved to become more inclusive and the aim of this day has spread in various countries till now.

Since 2007 the day is celebrated annually.

As far as the World Wind Day 2021 theme is concerned, it has not yet  been announced. Here is a look at the World Wind Day significance.

At a time when the threat of global warming is looming large over the world, it becomes important to use energy forms like wind in an efficient way. 

The globalwindday.org says that wind energy is currently a mature and mainstream technology. It is also one of the fastest-growing industrial sectors in the world with over $100 billion invested in 2015.

Who is Naftali Bennett?

Naftali Bennett is son of American-born parents who speaks perfect English. He is a religious Jew who started life with his parents in Haifa and kept moving between North America and Israel for military service, law school and private sector. He is an ultra-nationalist and & hard-right leader. He served in elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit after which he went to law school at Hebrew University. He co-founded an anti-fraud software company called Cyota in 1999.  Cyota was sold to U.S.-based RSA Security in 2005.

How Bennett entered politics?

Bennett had a bitter experience of Israel’s 2006 war against Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. This incident drove him to politics.

Will Israel’s relation with India change now?

India and Israel share a strong bilateral tie since 1950 with Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru reiterating his position to recognise Israel as a state. Presently, India is the largest buyer of Israeli military equipment while Israel is second-largest defence supplier to India after Russia. India is the third-largest Asian trade partner and tenth-largest trade partner overall of Israel. India’s relationship with Israel has grew during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration even though India abstaining from voting against Israel in UN on several resolutions. It is expected to grow with same pace in new regime as well.

Govt of India approves a policy on declassification of War histories

The policy on declassification of War histories, approved by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Government of India, will allow archiving, declassifying, compiling and publishing war and operations histories.

However, declassification of older wars like of 1962 war is not automatic.

Declassification will be taken up on case-by-case basis by a committee which will be constituted under the new policy.

As per policy, records should ordinarily be declassified in 25 years.

Records which are older than 25 years should be appraised by archival experts and transferred to National Archives of India after histories of war or operations have been compiled.

Will all reports on wars be public?

Committee will take a view on earlier wars and operations. Compiled history on wars and operations will be consumed internally first, within five years. After that, the committee may decide to publicly release whole or parts of it based on the sensitivity of subject.

About Committee to be constituted

As per policy, a committee will be constituted which will be headed by Joint Secretary of MoD.  It will comprise of representatives of Services, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and prominent military historians for compilation of war & operations histories. History Division of the committee will be responsible to coordinate with various departments while compiling, for approval & publishing of war and operations histories.

Background

Proposal of having war histories written with clear cut policy on declassification was recommended by Kargil Review Committee headed by K Subrahmanyam and NN Vohra Committee to analyse lessons learnt and prevent future mistakes.

Jawahar Circle: This garden is considered to be the Asia’s largest circular park, bordered by a rose garden, which is a beauty to behold.

Created by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) in 2009, this park offers a number of paths for jogging and is an ideal place to relax during evening hours.

Kanak Vrindavan: This landscaped garden situated at the foothills of Nahargarh on the way to Amber Fort houses an intricately carved temple, marble columns and lattices, making it an ideal location to spend a day in. Offering a great spot for sightseeing, photography and relaxing, it is also a delight for bird watchers as they can spot a variety of birds here like neel kanth, spotted dove and kingfisher. The garden was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh and is said to be emulated after a mythological garden where Lord Krishna used to play. This was meant as the king’s recreational retreat. One can also find a spiritual spot here where several rivers meet. The water is considered holy here and a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu has been built nearby.

Ram Niwas Garden: This garden, built by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh in 1868, houses the Albert Hall Museum, a zoo, a bird park, the Ravindra Rang Manch theatre, an art gallery and an exhibition ground. People visit here for the garden’s various picnic spots. It also appeals to birdwatchers as one can spot several species here.

Sisodia Rani Palace And Garden: The Sisodia Rani Palace and Garden, located 8 km from Jaipur, was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II for his queen Sisodia, a princess of Udaipur, in 1728. He gifted the garden to the queen to spend her idol time in. Laid out in a blend of Mughal and Indian styles, it is a multi-tiered garden with built-in waterways, fountains and pavilions. A natural spring and small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman and Lord Vishnu are also worth visiting here. The garden overlooks the palace that houses paintings of hunting scenes and scenes from the legends of Lord Krishna and Radha.

As per Dr Suresh Mohankumar, author of the study, “Nature’s oldest pharmacy is a treasure of potential novel drugs. Hence, we questioned if any of these compounds could assist us in battling the Covid-19 pandemic?”

El Salvador is the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender

El Salvador is the first country of the world to formally adopt bitcoin as legal tender.  

The proposal to legalise cryptocurrency was put forward by President Nayib Bukele which was later approved by Congress.

Despite there being concerns regarding potential impact of legalising cryptocurrency on El Salvador’s program of $1 billion with International Monetary Fund, the proposal was passed with majority of 62 out of 84 possible votes.

Bitcoin was approved considering its potential to help Salvadorans living abroad to send remittances back home. U.S. dollar will also continue as legal tender in country

Blue Origin : The very first seat on New Shepard sells for $28 million

Blue Origin, a company of Amazen CEO Jeff Bezos concluded the online auction for the very first seat on New Shepard, to travel to space on July 20, with a winning bid of $28 million and the name of the auction winner will be released in the weeks following the auction’s conclusion. 

Then, the fourth and final crew member will be announced.

Nearly 7,600 people registered to bid from 159 countries.

The winning bidder will fly to space on New Shepard’s first human flight on July 20, and will join Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos and his brother Mark.

The first passenger flight of Blue Origin will take off from the launch site Texas on July 20. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said last week that he would fly to space with his brother Mark in this first flight.

Blue Origin is the company of Jeff Bezos. Jeff Bezos is going to step down as the CEO of Amazon on July 5. After him, Andy Jesse will become the CEO of Amazon.

The winning bid amount will be donated to Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future, whose mission is to inspire future generations to pursue careers in STEM and to help invent the future of life in space.

On July 20th, New Shepard will fly its first astronaut crew to space and hence it offered one seat on this first flight to the winning bidder of Blue Origin’s online auction.

History

On this day 60 years ago, Alan Shepard made history by becoming the first American to fly to space. In the decades since, fewer than 600 astronauts have been to space above the Kármán Line to see the borderless Earth and the thin limb of our atmosphere. They all say this experience changes them.   

The company named its launch vehicle after Alan Shepard to honor his historic flight. New Shepard has flown 15 successful consecutive missions to space and back above the Kármán Line through a meticulous and incremental flight program to test its multiple redundant safety systems. Now, it’s time for astronauts to climb onboard.

World Blood Donor Day History 

The World Blood Donor Day was first organised by the World Health Organisation in collaboration with Red Cross on June 14, 2005, to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. Since then, many countries picked up the concept to spread awareness about the life-saving importance of donating blood.

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated to spread awareness of voluntary blood donation. During these COVID times, people can donate blood at their nearest blood banks if they are fit to do so. India experiences the highest shortage of blood in the world. As per a report published in The Lancet, India falls short of 41 million units of blood annually. So to motivate the free and voluntary blood donors, World Blood Donor Day is an important campaign initiated by WHO. 

India becomes the fourth largest forex reserves holder after Russia

India’s forex reserves have crossed $600 mark for the first time as on June 4, it stood at $605 billion. With this, India equals Russia as the fourth largest reserve holder worldwide.

India’s forex reserve was $605.008 billion while for Russia it was $605.2 billion.

It took almost a year for reserves to rise by $100 billion.

Huge forex reserves have improved India’s import cover substantially.

By December 2020, foreign exchange reserves cover of imports increased to 18.6 months.

Foreign exchange or Forex reserves

Forex are assets on reserves which are held by central bank in foreign currencies. It includes bonds, treasury bills and other government securities. Most of the foreign exchange reserves are held in U.S. dollars. These reserves serve several purposes and ensure that central bank has backup funds in case national currency rapidly becomes insolvent or devaluate. India’s Forex Reserves include- Gold, Foreign Currency Assets, Special Drawing Rights and Reserve position with International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Foreign Currency Assets

Assets, valued on the basis of currency other than own currency of any country, are called as foreign currency assets. It is the largest component of forex reserve and is expressed in dollar terms.

Special Drawing Rights

These international reserve assets are created by International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1969 which are neither a currency nor a claim on IMF, but a potential claim on freely usable currencies of members of IMF.

Himachal Pradesh: No RT-PCR test required to travel here!

Travelling to Himachal Pradesh will no longer require an RT-PCR test, says the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet adding that corona curfew however shall remain from 5 pm to 5 am.

The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has announced that there would be no requirement of RT-PCR tests for entering HImachal Pradesh. However, the Corona curfew will remain in place from 5 PM to 5 AM.

Meanwhile, a decision was also taken to increase shop timings. They will be allowed to remain open from 9 AM to 5 PM from June 14. However, shops will remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The cabinet has also decided to lift Section 144, and allowed the intrastate public transport with 50 percent occupancy; section 144 has also been lifted. As such, this will facilitate travel of the local population, as well as of travellers.
