Cognitive Skills: See how it plays a vital role in academic performance!

0

Cognitive skills occupy a very vital role in the overall development of an individual. We use these skills while solving problems, remembering tasks, and making decisions; and they affect the quality of our learning and performance. This article, written by Kamlesh D Patel, Guide, Heartfulness Institute, will shed light on cognitive skills and their relevance in the learning process. Cognitive skills include some of the core functions of the brain such as thinking, reading, learning, retaining information, and paying attention.

One of the basic and the most important cognitive skills is attention. Attention enables us to process the necessary information from our environment. We usually process such information through our senses, stored memories, and our other cognitive processes.

Meanwhile, a lack of attention inhibits and reduces our information processing systems. This means that we

become distracted and struggle to remember and reproduce what we have been taught. We can see this when people try to multitask; for instance, trying to watch a programme and write an email or message. It is difficult to manage both tasks simultaneously and competently. In reality, it is our grab interest that keeps our attention glued.

Memory: Another cognitive skill of importance

Memory is another cognitive skill which allows us to recall information. For example, a student remembers the main points of last week’s science class thanks to this important cognitive skill, in this case, their long-term memory. The proviso is that the student paid attention to the information in the first place!

This example also shows that cognitive skills are inter-related. Our long-term memory is only effective if we are paying attention to a subject, and we store the information in our short-term memory banks, also known as our working memory. The information stored in our working memory, once contemplated for a while, slips into our long-term memory.

However, an inability to pay attention to, and to retain, information in the classroom can lead to longer term challenges in both the classroom, and our lives. Learning to stack the ques of objects to be memorised greatly helps in recalling.

Logic, reasoning and auditory processing significant too!

Other cognitive skills include logic and reasoning, auditory and visual processing, and processing speed. Logic and reasoning help us to solve problems and generate ideas. In classroom learning especially, students need logic and reasoning to solve, plan, analyse, understand, and deduce necessary information.

Auditory processing is used by our brains to understand information which we hear and listen to. We blend, analyse, and segment, sounds to process this information. This cognitive skill helps students to listen to the teacher in a classroom and interpret the information received.

As the name suggests, visual processing helps us interpret images effectively. Strong visual processing skills allow us, amongst other things, to formulate designs and make sense of graphs and tables. Weaker visual processing skills may lead to difficulties in understanding what we have seen or read; and they produce challenges in terms of recalling information, following directions, reading maps, and doing mathematical word-problems.

Processing speed helps us to perform tasks quickly and accurately. Inefficient processing speed means that we take a long time to complete tasks for school or work and have difficulties in following instructions. Processing becomes faster with right understanding of the subject matter. Even the games not well understood cannot be played out even for fun.

Stay ahead, another lesson to learn

Classroom learning can be enhanced further if the student is exposed to the lesson that is being taught. For example, if the lesson 5 is planned for Friday, students could grasp more on the lesson if they had familiarised or worked on that lesson at home on their own few days earlier. Idea is to remain ahead of the class.

Now that we understand more about these cognitive skills and their functions, it is easier to understand their importance in a classroom setting. Cognitive skills are the mental capabilities which are essential for students to be able to learn effectively. Learning processes in schools require students to read, write, think, analyse, remember, solve, and understand the topics. Each of these cognitive skills should come together, and complement each other, to function effectively. Such skills determine the success of learning outcomes. It is also helpful to understand that most learning challenges are caused by inadequate cognitive skills, and worth asking – how are we enabling our future leaders to grow? What tools can we provide for their growth in a nurturing environment?

What schools should do to develop students’ cognitive skills

Schools can start focusing on developing student’s cognitive skills through multiple approaches and age-appropriate training. Physical activities and brain exercises have a positive effect on brain health and cognition. Research has established that certain chemicals (like endorphins) released during exercise stimulate neural connections and brain growth.

In addition, teachers can try to enhance children’s creativity by exposing them to art, music, and crafts. Nurturing a child’s curiosity and engaging them in brain-stimulating activities like jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, or crosswords can significantly influence logic and reasoning skills. Another important activity is the interaction of the students with the natural world around them. To be in tune with nature sets a natural course for life in general.

Space Tourism: Virgin Galactic Space Flight soars into space, ticket for spaceplane is $250,000 per ticket for next two spaceplane flights in 2022

0

Space Tourism was seen as a reality on Monday when Virgin Galactic Space Flight soared into space.

British billionaire Richard Branson soared 50 miles above New Mexico desert on his Virgin Galactic rocket plane and made safe return in vehicle’s first fully crewed test flight to space which can be termed as the first case of space tourism. Virgin has planned at least two further test flights of spaceplane before starting its regular commercial operation in 2022.

Ticket for spaceplane has been priced at around $250,000 per ticket.

Space Tourism: Highlights

  • This Virgin Galactic Space Flight is a milestone for a venture started by Richard Branson around 17 years ago.
  • Branson was one amongst six Virgin Galactic Holding Inc employees who strapped in for space ride.
  • This mission has been termed as precursor to new era of space tourism, which was founded by company in 2004.
  • Its commercial operations would begin in 2022.
  • This launch of VSS Unity passenger rocket plane marks company’s 22nd test flight of its SpaceShipTwo system. It is the fourth crewed mission beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Virgin Galactic and its details…

Virgin Galactic, a British-American spaceflight company, operates in United States and has been founded by Richard Branson. His Virgin Group has retained a 24% stake in it. Virgin Galactic’s suborbital spacecraft are air launched from a carrier airplane called White Knight Two. Virgin Galactic did early work on satellite launch development of LauncherOne in 2017.

About recent flight

Space flight reached at a height of about 46,000 feet, where Unity was released from mothership and fell away when crew ignited vehicle’s rocket. Spaceplane’s contrail was seen from ground when it soared through upper atmosphere. At the apex of climb, the rocket shut down while the crew experienced few minutes of microgravity before spaceplane shifted into re-entry mode.  Virgin has planned at least two further test flights of spaceplane before starting its regular commercial operation in 2022.

Ticket for spaceplane has been priced at around $250,000 per ticket.

Puri Rath Yatra 2021 date, history, significance, rituals and timings

Puri Rath Yatra 2021 started on July 12 and is taking place in a small radius around Puri. The Supreme Court said that Jagannath Rath Yatra 2021 shall take place exclusively in Puri and prohibited it to be taken out in the entire state of Odisha. Let’s know the date, history, significance, and timings about the yatra.

The Yatra is taking place exclusively in Puri as the Supreme Court has prohibited the Rath Yatra in the whole state of Odisha in the wake of the Delta Plus form of COVID-19 and the likelihood of a third wave.

Puri Rath Yatra 2021: Date

The Yatra generally begins on the Dwitiya Tithi (second day), Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon) in the Hindu month of Aashadha. As per the Gregorian calendar, the event is presently held in June or July.

The Jagannath Temple is one of Hinduism’s four most important pilgrimages. Ratha Yatra started on Monday, July 12, 2021, this year.

History and Significance

The Jagannath Puri shrine was erected in the 12th century where Shri Jagannathji, Balabhadraji, and Subhadraji are revered. The current temple was built by King Chodagan Dev in the Kalinga style. During the Rath Yatra, all three deities including Shri Jagannathji, Balabhadraji, and Subhadraji ride in separate chariots to their aunt’s residence, the Gundicha temple, which is situated three kilometres from the Puri temple.  After an eight-day visit, they return to the Puri temple.

Each year, the Yatra starts on Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month and concludes 8 days later on Dashami Tithi with the homecoming of Shri Jagannathji, Balabhadraji, and Subhadraji.

Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. “How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense”, he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn’t get into that position. However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was.

NASA’s ICESat-2 finds Antarctic Meltwater Lakes

0

The American Space Agency, NASA’s ICESat-2 discovered the Antarctic Meltwater Lakes recently which have the ability to fill and drain.

Glaciologist Helen Amanda Fricker in 2007 made an astonishing discovery that, a whole hidden network of interconnected lake is found beneath thick Antarctic ice-shelves.

These lakes actively fill and drain, she said, adding, “Presence of meltwater beneath ice sheets was known, but such network of an active water system was a breakthrough.”

She had used data from NASA’s ICESat. This satellite used laser pulses to measure elevation data for ice, clouds & land.

How ICESat-2 was used to map lakes?

ICESat-2 is the successor of ICESat. It was launched by NASA in 2018. This new satellite gathers elevation data with higher precision. Using data from ICESat 2, Fricker discovered two new subglacial meltwater lakes under glacial ice of Antarctica. Network of Lakes were mapped high precision.

Significance of the mapping

These maps will help scientists understand water system in Antarctica. They can figure out how these glacial lakes contribute to ocean water. Using critical measurements, scientists will explain & predict appearance & disappearance of Antarctic lakes. For instance, an enormous lake had disappeared in just three days in Amery Ice shelves of Antarctica. So, scientists can calculate how this is caused by global warming and how these lakes will affect movement of Antarctic glaciers.

ICESat-2

It stands for “Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite”. It is a part of NASA’s Earth Observing System for measuring ice sheet elevation and sea ice thickness and also measures land topography, vegetation characteristics, and clouds.  This mission was launched on September 15, 2018 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Rajasthan to develop Tiger Corridor connecting Three Tiger Reserves

0

Rajasthan government has planned to develop a tiger corridor connecting Ranthambore tiger reserve, Ramgarh Vishdhari tiger reserve and Mukundra tiger reserve

About new Ramgarh Vishdhari sanctuary

  • Centre government have its nod for creation of Ramgarh Vishdhari sanctuary, recently.
  • This sanctuary will link Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Northeast side and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve on southern side.
  • Proposed site for the sanctuary is in Bundi District of Rajasthan. It will connect Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Sawai Madhopur district and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve in Kota district.

Proposed Tiger Corridor

A tiger corridor will be developed by relocating eight villages. It will be a functional corridor to deal with issue of overpopulation of tigers which Ranthambore tiger reserve is facing currently. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve has a population of above 65 tigers currently. On the other hand, Mukundra reserve is left with just one Tiger. Thus, this tiger corridor was proposed to balance the population distribution.

About Ranthambore Tiger Reserve

This reserve is located at the junction of Aravali and Vindhya hill ranges. It comprises of Ranthambore National Park, Sawai Mansingh sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuaries. Vegetation of the reserve includes grasslands on plateaus while dense forests along seasonal streams. Typically, tropical dry deciduous forest is found here. Common tree species is ‘dhak’ (Butea monsoperma), that is capable of withstanding long periods of drought. This tree is also called as ‘Flame of forest’. It is one of many flowering plants adding colours to dry summer in the reserve. It is rich in wildlife with tigers at apex of food chain. It is also a home to leopards.

About Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve

This reserve was established in 2013. It is located between two parallel mountains, Mukundra and Gagrola. It runs for a length of about 80 km.

Study: Over 7 lakh deaths per year in India linked to abnormal temperatures

0

The Lancet Planetary Health Journal study says that about 740,000 access deaths in India annually are linked to abnormal hot and cold temperatures due to climate change.

Highlights

  • Study conducted:  An international team, led by researchers at Monash University in Australia conducted the study.
  • Study highlights: Deaths related to hot temperatures has increased in all regions from 2000 to 2019. It indicates, global warming due to climate change will further increase the mortality figure in future.
  • Mortality and temperature data: Studied by team worldwide from 2000 to 2019, this period accounted for an increase in temperature by 0.26 degrees Celsius per decade.

Key findings of study

  • As per the Lancet journal, more than five million extra deaths in a year can be linked to non-optimal temperatures, globally.
  • Number of deaths per year in India is linked with abnormal cold temperatures is 655,400.
  • Number of deaths in India linked with high temperatures is 83,700.
  • It underlines, 9.43 per cent of global deaths can be linked to cold and hot temperatures. It will account for 74 excess deaths for every 100,000 people. Most of the deaths will be caused by cold exposure.
  • It further highlights, Global warming may “slightly reduce the number of temperature-related deaths, because of lessening in cold-related mortality,”. However, mortality burden is going to increase in long-term because of climate change.
  • There are geographic differences in impact of non-optimal temperatures on mortality. Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa are having highest heat and cold-related excess death rates.
  • Cold-related death has decreased 0.51 per cent from 2000 to 2019, while heat-related death increased 0.21 per cent. Thus, net mortality has decreased due to cold and hot temperatures.

COVID-19: Deaths from hunger outpace SARS-CoV-2 virus

0

The Oxfam report says that ever since Covid-19 Pandemic has started, deaths from hunger have been outpacing the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Also, the global military spending has increased by $51 billion, says Oxfam report during pandemic times. This amount exceeds by at least six times what  the UN needs to stop hunger.

So let’s discuss the key points of Oxfam’s Hunger Virus:

  • Ongoing Covid-19 pandemic along with the economic disruptions of the pandemic besides, escalating climate crisis have deepened poverty and catastrophic food insecurity across the hunger hotspots of the world.
  • This has also led to the established strongholds in new epicentres of hunger.
  • Situation could turn worst, unless governments urgently tackle food insecurity and its root causes.
  • As per report, 11 people are likely dying every minute from acute hunger because of three Cs: conflict, Covid-19, and climate crisis. 3 Cs have pushed more than 520,000 people to brink of starvation.
  • This rate of hunger related rate outpaces the covid-19 pandemic mortality rate, which is 7 people per minute.
  • It highlights, 155 million people across the world are now living in crisis levels of food insecurity or worse. It has increased by 20 million as compared to 2020.
  • Two third of the 155 million people face hunger because their country is in military conflict.

Way forward

Governments must provide funding to response to hunger and social protection programs to save lives, rather than striking arms deals that lead to conflict, war and hunger.
