National Parents’ Day: History

The US President Bill Clinton in 1994 signed a law after which a resolution was adopted by the US Congress to establish the fourth Sunday of every July as Parents’ Day. This day is quite similar to Mother’s Day and Father’s day. The resolution mentioned that Parents’ Day has been established for “recognising, uplifting and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children”.

Mirabai Chanu: She travelled 20 km each day to her training centre in Manipur!

Mirabai Chanu is a weightlifter from Manipur state of India, a Padma Shri who created history after winning India’s first medal of the Tokyo Olympics when she clinched silver in women’s 49kg weightlifting event on Saturday. Here are some unknown facts regarding her family, her struggle, her parents struggle which helped her to emerge stronger in the run to Olympics:

Mirabai Chanu used to travel 20 kilometre each day from her house in Nongpok Kakching to training centre either on tuk-tuk, bicycle or ride a truck while crossing straw-strewn fields and fish farms to reach Imphal.

Chanu won many World Championships and multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and was also awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award by the Government of India in 2018.

Her father, Saikhom Kriti Singh worked in the Public Works Department. With six children to raise. his salary was just about enough for hand-to-mouth existence.

Mirabai was 12 when she first visited the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Imphal at the Khuman Lampak Stadium. While she wanted options for archery training but could not find any on the said day.

Incidentally, she saw a few clips of Kunjarani Devi, who won the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold in weightlifting, and then visited the SAI centre again.

Next, Mirabai trained at Chanu’s centre for four years where she would daily traverse 20-odd km between her home and Imphal. Her dreams were realised when she made the cut for Rio 2016. However, things didn’t go as planned for she failed to lift the weight in her designated three attempts in clean and jerk section.

But she continued with her efforts and hence clinched a medal at Olympics in Tokyo in 2021.

Rajsamand MP, Diya Kumari met the Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, G. Kishan Reddy and put forth the demand for restoration work of Meera Bai Memorial and Meera Mahal in Merta as well as the approval of Maharana Kumbha Marg Memorial. She also proposed to the Minister the development of a Tourism Circuit consisting of all historical sites related to Maharana Pratap.

During the meeting, the MP said that modern light and sound shows and other tourism activities should be increased in Haldighati and Kumbhalgarh fort. She further suggested that the beautification of streets of various folk artistes located around the Nathdwara Shrinathji temple should be undertaken to attract tourists. This will also increase the employment opportunities of folk artistes. This work of beautification should be done under the Krishna circuit, added Diya Kumari.

While inspecting the documents submitted by the MP in this regard, the Union Tourism Minister G. Kishan Reddy said that all the places associated with Shrinathji, Meera Nagri and Maharana Pratap are important centers of faith and worship. The government will try to develop it holistically so that the avenues of employment can also be opened up

World’s first 3D-printed steel bridge opened in Amsterdam

World’s first 3D-printed steel pedestrian bridge was unveiled in Amsterdam on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal. The opening ceremony of this bridge was attended by the Queen of the Netherlands, Máxima.

The 3D printed steel bridge is made of 6-ton stainless steel structure. Here comes its unique aspects:

The 3D-printed steel bridge features

  1. The length of the bridge stretches to nearly 40 feet.
  2. The bridge is a 6-ton stainless steel structure.
  3. This bridge is constructed by MX3D an Amsterdam based 3D metal printing company.
  4. The entire printing process took just six months as it was made with the help of four robots.
  5. The bridge is designed by the Joris Laarman Lab and was first unveiled during the Dutch Design Week in the year 2018.
  6. There were plans to install the structure in early 2020 after several load-testing rounds were carried out in 2019. However, the ongoing site preparation work at the canal delayed the bridge’s installation.

Tenure of the bridge

The stainless steel structure is named the MX3D Smart Bridge and it will remain in place for minimum of two years while the previous footbridge which was spread over the canal undergoes renovation. During its two-year tenure, this bridge will act as a living laboratory and its performance will be analyzed and monitored in real time by researchers from the Alan Turing Institute’s Data-Centric Engineering Programme, Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge.

  3. Academic Wing of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts
  4. National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology.
  5. School of Archival Studies.

They will form the various schools of Indian Institute of Heritage.

Olympics 2032 to be held in Australia’s Brisbane

Olympics 2032 and Paralympics will be held in Australia’s Brisbane as the executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the country for the same

  • Brisbane is the third Australian city to host the Games after Sydney in 2000 and Melbourne in 1956.
  • The city’s selection means Australia becomes the second country after the United States, to stage summer Olympic Games in three different cities.
  • Brisbane in 1992 had tried to hot the Olympics but it was awarded to Barcelona.
  • Brisbane’s bid to host the games was repeatedly praised by IOC due to certain favourable factors which include high level support from all government and the private levels, existing venues percentage, favourable weather, experience in organising major events, etc.
  • Brisbane also hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
  • The Australian and the Queensland government will split the cost in a 50:50 ratio.

Host Selection Process

Several countries and their cities had expressed interest in staging the 2032 summer Olympics. They are:

  • Indonesia
  • Budapest (Capital of Hungary)
  • China
  • Doha (Qatar)
  • Ruhr valley region (Germany)

In a new process which the IOC has adopted the cities are not pit against each other against each other.. Unlike the past where the interested cities were selected on the basis of vote, in the new method IOC picks a preferred host city after conducting talks with all the interested cities and then the preferred city are put to vote at its session.

Starting this week, Tokyo is hosting 2020 Olympics; Paris will host the 2024 Games and the 2028 Summer Olympics will be hosted by Los Angeles.

Jeff Bezos & crew return to Earth with historic first human flight to space

Jeff Bezos, the Billionaire, rocketed into space on the first crewed flight of the New Shepard spacecraft built by his company Blue Origin.

Bezos was accompanied by his brother Mark Bezos, 82-year-old pioneer of the space race Wally Funk and 18-year-old student Oliver Daemen of the Netherlands. The launch took place from Bezos’ private launch site near Van Horn, Texas, and the flight lasted about 10 minutes.
