BS Bommai: Karnataka new CM once worked with TATA Motors!

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai anointed as new Chief Minister of Karnataka, is a graduate in mechanical engineering who worked as engineering for three years with Tata Motors before turning up as an entrepreneur.

An MLA from Haveri district in central Karnataka, he hails from the Lingayat community.and is the son of the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, SR Bommai. He served many pivotal portfolios in the state government.

Born on January 28, 1960, he started his political career with the Janata Dal and was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council twice. 

Bommai has been a close confidant of former CM BR Yediyurappa and has risen in the party ranks to last helm of the state’s Home Ministry and, earlier, the Water Resources Ministry.

A mechanical engineer by training, he worked for Tata Motors in Pune for three years before turning entrepreneur.

Harappan city of Dholavira situated in Gujarat’s Kachchh district is now UNESCO’S World Heritage Site. Also known as Kotada Timba, the site is one amongst the most prominent sites of the Harappan civilizations, It probably has the world’s oldest signboards in the form of prescriptions excavated in the form of stone inscriptions.

Dholavira: An Archeaological site which lives up the historical era

Dholavira, an archaeological site at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kachchh District, derives its name from a modern-day village one kilometre south of it which is situated 165 km from Radhanpur. Also known locally with the name of Kotada timba, the site contains ruins of an ancient Indus Valley Civilization/Harappan city. Dholavira’s is located on the Tropic of Cancer.

The 120 acres quadrangular city situated between two seasonal streams, the Mansar in the north and Manhar in the south was occupied from c.2650 BCE, which started declining slowly after about 2100 BCE. It was briefly abandoned then reoccupied until c.1450 BCE.

What is Dholavira?

Dholavira is one of the five largest Harappan sites and most prominent archaeological sites in India which belongs to the Indus Valley Civilization and is considered as having been the grandest and richest of cities of its time.

Being one of the two largest Harappan sites in India and the fifth-largest in the subcontinent, it passed through Harappan culture’s different states from circa 2900 BC to 1500 BC, while most others saw only the early or late stages.

Dholavira is divided into different parts which includes Raj Mahal of the Raja / Ruler, who is at the height, Habitat of other officers, which also had a protective wall and had two to five rooms. Also, a big factory of making pearls has been found in this town. Further, copper distilleries were found in fossils found here.

Archeological Survey of India (ASI) unearthed the site in 1967, but it has been systematically excavated only since 1990..

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam made a very humble beginnings, became a scientist and then rose to become the President of India. 

India became a nuclear power after the nuclear tests were done under the supervision of Dr Kalam during July 1992 to December 1999.

Leading India’s two major science research organisations – Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is credited with pioneering work in the development and operationalisation of ‘Indigenous Guided Missiles’ – AGNI and PRITHVI and hence was fondly called as the ‘Missile Man of India’.

Working for over 10 years as the project director for the development of the indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle at ISRO,

Dr Kalam directed projects for the development of India’s ballistic missiles and headed the projects Devil and Valiant, for developing  ballistic missiles using the technology behind the launch of successful SLV programme.

He later wrote a book ‘Wings of Fire’ which was a big hit and hence was translated into 13 languages including Chinese and French

A 13-year-old Japanese skateboarder Momiji Nishiya won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and became one of the youngest gold medalists ever at the Olympic Games. Nishiya won the gold on 26th July, 2021 in the women’s street competition which debuted for the first time in Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Ramappa Temple from Telangana gets listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ramappa Temple also called as the Ramalingeswara (Lord Siva) temple, situated 77 km from Warangal in Telangana state of India is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An inscription in the temple dates it to the year 1213 CE. This is perhaps the only temple in the world to be named after the craftsman who built it.

The Ramappa temple is basically a Sivalayam, where Lord Ramalingeswara is worshipped.

Once upon a time, Marco Polo, renowned explorer and writer visited this place and reportedly called the temple as “the brightest star in the galaxy of temples”.[

Ramappa Temple stands on a 6 ft high star-shaped platform and is named after the sculptor Ramappa, who built it. This is perhaps the only temple in India to be named after a craftsman who built it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all on the occasion and said that the temple showcases the outstanding craftsmanship of great Kakatiya dynasty. “I would urge you all to visit this majestic Temple complex and get a first-hand experience of it’s grandness,” he said.
