January 10 is observed every year as World Hindi Day to help encourage and promote Hindi as an International language across the globe.

World Hindi Day is different from Hindi Diwas:

World Hindi Day is often confused with Hindi Diwas which is celebrated on 14 September, but Hindi Diwas is celebrated every to commemorate the declaration of the Hindi Language as one of the official languages of the Union government of India where World Hindi Day is celebrated to promote Hindi as an language around the world.

History :

The first-ever World Hindi Conference took place in Maharashtra’s Nagpur on January 10, 1975. The conference was initiated by the 3rd Prime Minister on India ,Indira Gandhi and saw participation from a total of 30 countries and was attended by 122 delegates.

In 2006 first World Hindi Day was celebrated, when the former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh declared that January 10 will be observed as World Hindi Day every year. This was also the first time that the ministry of external affairs started celebrating the day abroad.

Significance:

World Hindi Day is celebrated every year on 10 January to commemorate the anniversary of first World Hindi Conference which was organized on 10 January 1975 in Nagpur.

This day is observed because Hindi is one of the most spoken languages ​​in the world. Hindi is the fourth most spoken language globally after English, Spanish and Mandarin, and is spoken by 366 million people across the world. World Hindi day promote Hindi as an language at global level and also emphasizes creating a passion for the language.

Ghosha: There are two entire hymns written in the tenth book, each containing 14 verses, which have been assigned to her name.

Lopamudra: The Rig Veda (‘Royal Knowledge’) narrates a long conversation between the sage Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra which speaks about the great intelligence and goodness of the latter.

She wrote a hymn which was an impassioned plea for her husband’s attention and love. Agasthya realised his duties after reading the hymn and fulfilled his duties towards family.

Maitreyi: The Rig Veda accommodates around one thousand hymns, out of which about 10 are accredited to Maitreyi, who has been the woman seer, and philosopher.

Gargi: Gargi has been known as the Vedic prophetess and daughter of sage Vachaknu, who composed many hymns that questioned the origin of all existence.

Dada Bhai Naoroji presided over the INC session at Calcutta in 1906 in which a resolution supporting programme of swadeshi, boycott, and national education was passed.

  1. It tried to effect conciliation between the Moderates and Extremists. Dadabahi Naroji’s address formed a remarkable departure from the conventional type of Congress addresses. Here he sponsored the new programme of the Congress which had so far been advocated by the extremists.
  2. Naroji said, “We want self-government or Calcutta Session (1906) like that of the United Kingdom or dominions.”
  3. The Swadeshi and the Boycott were accorded full support by the Congress.

Pangong Lake in Ladakh: Know why this water body is making news since last two years

Pangkok Lake situated in Ladakh has been making news since last two years for different reasons. Akanksha reports

A satellite imagery expert took few pictures of under construction bridge across Pangong in area of Eastern Ladakh which is reportedly occupied illegally by China around 60 years ago. 

Ministry of External Affairs described it as a ridiculous exercise to support untenable territorial. India came down strongly on China for building this bridge. “Regarding reports of a bridge being made by the Chinese side on Pangong Lake, the government has been monitoring this activity closely. This bridge is being constructed in areas that have been under illegal occupation by China for around 60 years now,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

The bridge is being built across a part of the lake that falls within Chinese territory, but it connects both banks and gives China the ability to move soldiers and heavy weaponry into India at pace.

Pangong Tso lake in Eastern Ladakh has usually been in the news from last 2 years of India China dispute.

Brief Synthesis of Pangong Lake

Pangong Tso is one the most famous lake in Ladakh. Pangong is Tibetan word which means high grassland. Situated at a height of a more than 14,000 ft in Ladakh in Himalayas, this lake is narrow and deep.
The western end of Tso lies 54 km to the southeast of Leh. The 135 km-long lake sprawls over 604 sq km in the shape of a boomerang, and is 6 km wide at its broadest point.

Since many years ,Chinese have built roads along with the banks of Pangong. In 1999, during Kargil war, China took the opportunity to build 5 km of road inside Indian territory along the lake’s bank. The 1999 road added to the extensive network of roads built by the Chinese in the area, which connect with each other and to  Karakoram Highway.
From one of these roads, Chinese positions physically overlook Indian positions on the northern tip of the Pangong Tso lake.
