Igniting Minds Nationwide: National Science Day 2026 Celebrates Women in Science

0

Today, 28 February 2026, India observes National Science Day, a nationwide celebration dedicated to the spirit of scientific inquiry, innovation and education. The day honours a landmark moment in scientific history- the discovery of the Raman Effect by eminent Indian physicist C. V. Raman on this date in 1928, a breakthrough that earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 and placed Indian science on the global map.

Instituted by the Government of India in 1986 and first celebrated in 1987, National Science Day has since become a vibrant tribute to scientific temper, rational thinking and research culture across the country’s educational ecosystem.

2026 Theme: “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat”
The official theme for this year’s celebrations, “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat,” has been announced by the Department of Science and Technology, under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The theme recognises the critical role of women researchers, innovators and educators in shaping India’s scientific growth and driving the nation towards a developed (Viksit) Bharat. It emphasises inclusion, gender equity in STEM fields, and the transformative impact of women’s contributions to research, technology and innovation.
In his address, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the theme’s importance in encouraging wider participation of girls and women in scientific careers and leadership, underscoring that inclusive innovation is vital to India’s progress.

How the Day is Being Celebrated

Across the country, schools, colleges, universities, research institutes and science centres have organised a rich variety of activities to engage students and the public with science:

  • National-level events at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, include special lectures, panel discussions and awards that showcase contributions of women scientists.
  • At Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune, a full-day science festival features public science shows, exhibitions, quizzes, interactive experiments and talks by distinguished researchers.
  • Regional celebrations- from Andhra Loyola College’s optics demonstrations to NITK Surathkal’s science exhibitions and competitions, bring scientific exploration to local students and communities.
  • In Shillong, students participated in STEM competitions and model exhibitions under the national theme, reinforcing science outreach in Northeast India.

Elsewhere, institutions are promoting hands-on activities, astronomy sessions, public lectures, poster contests, debates and science quizzes that inspire curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving.

At a time when innovation, research and technology are central to national development, National Science Day serves a dual purpose: it celebrates India’s scientific heritage and encourages a scientific mindset among future generations. By honouring historic discoveries and spotlighting women’s contributions, the 2026 observance reinforces that science belongs to everyone and that diverse minds are key to India’s journey towards a prosperous, knowledge-driven future.
This National Science Day is not just a remembrance of the past, it’s a call to action for a more inclusive, innovative and inquiry-led society.

Beyond Colours: The Divine Symphony of Holi in Nathdwara

0

When spring arrives in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, Holi isn’t confined to just one vibrant day of splashes and laughter- it unfolds as a divine, joyous journey that blends sacred rituals, age-old traditions, folk music and deep devotion in a way unlike anywhere else in India.

In Nathdwara, Holi is celebrated differently at the Shrinathji Temple, the heart of the town and one of the most revered centers of the Pushti Marg sect. Here, Holi is not merely about revelry; it’s about sharing the eternal play of Lord Krishna with his devotees.

Unlike the usual one-day festival, the celebrations here begin weeks before Holi, often as early as Basant Panchami, marking the onset of spring. For about 40 days, priests and devotees gradually adorn Lord Shrinathji’s pristine white attire with streaks and patterns of abir, gulal and kesudo- traditional powders of white, pink and orange, until by the time the grand festival arrives, the deity is a tapestry of vivid hues. This slow, artistic colouring symbolizes the joyful anticipation of Krishna’s legendary playful colours.

A local resident, Aishwarya Bhatia, perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: “Holi Celebration in Nathdwara isn’t just one day — it’s like a long, divine play that unfolds for weeks. Each day a little more colour is added, and with it, a little more joy. It feels personal, playful, and deeply divine at the same time.”

The Holi rituals themselves, especially Dhuleti and Dolotsav, are elegant spectacles where the idol is showered with colour during sacred darshans, amid devotional songs like rasiyas, rhythmic music and prayers. Here, devotees don’t just throw colours at each other; they receive them as blessings from the Lord himself.

Beyond the temple walls, the entire town resonates with spirited gatherings, folk performances, and traditional feasts featuring festive favourites like thandai and gujiya. Yet even in the lively street celebrations, where the air becomes a dance of colours, reverence for Krishna’s divine play remains at the core.

What sets Nathdwara’s Holi apart from celebrations elsewhere- be it in bustling cities or the playful Holi of Braj regions- is its beautiful harmony of devotion with festivity. Here, colour isn’t just playful chaos, it’s a living, breathing expression of love for the divine, woven into every smile, song and sprinkle of gulal.

The Role of Total Expense Ratio in Mutual Fund Performance

0

Investing in mutual funds has become important for building long-term wealth, yet many investors often overlook one critical factor that directly affects their returns: the cost of investing. Among these costs, the Total Expense Ratio (TER) plays a pivotal role.

Understanding TER allows investors to gauge how much of their money is being consumed by fund management, operational expenses, and other administrative charges. This knowledge is essential, as even a seemingly small difference in Total Expense Ratio can compound into significant variations in wealth accumulation over time.

This blog will guide investors through what the Total Expense Ratio is, its components, and how it influences mutual fund performance.

What is the Total Expense Ratio?

Total Expense Ratio, commonly abbreviated as TER, represents the percentage of a fund’s assets that are used to cover all operating expenses over a year. Essentially, it quantifies the cost of managing a mutual fund, deducted directly from the fund’s returns before they reach investors.

The Total Expense Ratio encompasses several key costs:

  • Fund Management Fees: Fees paid to the fund manager for managing investments.
  • Administrative Costs: Expenses related to investor communications, record-keeping, and compliance.
  • Operational Costs: Costs for running the fund infrastructure, including custodian fees, auditor charges, and regulatory expenses.

By understanding these components, investors can see precisely where their money is going and how it affects overall returns.

How TER Affects Mutual Fund Performance

The Total Expense Ratio has a direct and measurable impact on mutual fund performance. Higher TERs reduce the net returns that investors ultimately receive, while lower TERs leave more of the fund’s gains in the hands of investors.

For instance, consider two equity funds, Fund A with a TER of 2% and Fund B with a TER of 1%. If both funds generate a gross return of 10% over a year, Fund A’s net return would be approximately 8%. In contrast, Fund B would offer 9%. It is a noticeable difference, particularly when compounded over multiple years.

The compounding effect is crucial: even a 1% difference in TER can significantly alter the corpus over a 10- to 20-year horizon. Therefore, understanding and monitoring TER is essential for investors seeking long-term wealth accumulation.

TER in Mutual Fund: Key Considerations for Investors

When assessing TER in mutual fund investments, there are several important factors to consider:

  • Comparing TER Across Similar Funds

Always benchmark a fund’s TER against similar funds in the same category. A TER higher than average may not justify the additional cost unless the fund consistently outperforms peers.

  • Balancing TER with Fund Performance and Risk

A low TER does not automatically guarantee better performance. Investors must evaluate it alongside the fund’s historical returns, volatility, and risk profile.

  • Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

Some funds may charge additional costs such as exit loads, transaction fees, or performance-based fees. While not included in TER, these can impact overall returns.

By carefully weighing these considerations, investors can make cost-efficient decisions without compromising their investment objectives.

How to Minimise Costs While Maximising Returns

Investors can employ several practical strategies to optimise returns relative to TER:

  • Choosing Funds with Reasonable TER: Focus on funds whose TER aligns with their category average and justifies the potential returns.
  • Considering Passively Managed Funds: Index funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) often have lower TER due to minimal active management, offering cost-efficient exposure to markets.
  • Evaluating Fund Performance Relative to TER: Look beyond TER alone. Assess whether higher-cost funds deliver returns that compensate for the expense over the long term.

Adopting these approaches ensures that investors retain more of their investment gains while still accessing professional fund management.

Common Myths About Total Expense Ratio

Several misconceptions about Total Expense Ratio can mislead investors:

  1. Higher TER Means Better Performance: While some high-cost funds outperform peers, TER alone does not guarantee superior returns.
  2. TER is Negligible in Short-term Investments: Even in short-term horizons, high TER can erode net returns and should not be ignored.
  3. All Expenses are Reflected in TER: Certain costs, like exit loads, are excluded, and investors must consider them separately.
  4. TER Remains Constant Over Time: TER can fluctuate depending on fund size, operational changes, or regulatory adjustments.
  5. Low TER is Always Better: Extremely low TER may indicate limited active management, which may not suit all investment objectives.

Understanding these myths helps investors make more informed, cost-conscious decisions.

Making Informed Decisions for Financial Security

The Total Expense Ratio is a fundamental determinant of mutual fund performance, directly influencing the returns that investors ultimately receive. By understanding what TER entails, its components, and how it interacts with compounding over time, investors can make strategic choices that effectively balance costs and potential returns.

Monitoring TER consistently supports long-term wealth growth, ensuring that management and operational expenses do not unnecessarily erode investment gains. Evaluating TER alongside fund type, historical returns, and associated risks helps identify funds that provide genuine value for money.

For investors seeking well-researched and carefully managed options, online investment platforms like Jio BlackRock offer insights into selecting funds with competitive TERs. Making informed choices today can significantly enhance financial security and wealth accumulation in the future.

Thunder Over the Thar: Indian Air Force Unveils Vayu Shakti 2026 at Jaisalmer

0

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is showcasing its air-power prowess on Friday with the launch of Vayu Shakti 2026, a spectacular firepower demonstration and full-spectrum combat exercise at the Pokhran Field Firing Range near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, marking one of the largest and most technically advanced displays of aerial capability in the country’s history.

As the event begins today, on February 27, 2026, the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, is in Jaisalmer on a two-day official visit. She started the day with a historic sortie aboard the indigenously designed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand, accompanied by Air Chief Marshal Amarpreet Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, in a two-helicopter formation, demonstrating confidence in India’s home-grown defence technology.

Senior dignitaries, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and the Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, will be present in evening, alongside senior military commanders and invited defence representatives in evening during Vayu Shakti 2026.

Vayu Shakti- literally “power of the air”, is not an ordinary air show but a comprehensive firepower demonstration exercise, designed to test and validate the IAF’s tactical and strategic capabilities. It will highlight precision strike operations, integrated battle-space control, network-centric warfare, and multi-domain synergy involving air, land and electronic assets.

The aerial line-up includes frontline fighter aircraft such as the Dassault Rafale, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Mirage 2000, MiG-29 and SEPECAT Jaguar, alongside the BAE Hawk for coordinated strike packages. Transport and strategic lift capabilities are represented by the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Super Hercules and Airbus C-295. Helicopter assets include the indigenous HAL Prachand, HAL Dhruv, Mi-17 V5, AH-64E Apache and CH-47F Chinook.

Across the day and into night, pilots and crews will demonstrate day-dusk-night operations, precision strikes on simulated targets (runways, bunkers, radar sites), rapid deployment of Garud commandos, and synchronized air and ground missions that exemplify the IAF’s doctrine of Achook, Abhedya aur Sateek (Unerring, Immutable, Precise).

Vayu Shakti 2026 not only underscores India’s combat readiness but also celebrates indigenous platforms and the nation’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence. The Thar Desert sky today is not just a demonstration zone, but a testament to India’s growing aerial might and strategic deterrence capability.

Baba Khatu Shyam Rath Yatra Today Carries a 350 Year Old Tradition. Know Its Significance, History and Rituals

0

Under the soft hues of spring and the spiritual fervour of Falguni Ekadashi, the sacred town of Khatu prepares for one of its most cherished traditions — the grand Rath Yatra of Khatu Shyam.

For over 350 years, this centuries-old procession has carried Baba Shyam through the town amid chants, colours, music and unshakable devotion. This year, the spectacle promises to be even more resplendent, as the deity will ride in a magnificent chariot crafted from 125 kilograms of silver — a gleaming symbol of faith and gratitude offered by devotees.

A Living 350-Year-Old Tradition

Every year on Ekadashi during the Falgun month, Baba Shyam steps out of the temple sanctum to bless devotees across the town. The Rath Yatra, which will begin at 11:15 am from the temple premises, transforms the streets into a river of faith.

Devotees shower gulal into the air, dance to the rhythmic beats of the Chang, and sing bhajans as the chariot slowly advances. Chocolates and fruits are distributed from the Rath — a gesture lovingly described by locals as “Baba’s treasure being looted.” The enthusiasm to receive prasad and to pull the sacred chariot often reaches emotional heights, reflecting the deep personal bond devotees share with Lakhdatar.

Manvendra Singh Chauhan, Minister of the Shri Shyam Temple Committee, has appealed to devotees to maintain discipline and avoid pushing or jostling during the procession so that the spiritual atmosphere remains peaceful and safe for all.

Temple Timings Adjusted Due to Lunar Eclipse

This year’s celebrations come with important schedule changes. Due to a lunar eclipse on March 3, darshan at the temple will remain closed for the entire day.

Darshan will close again at 10 pm on March 4 in preparation for Baba’s Tilak ceremony and special Seva-Puja on March 5. Following the rituals, darshan will resume at 5 pm on March 5. The Tilak ceremony is considered one of the most sacred observances of the fair period.

A Chariot Worth Rs 1.5 Crore

Adding to the grandeur is the newly constructed chariot built last year in Nokha (Bikaner) at an estimated cost of ₹1.5 crore. Crafted over more than a month by eight artisans working daily, the grand Rath stands as a masterpiece of devotion and craftsmanship.

The identity of the donor who dedicated this opulent chariot to Baba Shyam has been kept confidential. Interestingly, to prevent the need for physically pushing the chariot amid massive crowds, it has been mounted on a jeep base for smooth movement through the packed streets.

Security on High Alert

With lakhs of devotees expected, authorities have made elaborate security arrangements. Multiple contingents of the Rajasthan Police will be deployed, supported by a Quick Response Team (QRT). The security personnel will closely monitor the procession to prevent overcrowding near the chariot and ensure a smooth and secure Rath Yatra.

Faith, Fervour and Festivity

The Rath Yatra is not merely a procession — it is a moving expression of collective devotion passed down through generations. From silver craftsmanship and sacred rituals to dancing devotees bathed in gulal, Falguni Ekadashi in Khatu is where faith takes to the streets.

As the silver chariot rolls forward and chants of “Shyam Baba ki Jai” echo through the town, history and devotion once again come alive in Rajasthan’s spiritual heartland

Cristiano Ronaldo Enters Club Ownership with 25% Stake in UD Almería

Football Legend Takes Strategic Step into Spanish Football Management

Cristiano Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner and current Al-Nassr forward, has taken a major step toward life beyond the pitch by acquiring a 25% stake in Spanish second-division club UD Almería. The deal, announced on February 26, 2026, was completed through Ronaldo’s investment arm, CR7 Sports Investments, a subsidiary of CR7 SA.

Saudi-Led Ownership Group Welcomes Ronaldo’s Investment

The investment joins the existing ownership consortium led by Saudi businessman Mohammed Al-Khereiji and the SMC Group, which assumed full control of the club in May 2025 following a transition from previous owner Turki Al-Sheikh. Financial terms of Ronaldo’s acquisition have not been disclosed, but it is described as a long-term strategic move to support the club’s growth.

Almería’s Strong Position in Segunda División

UD Almería, based in southern Spain and playing at the 17,400-capacity Power Horse Stadium, currently sit third in LaLiga2 (Segunda División). This position positions them strongly for the promotion play-offs to return to La Liga after relegation at the end of the 2023-24 season. The club has a history of top-flight spells since their first promotion in 2007, and under recent Saudi ownership, it has built connections with Saudi Pro League teams, including a pre-season friendly against Al-Nassr in August (which Almería won 3-2, despite two goals from Ronaldo).

Ronaldo’s Deep Connection to Spanish Football

Ronaldo, who turns 41 and spent nine highly successful years at Real Madrid (2009-2018) — where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 450 goals and won four Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles – expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Ronaldo’s Vision for Life After Playing

“It has been a long-held ambition of mine to contribute to football beyond just on the pitch,” Ronaldo said in a statement. “UD Almería is a Spanish club with strong foundations and clear potential for growth. I look forward to working alongside the leadership team to support the next phase of the club’s growth.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Enters Club Ownership with 25% Stake in UD Almería

Club President Praises Ronaldo’s Expertise

Club president Mohammed Al-Kher Eiji welcomed the investment, praising Ronaldo’s deep knowledge of Spanish football and his status as one of the game’s greatest players. “We are very pleased that Cristiano has chosen our club to invest in,” Al-Khereiji stated. “He knows the Spanish leagues very well and understands the potential of what we are building here both in terms of the team and the academy.”

Ronaldo’s Billion-Dollar Empire Continues to Grow

This move aligns with Ronaldo’s broader business empire, which includes ventures in water, underwear, footwear, fragrances, and partnerships with brands like Nike. Recognized as football’s first billionaire by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index in October 2025, he earns over £175 million ($240 million) annually from Al-Nassr, where he recently extended his contract.

Almería’s Recent Success in Player Trading

Almería has also gained a reputation for profitable player sales in recent years, including Colombian forward Luis Suárez to Sporting CP for €22 million and full-back Marc Pubill to Atlético Madrid for €16 million.

A New Chapter: From Player to Co-Owner

As Ronaldo, who has hinted at retiring in the near future, transitions toward post-playing roles, this stake in Almería marks his first foray into club ownership and signals his intent to remain influential in football’s future.

100 Million Strong: Modi Becomes the Most Followed World Leader on Instagram

0

In a milestone moment for digital politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially become the most followed world leader on Instagram, crossing the remarkable 100 million followers mark. With this feat, Modi has not only dominated the electoral map in the real world but also firmly established himself as the most influential political figure on social media.

Modi joined Instagram in 2014, shortly after assuming office as Prime Minister. Over the years, his account has grown into a powerful communication tool, now featuring thousands of posts that document everything from high-level diplomatic meetings and global summits to cultural celebrations, festival greetings, and candid behind-the-scenes moments. His feed blends governance with storytelling- crisp visuals, short impactful captions, and emotionally resonant imagery that connects with India’s youth-heavy digital population.

The USP of his Instagram presence lies in its accessibility and consistency. Whether it is a photograph from a G20 summit, yoga sessions on International Yoga Day, or moments with schoolchildren and sportspersons, the content humanises leadership while reinforcing authority. His posts frequently garner millions of likes and interactions within hours, reflecting both strong engagement and a well-strategised digital outreach model.

Globally, the gap between Modi and other leaders is striking.

US President Donald Trump has around 40+ million followers, while Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has approximately 15 million. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan trail further behind with follower counts in the low millions. No other serving head of government currently matches Modi’s three-digit-million milestone.
Within India, other prominent political leaders on Instagram include Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with over 16 million followers, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with around 12–13 million followers- impressive numbers, yet significantly behind the Prime Minister’s digital dominance.

As politics increasingly shifts to reels, stories, and scrolls, Modi’s Instagram rise reflects a broader transformation in global leadership branding. In an era where perception travels at the speed of a swipe, India’s Prime Minister has proven that his popularity extends far beyond rallies and ballots- it now thrives in algorithms and timelines across the world.
