Man Spends 93 Days Under Atlantic Sea, Becomes ‘10 Years Younger’

0

Retired naval officer Joseph Dituri embarked on a remarkable journey, spending over three months underwater as part of a groundbreaking study. Scientists sought to explore the effects of living in a pressurized underwater environment on the human body, and the results were astonishing. Upon emerging from his compact pod after 93 days in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, Dituri appeared to have turned “10 years younger.”

Remarkable Changes Observed

Medical assessments conducted after Dituri’s underwater sojourn revealed several significant changes in his physiology:

  1. Telomere Lengthening: Telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that usually shorten with age, were found to have increased by 20 percent. This lengthening is associated with cellular rejuvenation and longevity.
  2. Increased Stem Cell Count: Dituri’s stem cell count had risen, indicating enhanced regenerative capabilities and overall health improvements.
  3. Improved Sleep Quality: Dituri experienced a notable enhancement in the quality of his sleep, a vital factor for overall health and well-being.
  4. Lower Cholesterol Levels: His cholesterol levels dropped by an impressive 72 points, reducing his risk for cardiovascular diseases.
  5. Reduced Inflammatory Markers: Inflammatory markers in Dituri’s body were halved, signifying reduced inflammation and better immune function.

These extraordinary changes are attributed to the hyperbaric conditions underwater, which are known to exert numerous beneficial effects on the human body. The increased pressure is believed to stimulate various physiological responses that contribute to these health benefits.

Advocacy for Underwater Experiences

Dituri shared his insights on the potential benefits of such underwater experiences for the general public. He emphasized the need for isolated environments where people can detach from their daily stressors and harness the benefits of hyperbaric medicine. “You need one of these places that is cut off from outside activity. Send people down here for a two-week vacation, where they get their feet scrubbed, relax, and can experience the benefit of hyperbaric medicine,” Dituri told the Daily Mirror, a British tabloid.

He also noted significant improvements in his metabolism during his underwater stay. Dituri maintained an exercise routine, working out for over an hour, five days a week, using only his exercise bands. This disciplined regimen contributed to his overall health transformation.

Breaking Records

In addition to the health benefits, Joseph Dituri achieved a monumental feat by breaking the world record for underwater habitation. The previous record stood at 73 days, but Dituri extended this to an impressive 93 days, setting a new benchmark in the process.

Summing Up

Joseph Dituri’s 93-day underwater adventure not only provided valuable insights into the effects of pressurized environments on the human body but also demonstrated the potential for significant health benefits. His experience highlights the possibilities of hyperbaric medicine and the rejuvenating effects of underwater living. Dituri’s journey serves as a testament to human endurance and the untapped potential of unconventional health treatments.

EU, Smile Foundation Unveil SIFFCY 11th Edition at Cannes

0

The 11th edition of the Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY) was officially unveiled at the ongoing 77th Cannes Film Festival in the presence of dignitaries, industry leaders, filmmakers, cinema and media personalities from across the globe.

Smile Foundation has been organising SIFFCY in partnership with the European Union. The annual unique film festival for children is organised across 100 locations of India in a hybrid mode, which makes SIFFCY the largest film festival for children and youth in India.

The active participation of the European Union in SIFFCY is aimed at facilitating cultural exchange between the citizens of India and the European Union countries, due to which a sense of understanding, respect and global brotherhood will be strengthened. The sense of belonging that arises between people through the exchange of culture, art and ideas is beneficial for children and youth, who will shape the future course of humanity.

SIFFCY is an initiative of Smile Foundation to entertain, engage, educate and empower young minds. Smile Foundation believes that meaningful work of art, especially good cinema, not only entertains but also leaves an indelible impression on the young minds. As a result, children and youth catalyse a positive change thanks to their way of thinking and their sense of duty towards the society. Good cinema is a powerful medium to depict reality and inculcate values. A meaningful film becomes an interesting and engaging tool to encourage discussion among the youth about important personal, social, moral and global issues too.

The 11th edition of SIFFCY, scheduled for later this year, aims at bringing 150 curated films from 50 countries for the young Indian audience. Path-breaking films, filmmakers and creative talents from across the globe are awarded too under various categories during SIFFCY.

Unbridled access to a plethora of content online can have adverse impact on young minds, which is a universal phenomenon. Such exposure can result in behavioural and emotional problems, safety concern, reduced quality of sleep, and even weakened social skills. Instances of loneliness, sense of insecurity, violence and aggression have become the common traits of a teenager too. Left unattended, these can hamper them even when they grow up. One of the primary mission behind SIFFCY has been to make good content and creative work available to children, which in turn can help them build their emotional intelligence, empathy, opinion-making ability, creative cultivation of mind and develop an overall positive outlook towards life ahead.

Smile Foundation has been representing good cinema for children and youth at Cannes, especially for the young audience, for 15 years now. Incidentally, ‘I am Kalam’, a film produced by Santanu Mishra, Co-founder of Smile Foundation, made waves at the Cannes Festival in the past too. I am Kalam heralded making of films especially for the young Indian audience of the 21st century.

Santanu Mishra, SIFFCY Chairman and Producer of the much-acclaimed film ‘I am Kalam’, states that childhood is the decisive age of human life – the lessons we learn, the habits we make as children, it stays with us forever. Therefore, it is important that we sensitise our youngsters with a positive value system from the very beginning which will help them become kind and responsible citizens.

During the 77th Cannes Film Fest this year, Smile Foundation represented the cause of good cinema at the Bharat Pavilion. Hosted each year at the prestigious Festival by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India, Bharat’s participation is spearheaded by the National Film Development Corporation as the nodal agency and FICCI as the industry partner. Bharat Pavilion marks India’s continued commitment to showcasing its rich cinematic heritage and fostering international collaborations with the global film fraternity.

The Bharat Pavilion at Cannes serves as a hub for networking, collaboration, promotion of Indian Cinema on the global stage.

As the nation with the largest young population with a thriving socio-economic milieu, India has been earning expectation and prominence due to its philosophical contributions, thoughts, and ideas.

The Bharat Pavilion serves as a dynamic platform, providing a gateway to the diverse landscape of Indian films, talent, and industry opportunities and is set to host a series of scintillating panel discussions and networking sessions during the course of the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

A panel discussion titled “Children’s Films and Festivals: A global perspective” was moderated by SIFFCY director, Jitendra Mishra, wherein stalwarts of the domain from across Europe shared the stage. Another session on Indian Film Festivals was also held at the Bharat Pavilion with the panel represented by the SIFFCY Director.

Gut Microbiota Diets Boost Effectiveness of Anti-Diabetic Medications, Study Finds

0

Bangalore, Karnataka, India

  • The study included Indians in the age range of 42-65 years with hyperglycaemia and hyperlipidaemia
  • Study subjects were divided into two groups: one received the BugSpeaks-based personalized diet and the other a regular diet for 3 months.
  • On day 90, improvements were seen in the BugSpeaks-based personalized diet group across various parameters including HbA1c, CRP, and blood pressure.
  • The study demonstrates that gut microbiota-directed diet plans can supplement the anti-diabetic medication to enhance the overall condition of people with diabetes.

A first-of-its-kind clinical trial in India shows remarkable results for people with diabetes. The trial was conducted using BugSpeaks, a flagship technology of Leucine Rich Bio, India’s first microbiome-based company. BugSpeaks is a gut microbiome profiling test that provides nutritional recommendations based on the individual’s gut microbiota profile. With India being called the diabetes capital of the world housing more than 101 million people with diabetes, the results of this study are groundbreaking for the prevention and management of diabetes.

The clinical trial included 30 Indian adults in the age group 42-65, both male and female, with hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and hyperlipidaemia (high cholesterol). Study subjects were divided into two groups: one received the BugSpeaks-based personalized diet and the other a regular diet for 3 months. The patients who were given a BugSpeaks-based personalized diet showed excellent results across various parameters when examined on day 90 of the study. Their average HbA1c levels were brought down from 8.30 to 6.67, systolic blood pressure was reduced by 14%, and CRP levels, a marker of inflammation, were decreased by 20%. The study has been uploaded onto a preprint server MedRxiv and is undergoing peer review in an International scientific journal.

Speaking on the promising results of the clinical trial, Dr Debojyoti Dhar, Co-founder & Director (Business Development and Innovation), Leucine Rich Bio, and the lead author of the study says, “In this study, we have highlighted the positive effect of gut microbiota based personalized nutrition on hyperglycaemia, hypertension, and inflammation markers. This “proof of concept” clinical trial shows that BugSpeaks based nutritional modulation of the gut microbiota can impact the health positively and can supplement medication for diseases like type 2 diabetes.”

He adds, “We plan to conduct more such trials in the coming months for other diseases for which we have anecdotal evidence. Gut microbiota modulation through nutrition can provide a new dimension in the precision or personalized healthcare paradigm and this study is a step towards that direction.”

The study also found that the number of beneficial microorganisms like Phascolarctobacterium succinatutens, Bifidobacterium angulatum, and Levilactobacillus brevis, increased two-fold and a similar decrease was observed in non-beneficial species like Alistipes finegoldii and Sutterella faecalis. Maintaining the balance of gut microbiota is important as an imbalance, also known as dysbiosis, can cause or aggravate different diseases including but not limited to digestive issues such as inflammatory bowel syndrome, mental health issues like anxiety and depression, and menstrual problems.

Dr. Dhar has previously published two research reviews in renowned peer reviewed scientific journals: one on the possible link between the gut microbiota and Covid19 (Virus Research Journal) and another one on the potential impact of nutritional modulation of the gut microbiota in dealing with mental health issues during COVID-19 (Frontiers of Neuroscience journal).

Saudi Arabia Hosts ‘Historic’ First Swimwear Fashion Show

0

In a groundbreaking move that underscores the sweeping social changes underway in Saudi Arabia, the nation hosted its first-ever swimwear fashion show. This landmark event featured designs by Moroccan designer Yasmina Qanzal and took place at the St Regis Red Sea Resort, as part of the inaugural Red Sea Fashion Week. This marks a significant cultural shift in a country where women were required to wear body-covering abayas less than a decade ago.

The show highlighted Qanzal’s collection, predominantly one-piece swimsuits in hues of red, beige, and blue. The designs, while modest compared to Western standards, were revolutionary for Saudi Arabia. Models showcased exposed shoulders and partially visible midriffs, a stark contrast to the traditional dress code.

Qanzal expressed the importance of the event, stating, “It’s true that this country is very conservative but we tried to show elegant swimsuits which represent the Arab world. When we came here, we understood that a swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia is a historic moment because it is the first time to have such an event. It was an honor to be involved.”

The fashion show is part of the broader Vision 2030 initiative spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Since becoming the heir apparent in 2017, Prince Mohammed has implemented a series of social reforms aimed at modernizing Saudi Arabia and softening its austere global image, historically shaped by Wahhabism, a strict form of Islam.

These reforms have included curbing the powers of the religious police, reintroducing cinemas, and organizing mixed-gender events, including music festivals. While these changes have opened up Saudi society, they have also been accompanied by a crackdown on dissent, including from conservative clerics who might oppose such liberalizing measures.

Attendees of the fashion show, including Syrian fashion influencer Shouq Mohammed and French influencer Raphael Simacourbe, highlighted the significance of the event. Mohammed noted, “It’s the first time to have a swimsuit fashion show in Saudi Arabia, but why not? Seriously, why not? It’s possible and we have it here.” Simacourbe added, “That’s very brave of them to do that today, so I am very happy to be part of it.”

The event is not only a cultural milestone but also reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing fashion and tourism sectors. According to a report by the Saudi Fashion Commission, the fashion industry contributed $12.5 billion, or 1.4 percent of the national GDP, in 2022, employing 230,000 people.

As Saudi Arabia continues to open up, events like the Red Sea Fashion Week demonstrate the country’s commitment to balancing its rich cultural heritage with modern global trends. This swimwear fashion show is a testament to the transformative vision of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marking a new chapter in Saudi Arabia’s evolving identity.

India and Russia to Launch Talks on Visa-Free Agreement for Tourist Exchanges

0

India and Russia are poised to embark on a significant dialogue aimed at facilitating visa-free tourist exchanges, a move that could substantially enhance tourism flows between the two nations. These discussions are scheduled to commence in June, with the potential to mark a milestone in the long-standing relationship between India and Russia.

The upcoming negotiations were revealed by Russia’s Director of the Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects at the Ministry of Economic Development, Nikita Kondratyev, during the Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum 2024 in Kazan, Russia. Kondratyev highlighted the advanced stage of talks on group visa-free trips, expressing optimism about the potential agreement.

“We are in the final stages of internal coordination with the Indian delegation and are set to discuss a draft agreement soon,” Kondratyev stated, emphasizing the positive outlook for the discussions. “I anticipate that the initial consultations will take place in June to deliberate on the draft agreement, with the goal of signing it by the end of the year.”

This initiative is part of Russia’s broader strategy to enhance international tourism and cultural exchanges. The Ministry of Economic Development had previously announced plans to implement visa-free exchanges with India by the end of 2024, underscoring India’s importance in Russia’s tourism and economic strategies. Similar visa-free initiatives have already been launched with China and Iran as of August 1, 2023, facilitating group travel and fostering stronger ties with these nations.

The prospective agreement with India is expected to unlock new opportunities for travelers, deepen cultural interactions, and strengthen economic relations between the historically collaborative nations. If successful, the visa-free regime could lead to a significant increase in tourism, benefiting both countries’ economies and further solidifying their bilateral ties.

As the world increasingly prioritizes international cooperation and cultural exchange, the potential visa-free agreement between India and Russia represents a forward-thinking step towards fostering closer relationships and mutual understanding. The successful implementation of this initiative could serve as a model for other countries looking to enhance their own international tourism strategies through similar agreements.
