This tradition started from 1966. In 1965, a group gathered internationally in the US state of Hawaii.  It was proposed there that every year, a day should be kept when people can express their gratitude for the good deeds of each other, they can say thanks to their loved ones.  For this, the day of 21st September was chosen.
