India will celebrate National Voters’ Day on Saturday, January 25, 2025, marking a significant milestone—the 75th anniversary of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which was established in 1950. This year’s celebration holds special significance as it underscores seven and a half decades of strengthening democracy and empowering voters in the country.
The Election Commission of India has announced that the event will be held in New Delhi, with President Droupadi Murmu as the chief guest. The occasion will also see the presence of Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
Global Participation and Theme for 2025
The celebrations will also include participation from heads and representatives of election management bodies worldwide, following a two-day international conference hosted by the ECI on January 23 and 24. This year’s theme, “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure,” emphasizes the significance of voter participation and reinforces the commitment to democratic values.
India’s Growing Electoral Landscape
According to the ECI, India’s electoral database has grown to a staggering 99.1 crore registered voters, inching closer to the historic 100-crore mark. Out of this, 21.7 crore young voters aged between 18 and 29 years now form a vital part of the electorate.
The gender ratio in the electoral rolls has also seen an improvement, with 954 women for every 1,000 men in 2025, compared to 948 in 2024. This reflects a positive trend toward gender inclusivity in Indian elections.
Recognizing Excellence in Electoral Practices
One of the highlights of the event will be the presentation of the “Best Electoral Practices Awards” by President Murmu. These awards honor state and district officials who have demonstrated exemplary efforts in ensuring free, fair, and smooth elections.
Exclusive Preview of the Docu-Drama Series India Decides
Adding to the grandeur, the ECI will unveil a short clip from the highly anticipated docu-drama series, India Decides, produced by Warner Bros Discovery. This series chronicles the journey of India’s electoral process and its pivotal role in shaping the world’s largest democracy.
A Celebration of Democracy
National Voters’ Day, which precedes Republic Day, serves as a reminder of the fundamental right and responsibility of every citizen to participate in the democratic process. With 75 years of the Election Commission’s legacy being celebrated, this year’s event promises to inspire both young and seasoned voters to exercise their right to vote, ensuring the continued strength and vibrancy of India’s democracy.
