Chitrangada, a musical dance drama depicting the incredible power of a woman was staged on August 4 at Maharana Pratap Auditorium in Jaipur which left the Jaipur audience in awe of its narration.
The mesmerising music, the dance steps of stage players and the narration of the story was way beyond description.
Inspired by Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s 1892 booklet ‘Chitrangada’, this dance and drama adaptation is being presented for the first time across India and Jaipur. The play stars Suhasi Dhami, Sandip Soparkar, Moumita Pal in the lead roles and is directed and choreographed by Madhumita Chakraborty. On the 163rd birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, this is a true tribute to him, a visionary who saw the power of women a century ago, a power that has faded in the last few decades.
This musical dance drama honours Chitrangada, who embodies both the beauty of a lover and the valour of a warrior. It is the essence of beauty, purity and strength in a mesmerising play, with a mesmerising blend of folk and classical music.
The play is based on the untold story of Chitrangada, princess of the kingdom of Manipur; one of the wives of Arjuna. She was a queen, a warrior, a lover, a mother and above all a courageous princess who challenged stereotypes and ruled her kingdom with grace and became an inspiration for generations to come.
