India Surpasses the US to Become the World’s Second-Largest 5G Mobile Market, Apple Takes the Lead

In a significant shift within the global mobile market, India has overtaken the United States to become the world’s second-largest 5G handset market, trailing only behind China. This milestone reflects a broader trend of rapid growth in 5G adoption, driven by a combination of increasing handset availability and expanding network infrastructure.

According to a recent report by Counterpoint Research, global shipments of 5G handsets grew by 20% year-on-year in the first half of 2024. This surge in 5G handset adoption has been particularly notable in emerging markets, where affordable options have become more widely available.

Apple Dominates 5G Handset Shipments

Apple continues to lead the global 5G handset market, capturing over 25% of the share. The company’s success has been propelled by robust shipments of its iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 series. Apple’s dominance is underscored by its strong performance in the top 10 list of 5G models for the first half of 2024, with the iPhone securing the top four spots.

India’s Emergence as a 5G Powerhouse

India’s ascent to the second-largest 5G handset market highlights a significant shift in global market dynamics. Senior analyst Prachir Singh attributed this rise to the strong performance of brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung, particularly in the budget segment. The availability of affordable 5G handsets has spurred substantial growth in the Indian market, surpassing the US for the first time.

Samsung’s Strong Position

Following Apple, Samsung has also made a notable impact, securing more than 21% of the global 5G handset market share. The company’s Galaxy A and S24 series have been key drivers of its success. Samsung, like Apple, has dominated the top-10 list of 5G models, with both brands holding five spots each.

Global and Regional Growth Trends

The expansion of 5G handsets is not limited to India and the US. Emerging markets around the world are experiencing significant growth, driven by the increasing affordability of 5G devices. The Asia-Pacific region alone accounted for 63% of the global net additions in 5G handsets and held a 58% share of global 5G shipments. Both Europe and the Middle East and Africa (MEA) regions have also seen double-digit growth in 5G handset shipments.

Research Director Tarun Pathak notes that the trend towards greater 5G adoption is expected to continue as the market for 5G handsets becomes more democratized. The increased penetration of 5G in lower price segments, coupled with the ongoing expansion of 5G networks, is likely to drive further growth in this sector.

As the global 5G landscape evolves, India’s newfound position as a major player underscores the rapidly changing dynamics of the mobile market and the pivotal role of affordable, high-quality 5G devices in driving worldwide adoption.
