Trains can traverse the bridge at a speed of up to 75 km/h, though the vertical lift section has a speed restriction of 50 km/h for safety reasons.

It cannot function when wind speeds exceed 58 km/h, a frequent occurrence from October to February. For decades, the old Pamban Bridge served as the sole railway link between the mainland and Rameshwaram, until a parallel road bridge was constructed in 1988.
