India’s ambitious Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS), planned for launch by 2035, marks a significant leap in the nation’s space exploration efforts. Spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the station will be India’s first independent space outpost and a testament to its growing capabilities in space technology.

Key Features of BAS:

  1. Five-Module Configuration: The station will comprise modules for a base, core docking, scientific research, a laboratory, and a common workspace. Each module, except the common working module, will have independent solar panels to ensure self-sufficiency in energy.
  2. Development Timeline: The first module, BAS-1, is set to launch by 2028. Initially uncrewed, it will test technologies such as life support systems and crew accommodations. The complete station will support long-term human missions in microgravity by 2035.
  3. Advanced Docking and Power Systems: ISRO plans to integrate the Bharatiya Docking System for autonomous spacecraft rendezvous and docking. The station will also use innovative fuel cell technology to generate power and produce clean water as a byproduct.
  4. Human-Centric Goals: BAS aims to support India’s human spaceflight missions under the expanded Gaganyaan programme, which includes eight missions by 2028. These missions will test critical systems like extravehicular activity suits and pave the way for extended human stays in space.

Scientific and Strategic Importance:

The station will serve as a hub for microgravity-based research, enabling advancements in materials science, biology, and technology. It also positions India strategically alongside global space powers with independent capabilities in long-duration human spaceflight.
