Veer Savarkar Jayanti is observed every year on May 28 to commemorate the birth day of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar who is known as a freedom fighter, political ideologist, poet, and social reformer. Born in 1883 in Maharashtra, Savarkar was instrumental in bringing India to its feet against British colonialism. Being among the first leaders to vocally demand absolute independence from British rule years before the mainstream movement started gaining strength, Savarkar’s work went beyond politics; he was a courageous social reformer who was against untouchability and discrimination based on caste.
He languished in the notorious Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) in Andaman for years for his revolutionary work. An ardent nationalist, Savarkar also originated the term “Hindutva,” advocating cultural unity and pride.
Veer Savarkar Jayanti is celebrated with tributes, speeches, and remembrance activities in India, particularly by political and cultural parties that maintain his tradition of bravery, reform, and nationalism.
